GameZone: Top 25 Games of the Decade (2000-2009) - #2 Grand Theft Auto III

GameZone writes: "The end of the decade is upon us and it's time to revisit the landscape of gaming that began in 2000 with the launching of the PlayStation 2 and is now ending in 2009 with three viable console platforms in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Over the next 25 days, GameZone will be bringing our readers the "Top 25 Games of the Decade." Considering how many games released in the past ten years, it was an exhausting process to narrow down our initial list of more than 200 games to the top 25."

I personally was hoping for Demon's Souls on that list but maybe it's too early.

And why no Shadow of the Colossus? Regardless, it's a decent list.

There's a bunch of glaring omissions. Ignoring games on PS3 like the Uncharted series. Also ignoring the Jak & Daxter series on PS2 ruins the list for me. As well ignoring Oblivion's great RPG experience. The Yakuza games were also amazing. I'll say it simply, there's more than 25 games/series that defined the 2000 decade. All are on different consoles. JRPGs, FPS games, JSRPGs, action games like God of War, and many many more. I largely disagree with the list just because of the omissions from the GameCube and original Xbox. Like ranking the amazing Metal Gear Solid 3 less than the original Guitar Hero. I do have my own views as well as others have different opinions.

No way in hell that Uncharted 2 is as close as the game of the decade. Those who would go as far as say that have not played many games throughout the years.

Uncharted 2 is more worthy of being on this list than a good 60% of the games, if not more. All the games on this list are revolutionary for their genres, and Uncharted 2 is the greatest Adventure game I've every played. You have to remember this is from 1999 or 2000.

Now does it deserve the number 1 spot, to me no, but it should be high on any list.

I remember playing this. I had a ball stealing tanks and firetrucks then rampaging. GTA III is what made me buy a ps2 amd ive never turned back.

Im pretty sure the next major GTA will not be here for a few years but I await the next game with patience.

GTA III is a history making Hall Of Fame inductee of a game. (San Andreas was way better) GTA III is like Steet fighter 2 Pac Man Final Fantasy Super Mario Bros. All time classic.

Going by the hint it's either Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead. RE4 in the list maybe, number 1 no way, same as with L4D, in the list because of it's co op.

World of Warcraft should be number 1 HANDS DOWN (i have never played the game)
but 12 million people for ten years now paying $15 a month can't be wrong!! Game of the Decade World of Warcraft!

Or Madden Football.... every year people camp out in line to buy millions of copies, then there are nationwide tournaments, people playing for hundreds of thousands of dollars, playing on a jumbo tron in Times Square. Tv shows, tours, Global bragging rights, No other game comes close to this. WoW!

That was pretty much a dolphin, underwater adventure/simulator. The game still bring wonders to the dreamcast until this very day. AND IT'S ALSO FRICKEN HARD!

I'm sorry but GTA III had a much bigger impact than RE IV. It's also more fun IMO.

WOW is by far the game of the decade though. No other game in history has even come remotely close to the success of WOW. Blizzard laughs when they hear about how "big" MW2 is.

Grand Theft Auto III's influence waned over the last quarter of the decade (just check out GTAIV). A lot more titles are stealing ideas from RE4 and citing it as their inspiration. GTA3 is awesome, but RE4 is going to be influencing gaming for the next 4-5 years while GTA3's influence has fallen recently with GTAIV not replicating the same amount of success.

Now I have played Resident Evil 4, great game but in NO way do I consider this the game of the decade. I don't know what games RE4 inspired because survival horror has been around since 1996 and the game had nothing revolutionary about it. It was a good game but the not the juggernaut that was Grand Theft Auto III.

All types of games since GTA3 have a SAND BOX style of gameplay. GTA3 even pushed the envelope as far as Story and Plot lines, Mature themes, foul language, Replay value, not to mention A.I. of NPC's.

And to say RE4 set the standard for all third person shooters and actions games is ludicrous, The gameplay was linear, the controls were clumsy, the camera angles would get stuck leaving you exposed to blind side attacks. Your character felt like he was running through ankle deep mud. RE4 set no standards and blazed no new trails. Unlike these games...

#3 Half-Life 2-- This is the BENCHMARK, THE PLATINUM STANDARD for all single player action games. Quality unsurpassed started by the fan voted greatest character Gordan Freeman. "GRAVITY GUN" enough said!

#4 Counter-Strike----- When a developer makes an online FPS, they hope it's half as good as this. Halo Battlefield Series Call of Duty Unreal Quake Modern Warfare Series all fell of the Counter Strike tree.

#5 Final Fantasy X ---Will push the Graphics of any console to perfection. You can't say RPG without mentioning Final Fantasy
consoles sales go up like no other when a Final Fantasy game is released.

#6 Deus Ex--This is a Gamers Game, maybe the first Action/RPG FPS made that really made the player make decisions that had a definitive impact on not just the ending but how other events would unfold.

When you go somewhere, anywhere and you see 50 people talking who look like they don't even know what pac man is, retelling the moments of last nights raiding party, then you know this game is huge. WOW!
