GameInformer: Metroid Other M Review

Metroid: Other M is the most disappointing Nintendo release in quite some time and a blemish that isn’t likely to be forgotten on an otherwise superb franchise.

what's with the uneven scores? Another reason not to trust reviews so easily. Play for yourself

himdeel5404d ago

...its the difference between fans and non-fans of the game. However you're right trust your own play through to decide or ask people you trust to give you their opinion.

Biggest5404d ago

That's the wrong way to look at it. Reviews aren't there to help you form opinions of how much you will or do enjoy a game. They're supposed to assist potential buyers in the decision to buy, rent, or pass on a game. If you spend money to try it for yourself, why even look at a review?

BeaArthur5404d ago

The uneven scores are probably a result of the somewhat new direction for the series. I mean less face facts this game is far more story driven than an Metroid we have ever seen. Before now we knew very little about who Samus was as a person and we naturally developed predisposed opinions, but now we are being told through the context of the game who Samus really is and that may be clashing with the opinions of what people perceived her to be. Thus turning some people off. Also I have heard the controls for switching to FPS mode are somewhat jarring.

Godmars2905404d ago

From what I've read so far it seems the game's taking a hit for Wiimote-only controls.

Highlife5404d ago

People on this site crack me up! When the scores are low everyone says reviewers suck and you should play the game for yourself to judge. When the reviews are good 9's and 10's everyone says AAA title day 1. Same damn thing all the time.

fatstarr5404d ago

Its like x gives it a 9
then y gives it a 3

-_- when a company takes one of their top 5 precious 1st party games and remixes it to try out new things to counter the it feels rehashed and redone bla bla bla. they get negative reviews. Basically the game is an 8 hands down the other reviews are just attacking things they dont like

Wait... what? 6.2...5?! These guys have to go THAT far into decimal places to gauge how good a game is?

Next we'll be seeing a game rated 3.141592653589793

despair5404d ago

A game rated Pi?

but yea its all subjective I like whole number review scores more than decimal, it leaves a little room for interpretation for readers like an 8 could be 8-8.9 its up to the reader to see how close it is to either end of the scale.

Stealth20k5404d ago

Eh and they gave paper mario bad scores too. They dont like nintendo. Everyone else has given the game high 8's basically but its no fun posting high scores

Trroy5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

The last Paper Mario wasn't as good as the previous ones though -- you can't deny that.

G4TV gave Other M a 2/5, and Destructoid gave it a 6.5/10, btw.

Stealth20k5404d ago

And ign, gamespot gave it a great score

Trroy5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

Yeah, I think the scoring is going to be highly dependant upon the reviewers tolerance for the gameplay change, and whether they can bear the storytelling.

The G4TV review was written by a female fan, and apparently the story is pretty sexist and stupid.. which is sad, because, as a prequel, storytelling is supposed to be a major factor in the experience... and Samus is the galaxy's toughest bounty hunter, not the wimp they portray her as in Other M.

I think reviewers who care less about the story are more likely to give it better scores.

rhood0225404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

@Stealth

So go with those scores if it makes you feel better.

But because some sites give a lower score that you don't agree with doesn't invalidate THEIR opinion of the game. Nor does it mean that they "dont like nintendo."

TooTall195404d ago

Metroid is also being advertised on IGN.

Mahr5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

"The last Paper Mario wasn't as good as the previous ones though"

It's not the *last* Paper Mario game that Game Informer did not like, given that they gave it a 9.5.

Thousand Year Door is the one they hated: "The art and combat are killed in their tracks by the game's downright shameful dialogue- 6.75"

"However, it also WILL NOT appeal to many people - I would safely say that more people will dislike it than like it. Why? Like we said in the review, it's a very kiddie game - it's target audience is clearly young gamers - I would say 10 and under. For that reason, we had to score it low."

fatstarr5404d ago

from what i can tell she was pretty whimpy b4 something happend that toughened her up o.o. you expected a Huey freeman eyebrow girl that was tough since birth?

redDevil875404d ago

6.25 .... are they serious? Thats the most random number for a review i've ever seen lol.

MasterBlaster5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

Game Informer usually does quarter-points.

Trroy5404d ago

They should have re-evaluated this one, and done a little more work to make it worthwhile.

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds880d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

deleted880d ago

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman69880d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees3880d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese880d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits879d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff2183880d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee1125d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

H91125d ago

I mean it was a killer

Terry_B1125d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM1344d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
