Alan Wake dev not including game's Ending in press copies

According to a Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne, the studio wants to discuss the possibility of leaving the ending of its upcoming thriller Alan Wake off discs sent to press

There's only so many ending it could be without the ending being total bullshit: Happily ever after, His wife dies, He dies, His wife is already dead, He doesn't have a wife, He's insane, It's a dream, He's actually a character in a book someone else is writing. It's not like any of those endings will really be a shock.

Well a lot of them reviewers don't even play the game through really. They do a few levels and then make their reviews. Pretty pathetic, but its a race against other reviewers to get theirs out first. Sad, but true.

I think this is a good idea. They can review gameplay, story, all of it, but just not the ending, nothing can be spoiled or leaked.

Yeah, I actually give them credit for such a ballsy move. If anything, it gives me more faith in the game having a compelling storyline, but my main concern is whether or not the gameplay is actually their. If the story is good enough, it might be enough to make up for it.

I think to get a review of a product the reviewer needs to see the entire thing. Especially when the ending is fundamental to the story.

You couldn't test drive a car with no wheels, so why take away the ending. If the ending is terrible i would like to know before purchase so i don't invest and waist to much of my time to be disappointed. where as if its a good ending then all the review will say is "its a grate game" hardly spoiling if for me, and confirming that is worthwhile purchase

I think a missing ending is a lot different than missing wheels on a car. BTW, would you save your money if you knew the ending was bad? I think the adventure getting to the ending is the best part.

The reason why is because a car with no wheels can't be test driven. The fact that they can't see the ending doesn't mean they can't play it through. I mean, how long does it take for a reviewer to give their honest opinion on how good a game is.
Just take a 10th of a point off, and keep it moving

Well, a bad ending can ruin the whole game. I don't think this is a good idea because an aspect of the game will be left out and reviewers will not have the complete experience.

first off, why do you care? you're not a reviewer. Second, GTA4 had a horrible ending and that didnt ruin the game. Not providing an ending for reviewers should not taint the aspect the game. Just because you don't know what happens doesn't mean you cant give a review about gameplay, graphics, sound, replay, or presentation. It's not a demo...it just doesnt give the ending. There's no argument here

Talk about lack of confidence in your product.

If they leave out the ending for people who are REVIEWING the game, then the game should receive no review scores, and only written overviews of the game, a basic write-up---which is probably not what they want.

I agree with you that the ending sums up the game obviously. But as a reviewer you can analyze graphics, sound, story and everything else without finishing the game. Besides it would be a cool review to have them talk about the story and leave it as a cliffhanger. It would probably make me more excited.

DO IT! That's a fantastic idea...far too often is the ending leaked online and pirated. I highly doubt that those pirated copies never came from a press copy. It would be hilarious if they did this and everyone was DL'ing it and not seeing the ending.
