Why Crysis 2 is the best-looking game on 360 (and PS3)

'Crytek's reps take time out of their Crysis 2 presentation to focus on CryEngine3 and all the fancy new stuff it can do. It's during this demonstration that we catch the briefest of glimpses of Crysis 2 on 360 and PlayStation 3 running side by side. Deep breath. Ready? Both versions look exactly the same...'

I really dont get graphics anymore. They said they were ging to maximise the PS3's power but they end up looking both the same?

Lou-Cipher5554d ago

Well, after seeing the new trailer that just got posted, I don't think Crysis 2 matches Gears 1 graphics, much less a PS3 exclusive's graphics.

I really hope that new trailer wasn't the PC version, because it would be a huge step back (graphical) from the first Crysis if it was.

FangBlade5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

I know right?
It looks like all Crytek did is just pure PR talk.
Crysis 2 will look good no doubt about that, but not as good as Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 that's for sure. They're just using the reputation they gained after Crysis 1 to promote the consoles version.

Death24945554d ago

"But however you react, Crysis 2 is what it is. It's the best looking game on console. Or rather, the best looking game on 360."

Like he said, it will be the best looking game on the 360. Still tipping my hat towards KIllzone2

Shaman5554d ago

Ah...i see some people are butthurth :D

Shaman5554d ago

He said best looking game on both consoles, not only 360...

Blaster_Master5554d ago

Actually he said best lookin game on console. It was a singular noun. You understand journalist these days try to trick people into thinking certain notions, but then when put under pressure by people who aren't stupid, they refrain from what they said and presume with it as it was like they meant to spell it. Of course, its all just a waste of life. Journalist these days suck for the most part. Anyone could be one.

"There is no real reason for choosing Microsoft's console to showcase its baby, Crytek explains to flustered journalists at the reveal. They just had to pick a side and figured they'd run with Xbox 360."

Hahahaha, ya right.

StanLee5554d ago

I said it before and I'll say it again; it's BS! They claim they're maximizing the PS3 and the game is the best looking game on the PS3 and blah, blah, blah but the console versions look the same. It's PR garbage!

MNicholas5554d ago

The trailer showed average graphics (low polygon character models, even the metal pipes inside the helicopter are just flat painted textures, smoke/dust is terrible) with above average destructibility.

The only visual effect that genuinely impressed was volumetric god-rays.

raztad5554d ago

I remember an article from Gamespot saying FFXIII was crispier on the xbox, and we know what really happened, so I would wait a little more before taking the phrase: "both versions are identical" too seriously.

incogneato5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

"and PS3"

lolno. crysis 2 graphics are crap and already surpassed by other ps3 games. plus the game isnt even fun, its only popular for being a terribly developed game that needed tons of power to run on PCs.

UnwanteDreamz5554d ago

"But however you react, Crysis 2 is what it is. It's the best looking game on console. Or rather, the best looking game on 360."

Quoted from the article he never claims it is the best looking PS3 game idiots

Darkstorn5554d ago

We'll see. Crysis will have a hard time dethroning Uncharted 2 and GoW III on the PS3, but I think it has a chance. Those guys at Crytek are geniuses.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5554d ago

Crysis 2 is the best looking game on console. Boom.

There's your takeaway statement. There's your excuse to scurry for the comments section foaming at the mouth, dismiss this article as the ranting of as a clueless moron who doesn't know what he's talking about or read on in interest. Perhaps even all three.

But however you react, Crysis 2 is what it is. It's the best looking game on console. Or rather, the best looking game on 360.

"What about PlayStation 3?" you cry, waving a DualShock3 in disgust. Blame Crytek for that one.

When we attend the Crysis 2 world premiere in New York earlier this week, it's obvious from the Crytek turnout that they know that you know Crytek can make great looking PC games (see Crysis 1).

The only question mark hangs over the studio's ability to take advantage of CryEngine 3 on console. That means choosing between showing gameplay on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. They opt for 360.

There is no real reason for choosing Microsoft's console to showcase its baby, Crytek explains to flustered journalists at the reveal. They just had to pick a side and figured they'd run with Xbox 360.

"They shrug off the decision with a casual indifference that suggests they aren't quite aware how hot the frontlines are in the console war, having come from the solidarity world of PC.

It's worth nothing that Crytek's reps take time out of their Crysis 2 presentation to focus on CryEngine3 and all the fancy new stuff it can do. It's during this demonstration that we catch the briefest of glimpses of Crysis 2 on 360 and PlayStation 3 running side by side. Deep breath. Ready? Both versions look exactly the same. And relax."

wicko5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

I'm pretty sure that there was a video about the features in each version from the developer, and how they were not the same. I'm pretty sure they don't look identical. If I can find it I'll post it.

Well, can't find the video but at least from this article: http://www.thesixthaxis.com...

There is a quote from a guy who works at Crytek: “If the game’s shader-heavy it runs a bit faster on 360; if it’s compute-heavy with physics and particles, then the SPUs take over and it’s a bit quicker on PS3.” That alone basically shows that they won't be the same. I'm sure they would take advantage of each consoles strengths.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5554d ago

"Crytek decides to run through a hefty chunk of gameplay in real-time to prove that what we are witnessing isn't an elaborate smoke and mirrors act.

As with most real-time demonstrations, it lends a clumsy but authentic feel to the demonstration; indeed, it's easy to picture that what Crytek shows off is the exact same experience gamers at home will have (especially given whichever Crytek employee was at the controls had almost no aim whatsoever with their shotgun).

So how does it look? Well... awesome. Crysis 2 is the kind of game that makes it all too easy to stray into list territory when describing the visuals. So we will anyway: Glass shatters and falls under gunfire; bullets ping off concrete blocks while throwing up thick clouds of dust; cars warp and crumple under heavy alien feet; buildings shake off suffocating layers of settled dirt thanks to nearby rumbles and shockwaves, often caused by aliens bursting through the concrete.

Yet picking and listing the ingredients does a disservice to the overall c*cktail of visual splendour. It's the way everything hangs together that made us want to check round the back of the screen to see if the leads were running to a 360 or a nuclear-powered PC."

Ju5554d ago

Why are you posting the article in here ? Afraid people are too stupid to click a link (annoying). ...

IdleLeeSiuLung5554d ago

... and a multiplatform that look identical? That is a tall order, but I will judge once I see it!

You know, people are so die-hard in really graping the straws for the 360 is that they will take something positive from the PS3 and then add the 360 into the mix. Let's take a look at this comment for example:

"Crysis 2 will reach graphical ceiling on the PS3"

Now because it's a multi-plat game (PC aside), they will eat this up and spin this in favor of the 360. **Note how they ONLY mention the PS3 and not the 360 in that same sentence.

Remember the FFXIII fiasco?

-End statement

WildArmed5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

lol.. it's funny how the media and some gamers eat up the PR crap.

If every time the PR team said that (and it was true), we'd have a new graphical king every few days.

I'm not doubting they have their PC tech down, because these guys know their stuff.
But working with consoles and working w/ PCs are very different things.

(note: This is an educated opinion of mine. I do not have any experience in developing game or w/e. So sorry if any of my info is incorrect.)

StanLee5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

It's PR crap but you have to understand what it means if true. If the game rivals Uncharted 2 or God of War III and it runs just as well and looks the same on the XBox 360, fanboys get to say "I told you so!" They now get to point fingers at overused middle ware and dated engines for the short comings graphically of XBox 360 exclusives and not the console's hardware. Worst yet, if the game is all on one disc. I can't even imagine the uproar when Rage comes out.

Hotel_Moscow5554d ago

of course it will be the best looking game on 360 the 360 has no games

Hotel_Moscow5554d ago

im suprised as hell that i have that many agrees i was just trolling

NateNater5554d ago

Yea I'm surprised too haha. Well it just goes to show how people really view PS3 and 360 on this site. There's a ton more PS3 lovers.

yoghurt5554d ago

I think this game is being way over hyped - 'best graphics ever say cvg', best fps of the decade say examiner

Well, the trailer I have seen (I assume is the same as everyone else) the graphics look nice yes, but nothing special atall let alone best on all consoles

why is this being hyped so much?

Hellsvacancy5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

It WONT b the best lookin PS3 game

Im no even all that bothered bout Crysis 2 anyway, ill more than likely rent it

mcnablejr5554d ago

i have been renting alot of sp games recently, or ones with mp which doesnt warrant a full purchase.

I mean whats the point of paying full price for something you wont pick up again more than once or twice.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142193d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2192d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2193d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2193d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2193d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2188d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
