Since the official unavailing of Microsoft’s ‘Kinect’ and Sony’s ‘Playstation Move’ at this years E3 many gamers, game critics, and game journalists have been questioning the place of motion controls in a hardcore gaming market. Do motion controls have a place in ‘M’ rated hardcore games?
A group of surgeons made headlines after they managed to perform an endoscopic procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong by using PlayStation controllers. It involved the use of a PS5 DualSense controller as well as a PlayStation Move controller.
That's really cool. It's crazy something like that is possible with gaming controllers 1000's of miles away.
Air Conflicts: Secret Wars debuted in 2011, and later updated for modern consoles. However, it's the PlayStation 3 edition that stands out.
Joy Ride Turbo launched 10 years ago today. The first title was Xbox Kinect exclusive, yet this sequel failed to support the device at all.
You can not play a game like Gears of War with motion control, its not happening. The gameplay is far too complex, good players can already run circles around bad players with both of them using a controller. That's just one example of can't be done with motion control. A game has to be slow paced and lack gameplay variety for motion control to work. Maybe in the single player of Gears of War where the enemies sit still and so can you, but never online.
Complete 1:1 just wont work for games. You will always need gesture triggered move sets. Ask yourselves can you pull off one of Kratos' combos in 1:1?
I think with the right combination of analog, digital, 1:1 and gesture based controls we could very easily play hardcore games at the same level or higher than we are playing now. Just a few years ago we didn't think we could play FPS games without a mouse and keyboard. Now there are guys that swear by their analog controls. I played a hacked version of HL2 with my Wiimote, and I had a blast, I really think that Sony's Move controller is moving in the right direction, it might take some time to perfect but so far it's looking very good. I would love to play or at least have the option to play all future Hardcore FPS game with motion controls. If MS can figure out how to get it to work with their HC games I'd give it a try too but first they gotta get it working on their casual games before I'll get behind it.
