Interview – Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’s Matt Webster

VG247 writes: We got a chance this week to see Criterion’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in London this week, and were lucky enough to grab some face-time with senior producer, Matt Webster.

Matt talked about his “healthy paranoia” as regards the competition, why story isn’t “necessary” to the game, what Criterion’s working on next and more.

Get the full thing after the break

There’s also some new screens below. A new trailer is incoming as well, so keep them peeled.

Hope that one feature from heat is in the game, the one where you can get pretty much every vehicle to 400+

Blaze929988d ago

Need to see more gameplay. Announcement trailer and release 2 months later is interesting but something is off...

TheColbertinator987d ago

That's a good point. EA might not even do a marketing rush on this one

Profchaos987d ago

I think they are spending a large amount of money getting celebrity endorsement for some reason that could be how they advertise it.

Hauntedasylum8987d ago

Yes barely two months between announcement trailer and release date is very rare. Still looks good though so I’m optimistic.

Retroman987d ago (Edited 987d ago )

Blaze.

What we have not seen yet is the Hidden Microtransactions .
don't think Payback will be "Only" loot boxes and pay to win game. have a feeling this will be Another Microtransactions, loot box game.

MrBaskerville985d ago

They ditched all that in Heat. Wouldn't be too worried.

Profchaos987d ago

Fallout managed that kind of release however given its EA expect to see large be amounts of copy and paste

MrBaskerville985d ago (Edited 985d ago )

Maybe they have confidence in the game, maybe it's a good nfs game for a change. A game without caveats. I choose to be hopeful.

By confidence i mean they know it's good and game will speak for itself.

Retroman984d ago (Edited 984d ago )

Let's hope the game speaks for itself. I'm dying to play NFS again, have not played NFS since The Run....what is Appealing for me is you can turn that Cartoony crap off. not all of it but smoke you can I hear .

MrBaskerville984d ago (Edited 984d ago )

@Retroman
They hit rockbottom with Payback and Heat was big step in the right direction. Not the greatest game ever, but the closest to a truly good game NFS have been in a while. So that bodes well for a Unbound. Just hope they don't drop the ball, as they've done so many times before.

I wasn't feeling the graphics or style here but I can see how many would like it. Just feel like it's aimed at a younger demo than me a fan from the 90s/ early 2000s who thinks the franchise peaked during the underground era

UltimateRacer987d ago

For me it peaked at Carbon, I’m not saying carbon was the best game from the early 2000s but I did like the story. Overall I thought NFS 2015 was a step in the right direction, Payback was a step backwards and then I enjoyed Heat but it was to easy. I like the look of Unbound, it gives me Underground Vibes but naturally I need to see gameplay to make a final judgment.

Retroman984d ago (Edited 984d ago )

@Profchaos
You are right NFS peaked from Highstakes to Hotpursuit 2, Underground, Mostwanted 2005. Started declining with Carbon . Last Ditch try The Run collapse after that.

Orchard987d ago

Not super convinced on the art style but I’ll wait and see a proper gameplay trailer before making my final decision.

They could’ve also just given us a remake of NFSU 🤷

hiawa23987d ago

I love all of the NFS games and I love the art direction of Unbound. Preordered.

Looking Back to Two of Need for Speed's Best Games - Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit

Paul writes - "EA know a good thing when they see it, and for multiple years November was Need for Speed month. In a break from the usual routine, I'm going to be looking back at two games here, released in 2005 and 2010 respectively. The earlier game is Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which has the distinction of being one of the very best in the franchise. The second game comes from 2010, and is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit; which I'll talk about just as the Remastered version of the game has hit the stores."

Hotpursuit 2 was good as well.

The-Matrix-has-you574d ago (Edited 574d ago )

I completely adore this game! In fact its probably my favorite racing game. I recently dusted off my xbox 360 to play Most Wanted 2005. Still a great game, though I do not remember there being such horrible performance. Like massive frame-pacing issues. screen tearing, latency. If any game ever truly needed to be remastered, it this one for sure!
