Dead Space Extraction sales are not good

TVGB writes: "Confirming what we already expected, a NeoGAF user believed to be Louis Gascoigne, a programmer at Visceral Games, has said that "nobody bought" Dead Space: Extraction, likely meaning the game has not met sales expectations. In addition, he reiterated that the game was a test of the Wii audience, and that Extraction's sales will affect the company's future projects on the Wii."

Hardcore games, new IPs that is not Mario or Zelda, DO NOT sell on the Wii. Why do they find this surprising? Release Dead Space FIT and you would have sold a million unit in the first week. Most developers still do not understand the audience of the Wii. If they understand, then games such as Dead Space Extraction, Mad World, and other hardcore games would also be on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Smacktard5352d ago

Mad World would've sold just as badly on other consoles, just like God Hand sold poorly on the PS2.

Dead Space: Extraction sold poorly because it was a rail-shooter on a system plagued with rail shooters. Do something new instead of same-ole.

gaffyh5352d ago

Madworld had enough hype to have sold at least more than the Wii version if it was released on either PS3 or 360. I guarantee, if it came out on either console, it would have sold more than it did on Wii.

SpoonyRedMage5352d ago

...but it probably wouldn't have got the hype if it was released on the PS3 and 360 as it would just be another bloody hack and slash game and even though it might have sold more on the HD consoles it might not have got the same amount of profit(and yes it was profitable). Also as pointed out God Hand, it's spiritual predecessor on the highest selling console of all time sold at least three times less than Mad World.

EvilTwin5352d ago

There's a glut of rail shooters on Wii. Dead Space is a relatively new IP; new/casual gamers don't know about it, core gamers don't want a rail shooter.

As for the MadWorld stuff...umm, it sold niche numbers because it was a niche game (and apparently recently turned enough of a profit that Sega is happy with it).
The Clover/Platinum guys just do this. Okami has been released on the best-selling console of this gen and the last, and it still probably hasn't moved more than half a million copies.

Relatively new IP can work on Wii (No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Trauma Center, Shaun White, etc.), but established IP (RE, COD, TW) is ALWAYS the safer bet, which is why we get so much of it (and it does sell on Wii).

njr5352d ago

What do you expect? Although it is pretty sad games like Mario Party 8 and Wii Play outsell it by millions.

qface645352d ago

hmm dead space + on rails = not so great sales
resident evil + on rails = really good sales
anyone else seeing something here

anyways to be honest im no help i forgot all about this game
but if im gonna get an on rails game id rather get that new resident evil seems alright

Syronicus5352d ago

They should have put this ont he real hardcore systems and left the Wii for the silly little casual games. Sorry, but this would have been a day one purchase for me but since the Wii dumped me as a hardcore gamer, I too dumped it. I released my Wii a while ago and won't look back. If they want to make some cash, sell this game in an updated version ont he PS3 and 360. Good gravy!

mint royale5352d ago

Well said smacktard.

Okami, one of the best games of all time flopped on the ps2 for god's sake.

If the game was advertised and not a crappy on rail game it would have done much better.

MEsoJD5352d ago

but that doesn't mean the majority of their customers purchase games at

a constant rate. Most buy a wii for wii sports and leave it at that.

Games like madworld would of done great if they were on psn or xbox

live marketplace.

ico925352d ago (Edited 5352d ago )

wii play sold 21million excuse my french but thats a FU*KIN joke

Product5352d ago

so EA is going to blame customers for poor sales of a lightgun game with almost no replay value?

Not to mention that NO retailers outside of gamestop even had the game. No Walmart, Target or Best buys in my area even have it in stock

Sorry but until devs start treating the wii with respect i could care less about your sales and this coming from a guy who bought the game, loves it,but realizes it should only be a rental

Mahr5352d ago (Edited 5352d ago )

Geez, I knew this story was coming, but I really didn't think it would be this silly.

In the first place, did anyone -- *anyone* -- actually look at the story? The *entirety* of the article is 'some guy on Neogaf claiming to be a game programmer has said the game hasn't sold well'.

Hey, great evidence right there. Who needs numbers or official statements when you have some dude on an internet forum claiming that he's one of the game's programmers? I mean, it's not like there are people on the internet who claim to be things they're not all the time.

I'm curious, does everyone here actually *believe* it when they get emails saying they've won the Venezuelan National lottery?

"Hardcore games, new IPs that is not Mario or Zelda, DO NOT sell on the Wii."

If either of those statements were true, developers would stop trying to make those kinds of games for the Wii.

"Why do they find this surprising?"

Assuming that Guy On Neogaf was telling the truth -- it would be 'surprising' because previous games in the same genre with the same style of gameplay on the same system were fairly, and in some cases *extremely*, successful.

"If they understand, then games such as Dead Space Extraction, Mad World, and other hardcore games would also be on the PS3 and Xbox 360."

Er, not really. Both games were fairly dependent on motion controls, particularly Extraction, which was a lightgun game. Maybe it'll be a different story when the HD motion controls come out, but as is, people would have to use a gamepad to play it. Believing that a lightgun game playable only with a gamepad would sell anything even remotely acceptable in terms of numbers is probably the most insane thing I've read all day.

As for MadWorld, Sega's said that that game was an experimental success, so I don't know why anyone's complaining about that anymore. I mean, official statements from Sega executives to the press clearly aren't as solid as something like a random Neogaf user to everyone here, but come on.

"Dead Space: Extraction sold poorly because it was a rail-shooter on a system plagued with rail shooters."

The system is not 'plagued' with rail shooters like Extraction (i.e., lightgun style); there are something like five others, two of which were arcade ports, and one of which isn't even out yet.

"Madworld had enough hype to have sold at least more than the Wii version if it was released on either PS3 or 360. I guarantee, if it came out on either console, it would have sold more than it did on Wii."

Madworld would not have worked with a gamepad. I guarantee it would have sold less -- Wow, making declarative statements without any form of evidence to back them up sure is easy.

"so EA is going to blame customers for poor sales of a lightgun game with almost no replay value?"

EA is not blaming anyone. The whole story is someone on a random game message board claiming to be one of the devs saying "it's a shame". The only people blaming anyone are the usual knee-jerk crowd trying to find something to complain about.

Look at this.

"Confirming what we already EXPECTED, a NeoGAF user BELIEVED to be Louis Gascoigne, a programmer at Visceral Games, has said that "nobody bought" Dead Space: Extraction, LIKELY meaning the game has not met sales expectations."

Wow, what a confirmation.

SinnedNogara5352d ago

The reason I don't intent to buy it is:

1. It's a rail shooter, crappified for the Wii.
2. The developers didn't call it a rail shooter, they called it a guided first-person experience. That is BS.

Product5351d ago

@mahr
i usually agree with you but codecow indeed works at visceral just as capkraig(which also uses neogaf) works 4 capcom. Many devs actually use neogaf, hell even pachter and jaffe use it. just saying.

Mahr5351d ago (Edited 5351d ago )

"i usually agree with you but codecow indeed works at visceral just as capkraig(which also uses neogaf) works 4 capcom"

If true, then I apologize. However, as I'm not familiar with neogaf, I'm fairly curious as to how this was verified.

I'm not surprised to be honest.
I've been thinking of getting this myself but I'm not that interested in the Wii anymore and I'm holding out for Silent Hill instead. Maybe some stage i'll pick it up

Razzy5352d ago

Silent Hill is another game that probably won't do to well on the Wii since it's geared towards a mature crowd.

I'm planning on picking up the PS2 version though.

monkey6025352d ago

Unfortunately you're probably right. At least I'll be able to enjoy it myself. Hopefully Halloween will boost these games sales

Didn't realise there was a PS2 version

Razzy5352d ago

According to IGN's website they're also making a PSP version. I'd say Konami must've been a bit concered about the sales of the Wii version & decided to develop the game for multiple platforms.

SpoonyRedMage5352d ago

I got it but seriously, it's a rail shooter.... it's seen by most as dumbed down spinoff. It had no chance especially considering that Dead Space isn't an established, blockbuster IP like Resident Evil.

butterfinger5352d ago

exactly how I felt about it. That's why I won't be picking it up. It's not anything like the PS3/360 version. I'd rather have full control of my person, personally. Rail shooters were fun in the arcade days though. :)
