Why This Gamer Dad Can't Play Heavy Rain

Violence in video games is nothing new but where do we draw the line? One gamer draws that line when it comes to violence against children, or centered around it, and states that it's a subject that's best left out of gaming.

If you want to argue that violence against children should never be a topic in a video game, I hope that you never make the argument that games can be art. It is a morally fragile position.

I respect that certain topics can be triggers for negative or painful emotions. Torture scenes, immolation, and violent against women are a sure turn off for me. But either you respect that video games are capable of telling a story about an endangered child or you don't respect the medium's capacity for storytelling.

If Law and Order: SVU can have a weekly child molestation and murder storyline, Heavy Rain can and should tell a story about the lengths a man will go to save a child.

Yardie5015d ago

"...and violent against women are a sure turn off for me".
Are you telling me that you have never had sex with a hooker and killed her to regain your money?

D4RkNIKON5015d ago (Edited 5015d ago )

I can't play heavy rain because some complete douche bag on N4G (bungie i hate you) spoiled the game by posting everywhere who the killer is. I saw it before the moderators removed his comments and now I can't bring myself to play the game knowing the answer.

karl5015d ago

.. its sad but it was spoiled for me to and it totally ruined it

i still enjoyed many parts of the game but the ending felt empty knowing the answer..

when i read the spoiler i kept thinking that it was a joke and bought the game thinking during all the game "please dont be him"

well at least im proud for supporting quantic dreams

for their next game i will probably hibernate until release day

HumanStark5015d ago

I'm shamed you quoted my embarrassing typo :|

RockmanII75015d ago

Yea, I had the game spoiled for me to. I didn't remember it was Bungie though, I thought it was a account called ######## is the killer (I held down the # so that may or may not be the name). Advice - A month before a major game comes out stop going to news sites. If you need to stay updated listen to gaming podcasts.

DORMIN5015d ago

This is one of the dumbest articles i've read on N4G.

The hypocrisy of saying Heavy Rain is in a sense more violent and emotionally alarming than MW2's 'No Russian' mission where you slaughter innocents in an airport is just ignorant.

@D4rknikon:

Even though you had the game spoiled, its very much still worth experiencing the journey rather than the destination. I had it spoiled and its still my favorite game of the year so far because its one of the most emotional and intense games i've experienced.

Violence is okay against pixelated creatures, just so long as it's against adult males.
/s

dizzleK5015d ago (Edited 5015d ago )

correction:straight, white, adult males. remember the re5 "racism" claims?

straight, white males are the only acceptable target left on earth. didn't the p.c. police send you that memo?

rdgneoz35015d ago

What has this world come to when there is no freedom to choose who you want to kill?

On a side note, http://static.gamesradar.co...

Solidus187-SCMilk5015d ago

so I guess this guy wont play LIMBO either.

Grow some balls guy. If you think its disturbing, violence of any kind in games should be frowned upon by you.

I hate people who only complain about one tiny aspect of videogames, and completely Ignore the fact that most videogames involve ALOT of violence.

"Violence is ok, but not violence against children."
"Swear words ruin my murder simulator"
"im killing something besides white people"

Give it up, all forms of media are filled with violence. By now im more disturbed if a dog is murdered in stories then if a person is.

rdgneoz35015d ago

Don't forget any mention of or hinting at sex in a game ruining their murder simulation.

jeeves865015d ago

You got your vulgar words in my murder simulator :P

Solidus187-SCMilk5015d ago (Edited 5015d ago )

YES THEY DESERVE TO DIE, AND I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

tiamat55015d ago

That is the price of realistic subjects in games. Not everyone is going to like it. But then again it's better then the mindnumbing, juvenile, poorly scripted BS that people put in game. In real life an evil person wouldn't care what age you were.

kneon5015d ago

I have two kids and I loved heavy rain. I believe the fact that I have kids made the game that much better. I'm sure that I was more emotionally involved in the game than if I'd had no kids and because of that it was incredibly intense at times. Even something as simple as trying to get through the crowds to find Shaun was extremely intense. Every parent at some point has lost sight of a child in a crowd, even if only for a moment, and that scene brings it all back. I can understand how it would be too much for some people but for me it was fantastic.

iceman065013d ago

This dad should have played it. As much as he loves his kids, I bet when he finished with that those specific scenes he would have a deeper connection with the character and at least a thought of what it would be like to lose his own child like that. This is what David Cage was thinking about, saying as though those specific scenes were inspired by his own thoughts of what would happen if he lost his own children. This guy missed the boat on this one...seriously. My 17 y/o nephew was so engaged in this game (he usually plays only sports games) that he finished it in 3 sittings. He couldn't even put his emotions into words at the end. To touch anybody, especially a self-absorbed teenager, takes a hell of a game.

GuruStarr785015d ago

its a game, dude......bee-aye-eee-aye-itch !

TheFreak5015d ago

OMG he can`t play heavy rain, but have no problems with mw2 airport level hahaahaha WTF?

AlienFodder5015d ago

I know, right? I had the same reaction... O_O

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1258d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1258d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1258d ago (Edited 1258d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1415d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121415d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1415d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121415d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121415d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Z5011415d ago

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1415d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
