Super Mario Bros. 3 sells another million copies 20 years later

Pushing Buttons stumbles upon the news of Super Mario Bros. 3's success in the year 2009:

"To put this accomplishment in perspective, New Super Mario Bros. Wii tallied 1.4M units in 2009, making it the year's 10th best-selling game in North America (this, despite being released in the middle of November). Super Mario Bros. 3 – with its 1M paid downloads across the year – would almost certainly have found a seat at the top-20 table, if not the top-15."

it sold more than xbox live arcades top download. Just goes to show the power of a brilliant game.

That's $5M dollars in profit for Nintendo in just the USA, for a 20 year old game.

badz1495176d ago

it's mario, no other reason needed for purchase!

tunaks15176d ago

"it's mario, no other reason needed for purchase!"
Maybe because Mario most likely indicates it a great game
SMB3 is one of the greatest games hands down.

ThanatosDMC5176d ago

It's my favorite Mario game.

SaiyanFury5176d ago

It's no surprise that Nintendo saw great Mario 3 sales. It, and the original Super Mario World are the best games in the entire series. That, of course is my personal opinion, having gone through them both. I still think Mario was at his best in 2D much the same as Sonic, even though Mario's 3D outings like Super Mario 64 and others have gotten good reviews. Those games are indeed great, but as an old school gamer, I'll always prefer Mario and characters in 2D, the same as the Sonic the Hedgehog series was back in the days of the Genesis. Disagree all you like, this is only one man's opinion. :)

I will admit I did not read the article (I will after this post) but I do have to say I did download this game in 2009. Actually, there was a deal Nin offered to those who bought the wii web browser previously. You were given the opportunity to download an original nintendo game as compensation for the browser purchase.

I chose mario 3 (as I'm sure others did as well) so could this possibly be the accumulated total of downloads based on that promo worth 500 points ea?

A free game that isnt so free because it was only offered to those who bought the browser after a specific point in time. I would rather have gotten the points to use elsewhere but the offer was for an original nintendo game only. No real points were given to be used for the purchase.

Definitely a better download than mario 2. Flying as a raccoon was better than pulling roots to throw at the enemies.

nice!
This should serve as reminder to those saying old school design is no longer relevant.

20 years making the SAME games again and again, WTF?

FragGen5175d ago

All entertainment/media industries totally (heart) people who buy the same thing a bazillion times in eighty different formats paying for the same thing that they already own over and over.

Like people who diligently bought their favorite Fleetwood Mac release on 8-track, then on Cassette, then on Vinyl, then on CD, then on iTunes, and then as a ring tone.

That's why they throw a fit when things become copyable/transferrable. They lose all of those pure profit sales.

As a consumer, *I* (heart) emulators. I own exactly one copy of SMB3 and can play it when and where ever I want.

Solidus187-SCMilk5176d ago

I could just play some super mario all stars on my snes or zsnes but id still like to dl it maybe.

NegativeCreepWA5176d ago

Has it really been 20 years, I feel old now.

35 years later, Mario 3 still does some things better than every Mario since

If all the world is a stage, then Mario is adept at playing all the roles – something Miyamoto was very keen to tell us.

3 had a good balance of difficulty before crybabies stepped in and cried about the difficulty of SMW, which is why the game was made easier before release. Would also explain why most other games have been easier except for special worlds etc.. or ones you unlock after you beat the main game.

Isn't the reason we got a Doki Doki Panic sprite swap because Lost Levels was originally deemed too difficult?

ChasterMies185d ago

This is a lot of revisionist history. All games back then had to be difficult or else they would be over in less than an hour. Super Mario 3 was actually super approachable because you could use the map and warp whistles to go right to the boss. And as with Super Mario World, you could farm stages for more lives. The beautify of Super Mario 3 was the abundance of secret areas and tools like Hammer Bros. suits. You didn’t really want to rush it. The lost levels were a different beast. They were never marketed as a mainline Mario game.

qalpha184d ago

I watched an interview with a developer (I think it was for Disney's Aladdin) from years ago and he said they were required to raise the difficulty because so many games were rented back then. They didn't want the game finished quickly so you had to rent it longer. it was the home-rental equivalent of pumping more quarters into an arcade machine.

Rebel_Scum185d ago

The cry babies? It was Nintendo’s perception that yanks didnt like difficult games hence the easing of the difficulty.

ChasterMies184d ago

This is an odd statement considering the history of Japanese games that had you press X on your way to victory. Seriously, games like Ninja Gaiden in the 00s was born of the developer’s belief that Japanese gamers had grown too soft.

CrimsonWing69185d ago

Yep, it's the best 2D Mario game, in my humblest of humble opinions.

goldwyncq185d ago

Still my favorite Mario game.

Terry_B185d ago

SMB3 and Mario World are still the best Mario Games.

Goodbye New Mario, I Won't Miss You

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest306d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__305d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic306d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

Asplundh305d ago

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51306d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos305d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz305d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183305d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

That Time Princess Peach Enslaved Toads in the Mushroom Kingdom

Princess Peach. Beloved royalty of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the constant damsel in distress that sets the tone for most Super Mario games. However, there is a darkness in this one, and she is not all smiles, pink hearts, and expensive parasols. No, no. She is not quite what she seems.
