ModNation Racers is certainly a worthy follow-up to LittleBigPlanet as part of Sony's Play Create Share initiative. While it might not have the unstoppable charm of Sackboy on its side, it easily surpasses Media Molecule's game in terms of accessibility. It's so easy to create in ModNation Racers it's silly, but that ease comes at the price of variety. You can spend hours and hours creating custom content to your heart's content, but in the end, you're just kart racing.
Mario Kart has always reigned supreme when it comes to the best kart racers out there to play, but there are still a few other racers that are must-plays.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will be shutting the servers down for two PS3 racing games in July.
Sad, hopefully they make a new Modnation racers game. wait, is it completely shutting down or can you still download tracks?
I had some good memories playing Modnation. :( Sad to see it go, but it was inevitable.
There were plenty of notably excellent PlayStation 3 exclusives that were one-and-done during its long history. Games like Mag, Starhawk, Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet Karting were solid titles that were not given a chance to expand on their potential with sequels. Ironically, the developer of LittleBigPlanet Karting, United Front Games, had another kart racing title prior to this. Its first game, ModNation Racers, successfully implemented an aspect that wasn’t done previously and hasn’t been done since.
I loved this game, and it's a crying shame that the studio closed eliminating the possibility of a PS4/PS4 Pro Modnation game :(
game was great. However it felt soules Mario Kart. The load times on the game for Psvita were beyond horrible
This quote sums up my feelings about MNR:
"It's so easy to create in ModNation Racers it's silly, but that ease comes at the price of variety. You can spend hours and hours creating custom content to your heart's content, but in the end, you're just kart racing."
Thankfully I love kart racing, but MNR pales in comparison to LBP in terms of customization. MNR lets you place a tree by the side of your track; LBP lets you design your own tree, animate it, bring it to life with logic and have it chase you down the road.
It's a trade-off that I'd rather have seen sway more towards giving players more creative freedom. As it stands the MNR track editor is not anything revolutionary - TrackMania is a good example of a game with a better one (IMO). Though I've yet to see a kart racer with a track editor, so MNR IS offering at least a small thing new.
Another thing is that they list the weapons as an advantage. I counted the weapons, and included powered up versions. Crash Team Racing, which also sports powered up versions of weapons (using a much fairer system than "collect 3 of these and everyone dies") has about TWICE the number of weapons as MNR, and that's including MNR's shield and mines. MNR's weapons are a weak point in the design in my view.
