Legend of Dragoon 2: The Time is Now

Heath of RPG Land talks about the PlayStation 3 hitting its stride, and why it's in Sony's best interest to get cracking on the much-requested sequel to Legend of Dragoon.

LOD2 would be an awesome move by Sony and would really help position Sony as the JPRG console to own (its doing a good job these days after a slow start).

I think Sony should look into getting some of their JRPG franchises back into action like Arc the Lad and Legaia while attempting to get one of the Western devs into making a WRPG (would be be very interesting).

That said, LOD2: just do it Sony!

Well, "this time last year" being March, and talking about exclusives, there was not yet Demon's Souls, God of War Collection, inFamous, Katamari Forever, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, no Rachet/Clank Future, and none of the huge games that have been release in the first quarter of 2010 (like Heavy Rain, MAG, and GoW3).

It's no secret that a lot of people were mocking the PS3's sotware offerings, even into 2009. The article doesn't say that they were justified, it just states that as part of the climate of the time.

Actually I dont know if you realize it, but this sites main subject is RPG's and 2009 was a dead year for PS3, so if he talk about JRPG's then hes right when he say "or to some people, its lack of lineup" after all FFXIII, Star Ocean The Last Hope INTERNATIONAL, Resonance of Fate all is 2010 release and Demons Soul didn't come yet to EU ppl must w8 until June for official release, anyway PS3 now start to do something about JRPG's but even with all these we have a 3+ year old console with 8-9 RPG's and ofc not all is good enough to buy them.

The first took 3 years to make. So assuming they could make the sequel in same amount of time and they start now we would not see it till 2013.

Might as well be a PS4 project. Unless the development is already begun, possible but wishful thinking.

This time last year Sony had Killzone 2 in the first quarter and it had inFAMOUS around the corner. It had just wrapped up the holiday season of 2008 with Little Big Planet and Resistance 2 if memory serves right.

As for Legend of Dragoon 2: Do it. I've been waiting for a sequel/prequel/HDremake/ANYTHI NG after completing the first after it came out so many years ago. Its battle system is easily in my top 5 from any RPGs ever. It kept you involved and required some timing to keep long combos combos going.

Does Sony even have a studio thats free to work on this? From Software is working on Demon's Souls 2 more than likely and Level 5 is only working on WKC 2 (maybe Dark Cloud 3). Is there anyone else around who can make a good Legend of Dragoon 2 game? I'm not sure there really is.

never played Legend of Dragoon, but from what i have heard about it, it's a top game.

Sony could at least release the orginal on psn if sells well then they should consider a sequel.

I didn't try this game since in 99/2000 I was too busy to play any game but I decided to take a look at old reviews from IGN and gamespot and what were the scores? 70/100 and 6.4/10!! now I'm not sure why some of you make this game a legend but if sony wants to make a sequel then they should improve it and make it a better sequel but I will understand if they decided to not make one ;)

Funny i never got the chance to experience the Legend of Dragoon series but i keep hearing good things about it. Last gen the only RPG i bought was FF10 and that was a beautiful experience. I would definitely buy a next gen Legend of Dragoon game just to see how it is. After all, the word the gamers is all that counts.

The game needs a release have the first game come to the PSN and star working on a sequal or hell I would play a prequal to the game showing the Dragoon wars. There are some old titles I wish Sony would dive into aswell for RPG's. Like Legend of Legia, Wild Arms 6 would be nice as well but they need LOD badly.

The next Wild Arms is more likely to come out for a handheld, since the series isn't all that popular anymore, nor has it even had a good game since the second one. Not to mention, a handheld game is far easier to make, takes less money and would probably make more money. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms for the ps3, but it would need a major improvement/overhaul from the past few games for me to buy it.

As for Legend of Legaia. I know some people liked the two games, but I found them both pretty bad. Decent combat, but some of the most bland/unoriginal storylines and atmosphere of any ps1/ps2 RPGs that I played. Not sure how well the games sold, either, and that would probably be the most obvious aspect when they consider making another one.

LoD was good and I would love to see a sequel. I think the game, lately, has been getting a little bit more praise than it deserves. Great storyline and good graphics at the time, but the game was trying to compete with FF at the time and all the unpolished aspects of the game made it seem a bit low-budget (I know it wasn't). Also, I know on a lot of gaming forums people want a sequel, but the first game didn't sell very well, so I'm not really sure why people think a sequel is a forgone conclusion at some point in time. A remake, or more likely, a retelling of a story in the same universe by the same developers (who are still around) seems like a much better option. Sort of like a relaunching of the game, because if they came out with a game called "Legend of Dragoon 2," most buyers would have no idea what the game is and why it's labeled with a "2."

For new ps3 RPGs I would like to see a remake/sequel/prequel to Xenogears (Xenosaga was crap in comparison...still half-way decent, but definitely not great), a new Suikoden game (likely this will come eventually, but just hope it's for the ps3 and not handheld), a Tales game for the ps3 (I sold my 360 a few months before it came out, and it's really the only game I really feel I missed out on, on the 360).

Also, observing at this point in time, it's probably never gonna happen, I would like to actually see a sequel to the Lunar series on the ps3, and not another remake/rerelease of the first two. The first two games still have one of the best stories ever, with great characters. The only problem with the game is the extremely outdated battle system (it could almost be considered outdated when it was released on the SegaCD). A new Lunar on a next-gen console with a majorly upgraded battle system is right up there with Dark Cloud 3 and Xenogears remake/sequel/prequel for games I would like to see made.

Myze you have to understand Sony does not own Xenogears, Xenosaga or Suikoden those are owned by other companies along with every other RPG on the PS2 and PS1. Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms, Legend of Legia, Roug Galaxy are Sony owned titles trust me I to want to see a sequal to or a prequal to Xenogears but thats in the hands of Square to do. Just hope they bring the game to the PSN for download. There are alot of great RPG's out there I want to see remade like Breath of Fire, Grandia, Arc the Lad, Rouge Galaxy but thats up to companies like Capcom Square to do.

I realize Sony doesn't own a lot of the games I mentioned, but didn't realize we were only talking first party, also Sony would have a say in certain games. Dark Cloud 3 and Rogue Galaxy are both Level5 games, but Sony owns the IPs, so they would be responsible for their releases. Suikoden is solely owned by Konami, but since Suikoden 1-5 were all ps1/ps2 games, it would make sense that Sony could ask for the game (same with other non-first party RPGs). Sadly though, with Suikoden, like I said for Wild Arms, the series has almost been played out, but I still hope for a ps3 Suikoden 6.

Really, I think Sony needs to buy a good RPG development team, because I don't think they have one. They could buy Atlus or NIS. They should have bought Level5 a few years back, but now it may be too late, since they may be a little too expensive now, but that would be the ideal company to pick up, especially since they have such a good relationship with Sony. Sadly, I think their Layton games do too well for them to consider it. The LoD team is about the only dev team I know they own that do RPGs. However, I'm not sure they've released a game since or before LoD. They were supposedly working on a ps3 MMORPG called Angel Rings Online, but that is almost certainly vaporware considering not a peep about it in 3 years or so. Maybe they have been working on a new game, though, and we will be surprised by it at E3, or (more likely) TGS.

Magnus LoD sell 2m copies (500k JPN, 1m US, 500k EU) in total that's not bad sales like you say, go check how many JRPG sell under 100-200k but their companies release them even if they know that this is all what they get, anyway a remake of LoD will sell gr8 imo because it has a gr8 theme with the dragoon war etc & the transformations the game was beautiful in combat mode & the additions is the trademark of LoD battle system I love it from the first moment because you didn't sit idle just giving orders while doing battles.

Myze Xenogears is my all time favorite game along with FFVII it has the greatest story & soundtrack in any JRPG I have play, agree with you that they must make a new Xenogear game and I hope that it will be half as gr8 as Xenogears was..

I fully support this message. I so think Sony should make Legend of Dragoon 2. Plus I also want Sony to make more RPGs starting with LoD2 and Alundra 3. Sony has made over the year great RPG's and so their is a big list of RPG's Sony can make.

I would so love Sony to bring back these RPG franchises Drakan, Wild Arms, Legend of Legia, Beyond the Beyond & Arc the Lad. Sony has made many wonderful PS3 games. But my favorite genre is RPG's. So I hope Sony will look at there catalog of excellent RPG's and bring them out on the PS3.

Plus I would be thrilled to see them come out on PSN too.

The oly difference pertaining to the topic here is that Sony owns no part of that brand. On the other hand, Sony alone has the power and authority to make LoD 2.

I was big into nintendo when this game came out and the only game i owned on the ps1 was ff7 but a friend picked this game up and i had to have it.I didn't even look at reviews back then but let me tell ya as far as draging you into the story this game does it.I'm shocked the reviews were that bad. i mean it looked like ff7 and it played somewhat the same and it drags you into the story just as well as ff7 did.If you guys that haven't played it get a chance play it please do and let me know what you think of it.

This game wasn't as good as some make it out to be. The story was decent at best but it was hampered by a horrible translation. I can't see them making a sequel to this game if one wasn't made for the ps2. I enjoyed it at the time but it hasn't aged well at all. Back then, i'd have given it an 8

Legend of Dragoon is one of my favorite RPGs. I would LOVE for this game to come out, and if it did, I would absolutely buy it on the first day. It was fantastic, and I'd LOVE to play a sequel.

Legend of Legaia was another great game. I heard about it recently and started to play through it, and it's very fun. I'm eager to see what they would do with a sequel.

I would like to see a sequel to LoD. I enjoyed the games' combat system, which was way before it's time. My biggest, and only complaint was when you were traveling from one zone to another, you a: were stuck on a set path, and b: the disc changing was awful. You would leave an island or country progressing along, 1/2 way through your travel you would change the disc. Get to your location, wait now you get to go back to where you were a min ago. Change disc again! So annoying.

Admittedly I never beat LoD, I was close to the end(probably a few hours off from being done) when I accidentally erased my save data =(. I just couldn't stomach the disc changing(again). So I gave the game to a friend of mine who loved the hell out of it.

well, if we are strictly talking about rpgs, then sony should concentrate on bringing Legend of Dragoon (not a direct sequel please) and Wild Arms. I didn't mention level 5 because they are already working on rpgs for Sony. Media Vision and Sony can seriously compete against the big guys with those two rpgs I just mentioned. I became more excited when i played Wild Arms 5 because I thought the girls looked pretty cute or they have that wild west sexiness which I really like. I am just curious how "sexy" the next Wild Arms game is going to look like on the ps3 because i seriously think Media Vision can get more attention from the audience if they play their cards right with "sexiness."
