Tech Analysis: Mass Effect 2 | Digital Foundry

There was always the sense that Mass Effect was a console game where the ambitions of the developer were held back significantly by the technology utilised. BioWare's use of Unreal Engine 3 was an inspired choice in creating the look and feel of its epic space opera, but in terms of the basic performance level the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect was legendarily disappointing.

Digital Foundry's first, brief hands-on with the sequel was uniformly positive. But a hand-picked demo of a specific level is one thing, and in-depth analysis of the complete game is quite another. In this feature Digital Foundry will be measuring Xbox 360 performance of both Mass Effect titles, then factoring in and evaluating the PC build of the sequel.

360 version holds up pretty well

ProjectVulcan5608d ago (Edited 5608d ago )

Well it should. Its DESIGNED for 360 first and foremost.......lol. The Pc version is just a straight over port with minimal effort. Before anyone starts saying how close 360 is to Pc- more like how little bioware improved the game for PC. Performance on this for 360 seems similar to PS3 performance with bioshock 2.

A few weeks ago i noted the complete lack of AA on the 360 version of mass effect 2 and theorised that is where the extra performance has come from to shore up the problems from the first game :) The Pc version is disappointingly light on the enhancements, but as the article says 60 frames a second is easy to achieve and really makes the game feel incredibly smooth. Its also relatively easy to force some AA, even the basic 2 x AA will take away most of the worst if performance can allow it. The control system is pretty good. Pc is where its at if you have the choice

Bioware have certainly fixed most of the engine problems from the first game...

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast194d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine194d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast194d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman194d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast194d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
