Gamecritics writes: "The tilt towards other IP underscores ModNation Racers's lack of identity. This game has generic kart-racing action set in blandly charming places with, ultimately, characters drawn from other universes. Though the career mode story delivers a limp message about being yourself, its main character has no apparent self, and neither does the game. There's no ModNation Racers aesthetic, nothing that makes the experience of playing the game unique or different. The creativity the game allows mostly amounts to window-dressing. Getting to the point where you can fully exercise even that level of creativity requires hours of plugging away at a charmless single-player campaign, which puts even the philosophical identity of the game into question. ModNation Racers has a core of creative multiplayer fun, but it's sadly mummified beneath an irritating career mode and layer upon layer of load times."
Mario Kart has always reigned supreme when it comes to the best kart racers out there to play, but there are still a few other racers that are must-plays.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will be shutting the servers down for two PS3 racing games in July.
Sad, hopefully they make a new Modnation racers game. wait, is it completely shutting down or can you still download tracks?
I had some good memories playing Modnation. :( Sad to see it go, but it was inevitable.
There were plenty of notably excellent PlayStation 3 exclusives that were one-and-done during its long history. Games like Mag, Starhawk, Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet Karting were solid titles that were not given a chance to expand on their potential with sequels. Ironically, the developer of LittleBigPlanet Karting, United Front Games, had another kart racing title prior to this. Its first game, ModNation Racers, successfully implemented an aspect that wasn’t done previously and hasn’t been done since.
I loved this game, and it's a crying shame that the studio closed eliminating the possibility of a PS4/PS4 Pro Modnation game :(
game was great. However it felt soules Mario Kart. The load times on the game for Psvita were beyond horrible
I'm a tool... I'm a tool... oh god... I'm a tool...

There are only a few kart racing games around and no other lets you create your own character / kart / race track. The levels in the story mode are pretty sick at times and give you some fun ideas to play around with when you create your own tracks, which I've seen some pretty nice ones and you can go into some sick detail when you're making your own. As for lack of identity and characters from other universes, its a game like LBP where it is only limited to your creativity. No other racer out lets you build your own character, kart, and track, and share them with others to play or add to them.
The load times are one of the only things that cripples the game and would have had it receiving higher scores. I like the hard AI, too many games that just let you win without trying, and it felt rewarding as hell when you beat some of the different challenges to unlock various items. It won't win GOTY, but it definitely should get 8/8.5's.
