Blizzard's 'unannounced next-gen MMO' still in the works

News of an unannounced MMO being in the works at Blizzard hit the newsstands way back in 2007, but with barely anything heard about the game since, some were starting to lose hope that it would ever see the light of day.

However, according to job listings posted yesterday on Gamasutra, the game is still in the works, with the team looking for a new producer and two senior software engineers to work on the game.

Hopefully it will be unveiled at Blizzcon this year

Conloles5399d ago

Lol who am i kidding only the best exclusives are on PC

You Noob5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

What about Uncharted 1/2, Killzone 2/3, Metal Gear Solid 4, God Of War 3, Infamous 1/2, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII?

Reibooi5399d ago

Honestly I really don't care about this game. As time has gone on Blizzard has proved they know nothing about running a MMO. They keep smacking their hardcore players in the face by making them repeatedly get better and better get and never letting them feel as though they have accomplished something in the game. The community in WoW is utter trash on the level of something like Xbox Live which is reason enough to not play it.

And honestly if they are making World of Starcraft I'll pass because all it will be is a WoW with a Star craft skin and I would want to see more then that. Until we know what it is and it's out and proven not to be a failure I honestly don't care about it.

Montrealien5399d ago

Reibooi, hardcore gamers or what you concider the hardcore, I concider them OCD, is a small market. It is just not worth it to cater to only them. why so mad bro?

Panthers5399d ago

You seem to think that Blizzard always produces failures. I can not think of one. WoW has a very strong community and I have met some awesome people in the game. And of course players will keep getting better and better, that is how an MMO works. The game can never truly end, or it wouldnt be an MMO. I know everytime I actually complete a dungeon for the first time it is a huge accomplishment.

Reibooi5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

@Panthers

Did I ever once say that Blizzard makes nothing but failed games? No. I didn't so don't put words in my mouth. I am quite a big fan of both Diablo and Starcraft and am looking forward to Starcraft 2(despite it's over priced release strategy)

What I said is I disagree with how Blizzard runs WoW. In most MMO's players will strive to get a particular set of gear that makes them powerful and once they achieve that lofty goal they are considered top tier players and will not be gimped or out geared for awhile to come. However in WoW Blizzard screws those kinds of players by making them bust their asses getting this gear only to say "WAIT WE ADDED NEW BETTER STUFF DO IT AGAIN!!!!" It's retarded because it never gives anyone a sense of accomplishment in the game. Which is a large reason about why people play MMO's.

Compare that to a game like Final Fantasy XI where if you got the best gear you had the best gear for years and years to come and instead focused on other jobs to provide additional game play it as opposed to constantly doing the same raids over and over just to get gear that will be outdated a month later.

I know countless friends who quit WoW for this exact reason and moved onto either War Hammer online or Aion.

What I am saying is if the next game they make is a copy and paste of WoW with a different skin it's going to fail. Blizzard themselves have already said WoW is on the decline so making the same game again with new colors or whatnot isn't gonna work they need to do something new.

@Montrealien

I don't consider those kinds of players OCD I consider them dedicated. They would have to be to play the game so long and get to the end game. The fact that WoW has a end game means it's trying to appeal to hardcore players causal players would just mess around in the game and never really care about getting to the end game. There is a LARGE amount of people constantly doing end game raids and those players are screwed because they waste months and months getting the best gear in the game only to have something better added the week after they get the gear they just got and not have to do it all over again and that is not how most MMO's do it.

Also I'm not mad. I'm just stating my opinion on a game I really feel doesn't deserve the hype and best MMO ever comments it gets heaped upon it.

Montrealien5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

Oh wow, so you are saying that in FF11 you get the best gear, that is all you wear for years? sounds awesome! And Aion and Warhammer are what people are switching to? for what? Broken end game in warhammer and horrible guild based PvP and the worse profession grinds in history with Aion?

God forbid Blizzard found a way to make gear and end game progression actually a little interesting and accessible. Who would of thunk! Getting new gears and upgrades every few months actually works, and you think the correct way to to grind for years, and then get that one shoulder piece that will last you for years? imho, that is boring as hell. I played pretty much every major MMO of the last 20 years, WoW got it right, and that is why millions log on everyday. And yes, not concentrating on pleasing the little group of OCD players is one of the major reason WoW is so succesfull, is rightfully hyped and is one of the best MMOs ever made.

I am VERY dedicated to WoW, and I hate it when high horse ridding people like you label me as dumb and casual because I actually enjoy and respect what wow is.

And I hope they have the same approach with their new MMO.

Reibooi5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

@Montrealien

While I can't speak for Aion or War Hammer(I don't play those games just a few friends do and that's up to them to deal with those games issues)

I can tell you that your idea of how FFXI works is horribly wrong. You don't spend years getting a single piece and then use that piece forever. You will probably spend about a month or 2 FULLY gearing the character with gear you will continue to use for years to come and instead of getting slapped in the face and having to go and do it all over again you instead LEVEL ANOTHER JOB and do it with that job which keeps things FAR more interesting then doing the same thing over and over again on the same job like you are forced to in WoW. Oh and lets not forget you do this all on ONE character instead of having to make a new character every time you wanna play another class or job which that alone is retarded to me after playing FFXI.

WoW is not so popular because of how the game works. It's popular because of blind luck. When it came out it had the snow ball effect and when people wanted to play something they wanted to play with other people and since WoW had the most people most people chose that game. Groups of friends played it, and then their friends played it and then their friends and it was a endless cycle that gave the game a massive player base. It has nothing to do with game play or anything. Proof of that is games that tried to copy WoW. If the game just works then all those clones would have been smash hit's. Yet they weren't and the reason is because the game play doesn't "Just Work" It's a bad system that abuses the players.

And for the record I never talked down to you. Nor did I call you a casual player. But it's a known fact that WoW is the most casual MMO out there. And if you are wondering why people from WoW get such a bad stigma head over to you tube and watch the COUNTLESS video's of people freaking out because of something that happen in or to the game. You getting so bent out of shape because my opinion differs from yours is exactly why I hate the WoW community. It's nothing but 12 year olds or people(like yourself) who can't handle a bit of criticism.

Lord_Doggington5399d ago

for the love of god release this on consoles

Panthers5399d ago

exactly. some games do not belong on consoles, like MMORPGs and RTS games. Blizzard would never compromise the integrity of their games by forcing them onto a system they do not belong.

Lord_Doggington5399d ago

There's no reason why an MMO by Blizzard shouldn't be released on a console. If you feel that it shouldn't then you've obviously never played a Blizzard MMO.

alphakennybody5399d ago (Edited 5399d ago )

I hope it'll be a more serious/dark/gritty like Demon's soul'ish world and atmosphere.

@Blasian
Oh , I know what you mean man. I also want a world that reeks of atmosphere, WOW just felt bland and blander every time I logged on( i stopped playing for that reason). If demon's souls 2 were to become an MMO while retaining all that was good in DS1 I'd be happily pay the sub fee at any price.

blasian5399d ago

I could only dream of an MMO as challenging as Demons souls but we both know if it was that challenging then that MMO would get no subscribers whatsoever.

Dnied5399d ago

from activision/blizzard?

I'd like to hope too but I don't think it'll happen :(

I know it's been denied but I still think a starcraft mmo would be pretty sweet... something that could compete with other upcoming SCI FI mmos like warhammer 40k and star wars? dunno

Maybe they'll introduce a challenge in this mmo now that wow has turned into a kids game

Darkfiber5399d ago

They already said it was going to be a casual, most likely free-to-play game. Probably some facebook crap.

DeathMetal5399d ago

it's going to have next gen graphics and be a MMOFPS is what has been said.

Pandamobile5399d ago

MMOFPS? Color me interested.

Fireseed5399d ago

Let em take take their time cause I just started playing WoW so let me finish everything then they can reveal the next game. Sound good?

chak_5399d ago

I'm not interrested in blizzard anymore.

Wake me up in 2013 for diablo 3

Barbapapa5399d ago

don't want to sound generic, but please let it be world of starcraft!!!

Panthers5399d ago

Im pretty sure they said it would be a new IP and it would not be like WoW in terms of gameplay.

Good to hear. Past couple of years the show floor is getting smaller & smaller, with more space everywhere. Food truck trucks made their way on to the expo hall floor last year. Haven't seen that since 2012.

Garethvk15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

We stopped going to PAX West and let local team cover it. We could not justify airfare, rental car, food, hotel, etc for indies.

Was aware the iconic Starcaft IP was jumping to South Korea ....

jznrpg32d ago

Weird MS is letting go of a good IP. I don’t mind it but hopefully the best dev wins and I’m not sure who that is outbid those.

Sonyslave332d ago (Edited 32d ago )

What they are bidding for are exclusive rights to develop the IP. Microsoft/blizzard is essentially licensing it out to the highest bidder, not selling the IP.

B5R32d ago

I wonder if we'll see Starcraft Ghost come out of this. And if we do, I wonder if it'll be a free-to-play gacha game.

goken32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Given the potential developers, looks inevitable there will be free to play gacha versions. But given south korea’s love for starcraft there would be one that is inline with starcraft 1&2.
Might want to expect some sort of backdoor cheat that only south koreans know of lol 🤣

Profchaos31d ago

Nah that's long since dead and gone it's only good is a leaked Dev build
