GamesRadar: ModNation Racers Review

Even if MNR was ‘just’ a racing game, the annoyances would be minor. But ModNation Racers is far more than a kart game – it’s the new friendly face of DIY gaming. The creation tools are accessible and the editing mechanics comfortably familiar – more so than any other ‘make your own’ style game on PS3. It even caters to classic, often overlooked, split-screen racing alongside conventional 12-player online play. It’s the only kart racer you’ll ever need, and although not the best racing experience out there, it’s certainly the most fun. And if you don’t enjoy what’s on offer, you’ve only yourself to blame…

this is my game to pick up this month

thereapersson5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

I've been waiting for this game ever since I saw the very first trailer, so that's quite a bit of time to be anticipating a game above all others. I LOVED Little Big Planet, but I hope I can get into Mod Nation Racers just a bit more than LBP (certain aspects of LBP I felt weren't fully realized, or that the developers could have done certain things they didn't).

I didn't know it's coming out next month, which makes it even better. 9/10 is a great score for something so adventurous and new, especially something that has such a heavy Mario Kart comparison. I love the creativity and user-content-friendly nature of PSN games, and the freedom that it gives developers.

Now if they'd only bring TrackMania to the PS3, we creative-minded racers would be set. I also wish that rumor about Gran Turismo 5 having a track editor was true... :*(

The reviews for this game is amazing.....I think something is telling me to hold off AW for a week.....might get MNR.

ReservoirDog3165500d ago

I so wish I could get this...

Between RDR and SMG2, I'm at my limit.

Too bad.

blusoops5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

Get it later on in the year. The summer is always a great time to catch up on your back catalog...plus, by that time, there will be plenty of great user tracks available.

As for me...DAY 1 !

ReservoirDog3165500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

Very true. Still, my backlog of games is really starting to grow. Between FFXIII, Heavy Rain and Alan Wake.

Well, at least I'll get it at a reduced price right?

Seriously? haha damn

Loads of great games out this month, but sorry ModNation Racers is no where near the top.

redDevil875500d ago

The reviews for this game are great! I knew they would be good but i didn't think they'd be this high. Gotta love Sony for promoting and encouraging the innovation behind this game :D

I hope someone makes Bowser's Castle from Mario Kart 64

thereapersson5500d ago

We don't want another copyright problem, which is what LBP ran into early in its lifespan.

simplyRealistic185500d ago

i was expecting an 8.5 or something, not bad, but then again theres not that much you can actually hate about a game thats have editiing tools, your bad experiance would be your fought

thereapersson5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

But it looks like they, too, can't deny the awesomeness of this one.

I'm curious to see what EDGE will give this game, seeing as how they loved Little Big Planet so much and are big proponents of innovation in videogaming (at least that's the guise they use in order to bash anything PS3 related).

edit @ below:

Thanks for the link! 8/10 from EDGE is a good score then, though I still don't trust their reviews one bit. I just like to see what sort of BS they can come up with on a regular basis in order to justify their hypocritical ethics and scoring system. Like giving Modern Warfare 2 a 9/10; what, on God's green Earth does MW2 do that's even remotely innovative? LOL!

I usually add a couple points onto most games that EDGE reviews, unless it's obvious they're falling into hype for games that in no way deserve it, which I then completely write off the whole thing altogether.

Edge are just a bunch of trolls that managed to become famous.

OT: This game looks freaking awesome, getting this next month for sure.

darx5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

Is my reading comprehension off a little at the moment...a little smoked out. But is he saying the racing isn't all that great but the editor is awesome?

Didn't feel like reading again.

5 Best Kart Racers That Aren't Mario Kart

Mario Kart has always reigned supreme when it comes to the best kart racers out there to play, but there are still a few other racers that are must-plays.

Modnation Racers and LittleBigPlanet Karting Servers Shutting Down

Sony Interactive Entertainment will be shutting the servers down for two PS3 racing games in July.

Teflon022602d ago

Sad, hopefully they make a new Modnation racers game. wait, is it completely shutting down or can you still download tracks?

pody2602d ago

This is what I'm wondering also. There's so much quality maps available online and it would be unfortunate if people couldn't download those anymore.

Teflon022602d ago

Yeah, I didn't play much online anyways. But I always use to play local multi with my cousin and download so many amazing levels. Sadly 8 didn't get to platinum it. Had only the create trophy, level 30 and 100 races i think left. I had I believe 87 last time 8 checked lol. Might go on to see if I can get my last few lol. Remember my win ratio was decent since I did around 160 races maybe, 170 ranked

pody2601d ago

@Teflon02
Yeah same here, but I actually jumped in not too long ago to play again and it's still holds up great for a 8 year old game. It's was a really good game when it came out and it still is.

Chaos_Order2602d ago

I had some good memories playing Modnation. :( Sad to see it go, but it was inevitable.

ModNation Racers: The Forgotten Gem

There were plenty of notably excellent PlayStation 3 exclusives that were one-and-done during its long history. Games like Mag, Starhawk, Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet Karting were solid titles that were not given a chance to expand on their potential with sequels. Ironically, the developer of LittleBigPlanet Karting, United Front Games, had another kart racing title prior to this. Its first game, ModNation Racers, successfully implemented an aspect that wasn’t done previously and hasn’t been done since.

I loved this game, and it's a crying shame that the studio closed eliminating the possibility of a PS4/PS4 Pro Modnation game :(

XisThatKid2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Imho this is my fav kart racer. I still play Everhart now and then to this day.
Other than load times the game was excellent

danny8182871d ago

game was great. However it felt soules Mario Kart. The load times on the game for Psvita were beyond horrible

S-Word2871d ago

Sony should've kept going with this instead of turning to LittleBigPlanet Karting.
