Sony NGP price to match 3DS, expects Codemasters

UK publishing and development giant Codemasters has told CVG that it expects the price of Sony NGP (PSP2) to be in line with Nintendo's 3DS.

Although Nintendo has refused to put a Suggested Retail Price on 3DS in Europe, stores have been pricing the device at around £230

And $349 with (remember there are two models, priced differently for 3G and without). If they price it exactly the same as their competition they create a perceived value similarity with the 3DS, when it is clearly a higher spec/ tech item. They can't price it so high that they price themselves out of the market either (as they did with the PS3, initially).

That's my take anyway. Grabbing one day one regardless of the price - it's a sick piece of kit.

Great for America but Sony has always been a little lax with it's European prices.

I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to price it the same in the US, but have it priced at more in Europe.

Although Codemasters is an English company so who knows.

I'm expecting it to be about £300 at launch so I've started saving already. Tbh I would love it to be cheaper but I think it'll be worth it, start saving folks.

I expect the price to be in-line with the 3DS. The PS3 was expensive because of new technology, there isn't anything new in this device. Touch screens/pads, cameras, it's all been done before in MANY MANY gadgets out there. I'd say $250 for the model without 3G and probably $300 for the high end model. If the PSP2 is the same price as the 3DS I could see it fairing much better than the PSP did against the DS. The DS only really got a foothold over the PSP because it was launched at $100 cheaper. I'm sure the DS would have still beat the PSP if they were evenly priced, however I think it would have been closer.

I think what makes nintendo so strong among casuals is not hardware, its their franchises. lots of people just wanna play mario, donkey kong etc. over and over again.

but sony delivers for the hardcore gamers...everybody wins!

I hate to break it to you but games arent hardcore, the people that play them are. Sony doesnt decide what "hardcore" players play, the "hardcore" players do.

Some play donkey kong, some play madden, some play Final Fantasy, same play tetris (like me) and I am not a casual player.

If sony prices the ngp at 250 without 3g and 300 with 3g, they will sell boatloads. Yes they'll take a loss but it'll be so much better for them in the long run. The NGP will flood the market and 3rd party support will spread like a forest fire. I can't wait for this thing to come out.

Sony have a habit of selling hardware at a loss and profits later with software. For example, the PS3 Phat. That's why I don't have beef with Sony, unlike freaking Microsoft and idiots who supports them. Have a problem with that statement? Go cry to momma to pay for your P2P more. I hope you like your proprietary plastic case for your HDD too.

I hope they will do this again for the NGP. Still don't get why people cry about the initial PS3 price when obviously Sony is giving it to you for a loss. Piracy is a HUGE problem if they go by this method though. That's why I buy legitimate copies for games on PC and PS3. Steam is rather convenient. A similar service should be on the NGP to prevent assholes hackers from ruining gaming for everyone. They have android on NGP for their homebrews excuses.

Codemasters is full of it, look at how they lied and fooled people with Dragon Rising. This awesome piece of hardware that eats 3DS in specs cannot in anyway match it in price, it's impossible.

$299.99 without 3G will be the min. and $349.99 with.

I think we are over looking some things here. When the first x-box was being talked about, it had specs that were quite different then what it was released with. Why? Because by the time it came around to make the system, the technology had already advanced past their original specs.

What does that mean? Instead of sticking with the original specs, they upgraded tot he new stuff because the new stuff cost the same as the original parts in the original spec list- which means they upgraded the power WITHOUT raising the price.

Now there are articles on the PSP2 that state quite frankly that they are not producing the device yet or have the factory stuff up and running to make it yet. And if this device is slated to be released around holiday season of 2011- look how far off that is from now. By the time they start manufactoring PSP2 the original tech should be outdated/cheaper- which would allow Sony to market it at a lower price for us. Yes it is nice to be out first, but it is nicer to get good hardware at a cheaper price due to it being slightly outdated when it ships.

I wouldn't have any problem paying anything up to $350 but I would be worried about how many other people will buy at that price. I want to have people to play online with. I think it will be more than $300 but it all depends on how much of the price they want to take a hit for. It probably cost them $400 to make.
