DICE 2010: Darksiders' creators find success in chaos

"I almost wouldn't recommend doing the things we do," Joe Madureira, creative director at Darksiders developer Vigil Games told a group of games industry colleagues at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas last week. "We're reactive and off-the-cuff."

But sometimes "reactive and off-the-cuff" game development works out in the end, even if it may cause some headaches along the way. Austin, TX-based Vigil Games, founded in 2005 by David Adams and renowned comic artist Joe Madureira, released its first game in January this year with Darksiders, an action-adventure game based on one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Darksiders is chump change for THQ, Warhammer 40k MMO is what they are banking on from this awesome developer.

Darksiders is an incredible game and has done very very well financially for the company and will continue to sell, no chump change there, as will WH40K.

Darksiders is hella fun w/lots of great gameplay. I'm 18 hrs. into it and maybe just about half way.

@xgamer.. couldn't agree more. I finished it in 22+ hours but had youtube help on later levels which were frustratingly difficult for an FPS guy. That too after the game was banned in UAE.

Prob one of the few RPGS i've sinked so much time. My ME time was few hours only.

Man, so defensive. He never said Darksiders was bad, he just suggested that compared to the possible cash cow Vigil studios Warhammer 40k MMO could be, Darksiders is chumpchange. Which makes complete sense. And btw, Darksiders is an Action Adventure game with RPG elements.

I loved Darksiders, and I abbsolulty cant wait for a sequel, just need to finish the first one but its there in my stack of incomplteded games.

Darksiders is great but the bosses were to easy. The last boss was especially easy to beat on normal difficulty but that fight itself was really good.

Darksiders is one of the biggest surprises of 2010 as for now.

Great game!!!

I would second that, of course it's always relative to someone's expectations. I expected just an ok game but it surprised me and was a lot of fun; enough so that when I finished it I wished there was more to play and I am hopeful for a sequel given how it ended.
