Tekken 6 PS3/360 : The resolution game

Digital Foundry on Eurogamer writes:

"In Saturday's Digital Foundry "not so high definition" feature, we talked about the technical reasons why some console games don't actually appear to be running at the lowest HD standard: 720p.

We revealed that Namco-Bandai's forthcoming Tekken 6 is one of those games, but also stated that the additional graphics processing introduced at the lower resolution, surprisingly, produced a higher overall image quality than the game's in-built HD mode which actually runs in excess of 720p.

Our analysis was exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game, and we promised an update on the PS3 rendition, so let's get going. To put it simply, there's good news and bad news here."

So what the article is trying to say is PS3 fans are well and truly F*CKED only choice is to play the xbox360 version which is superior version.

Also this is the first time Tekken will be on xbox360 which goes to prove all previous Tekkens on ps the developers couldn't show the true potential that is until they got there hands on xbox360 which will show case how Tekken was suppose to look and play.

ultimolu5690d ago

"Overall, although there's really nothing in it in the heat of gameplay, we'd take the PS3's blur-off 576p 2xMSAA picture as the best IQ option available across both versions, the realisation of which suggests that the whole game would've benefited a lot more with the more traditional arrangement of native 720p and MSAA."

Learn how to f*cking read idiot.

callahan095690d ago

Umm, what?

In addition to the quote from the article that Ultimolu put forth, there's also this:

"One thing that is admirable is that there's also obvious evidence of Namco making use of the extra space on the Blu-ray disc. Tekken 6 data weighs in at around 20GB. Intro and ending movies tend to get the full-on CG treatment beloved of the Tekken series, and it's good to know that Namco-Bandai has taken a zero compromise approach to them, using the maximum bandwidth available that the freedom of a 25GB Blu-ray disc offers."

So the pre-rendered stuff is 1080p blu-ray caliber stuff on the PS3 version, and not on the 360 version due to space limitations on the 360's DVD format. Couple that with the Digital Foundry's conclusion that the PS3 version looks better, well, I think it's clear that saying "PS3 fans are well and truly F*CKED only choice is to play the xbox360 version which is superior version" is just wrong.

DaTruth5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

Why don't they just put the CG movies on another disc and they can swap out every time a CG movie needs to play? We know 360 owners don't mind disc swapping!

callahan095690d ago

Sometimes this site makes me seriously worry. People are actually disagreeing with the notion that the 360 version is NOT the winner on this one? It's right there in the article! The best looking version of the game is the PS3 version with motion blur turned off, in the opinion of Digital Foundry. And the pre-rendered cutscenes are in full HD quality on the PS3 version, and not on the 360 version. So how exactly is MetalGearRising getting so many agrees? If you read the article, I think it's pretty clear that PS3 owners are getting the better version with this one.

Very interesting read.

If I have some money, I'm getting Tekken 6 too. Haven't played a Tekken game since Dark Resurrection. I'm gonna be rusty. :(

hay5690d ago

I don't really care about all the pixel counting and gonna preorder it probably for my console of choice no matter if it has few pixels less in gadzillion times zoom. /downplaying the role of comparison with premeditation.

In your effing dreams fanboy.

josuttis5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

It's not like this is the first game this gen that has been downgraded because of the 360.

The PS3 has a massive graphical power advantage over the 360. A bigger graphical power advantage than any other gen in console history.

It goes all the way back to the PS3 launch. The 360 could only run Ridge Racer at 720. The PS3 was able to run it at 1080p 60fps.

And it has been like that for this entire gen all the way up to the latest games. The 360 can only get the worse looking Forza 3 to run at 720p while the PS3 is able to have Gran Turismo 5 running at 1080p 60fps.

The PS3 is pumping out double the pixels per frame with ease over the 360.

And yes, Tekken 5DR runs at full 1080p 60fps on the PS3. How can anyone not know that?

St05690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

@1.3 Um, it was 1080p 60fps. Tekken 5 was a last gen PS2 game ported to PS3 so it was easy for the devs to make it 60fps 1080p

Sarcasm5690d ago

""Tekken 5 was already running 1080p 60fps on the PS3"

Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection was rendered in Native 1920x1080 60fps. It's not a dream or a lie considering it's really an upgraded PS2 engine. And it's not that taxing on the hardware either.

n4gn4gn4gn4g5690d ago

I don't have the game...but Gamasutra stated the above facts.

http://www.gamasutra.com/ph...

Running at full HD (in up to 720p or 1080p) at a promised 60 frames per second, the new version of the 7th iteration in the long-running Tekken series makes boss character Jinpachi Mishima playable for the first time.

ultimolu5690d ago

Poor Stan. It's alright, really it is.

Is this what Microsoft stands for these days? Having games downgraded just to please their fans and upset the other side?

I cannot and will not support a company that does that.

Either way it's good to know that Sony was very smart when they went with bluray.

yippie1234y5690d ago

anyone who has ever messed with their video card settings knows if you reduce the resolution but add filters and what not you can actually gain fps and still have a good image, possibly a better one.

why in 2009 do developers and sites still need to tell us that?

How the heck can it be "dumbed down" if the 360 version holds a better resolution and the lead platform was the ps3??

StanLee5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

Okay, let me clarify something; Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is a PSP game. The PSN version is a upscaled PS2 game. Now to Tekken 6; the biggest talking point of Tekken 6 was the motion blur in a fighting game. The motion blur IS the reason it would be so technologically demanding. And you have to turn it off for the PS3 version to run comparably?! How is that an a plus?

Sarcasm5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

"How the heck can it be "dumbed down" if the 360 version holds a better resolution and the lead platform was the ps3?? "

They are the same resolutions until you turn off the motion blur effect on the 360, then the 360 version runs in the higher resolution. But it doesn't have any MSAA. The PS3 version just stays in one resolution, but once you turn off the motion blur, it runs in 2xMSAA.

So both versions are Gimped.

And the "lead platform" is actually the Arcade, not the PS3.

Don't you guys know how to "READ???"

Kushan5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

Sorry, but where's the evidence of anything actually getting gimped? If you read both articles, particularly this one, you'll notice that they used a very different rendering technique for the 360 version that's better suited to the hardware, so how does that make the PS3 version "gimped"?
Considering Namco have used full HD videos for the intro/outros of the PS3 version, that says to me that they're willing to take advantage of a machine's strengths when they could have easily used the same video resolution on both.

Just because both games happen to run comparably well does not mean that it was in any way "gimped". If you REALLY want to accuse Namco of gimping the game, go do some comparisons with the Arcade version, if you can find hard evidence that the Arcade version is "superior" in any significant way, you'll know for sure since that version ran on PS3 hardware, but until then all I see is speculation.

Prototype5690d ago

I'm not a graphics person (read my comment history if you don't believe me) and I don't care how "clean" or "flashy" Tekken 6 is I'm concerned about how fun the game is. The last Tekken I played and enjoyed was Tekken Tag Tournament Arcade (and 3 on Playstation with Gon and Bosconovich); and I will kill to at least play it one more time if I can ever find an arcade machine.....

If anyone wants to practice on Tekken 5 Online on the PSN add me (Nitrojin) I could use some practice :D

Bottom line is they can argue all day about the resolution, it doesn't mean s-it if the game doesn't deliver.

DaTruth5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

We just had a whole article of the 360's failings the last time around(they needed two pages). Now they address the PS3 version and can't find a technical reason for the resolution to be lower! None of the comparing all the titles that run below HD, because PS3 exclusives only run in HD!

By not discussing any technical reasons why the PS3 version is sub-HD, and discussing many reasons why the 360 version is sub-HD, they have absolutely left us with the impression that it was only to cater to the 360, and the 720p mode on the 360 is just to get around Microsoft's requirement that all games render at 720p(which wasn't withdrawn until this game was well into development).

Sony never demanded 720p and HD resolution problems only come up in multiplatform development, even when the games are technically inferior to PS3 exclusives rendered in 720p!

Dannagar5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

The arcade architecture for Tekken 6 is based on the Playstation 3 hardware. The Playstation 3 rendition of Tekken 6 wasn't dumbed down for the Xbox 360. There's isn't anything in the article or the internet to support that idea. If Namco could do better with the PS3 hardware, they would have. The port over to the Xbox 360 is a fantastic port. I had the opportunity to play both at E3 and both versions are great. No matter what system you have, if you're a Tekken fan, you'll be happy.

vhero5690d ago

Even so it looks god damn terrible graphics wise and no nex gen game especially a fighter should be less than basic 720p HD. I mean that beats the purpose of nex gen consoles my PS2 can handle upto 720p for crying out loud. So 720p should be minimum especially for something as basic as a fighting game where there isn't much going on on the screen at once. It's just LAZY development just like Bungie with Halo. Maybe if it stayed exclusive this wouldn't have happened but who knows?? It still probably wouldn't This is Namco/Bandai after all there will probably be another 10 characters on the disc you cant access without paying for! Look at DOA that game goes upto 1080p for a perfect example of a fighting game that can do it.

Winter47th5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

I won't support Namco this time. Shame, Tekken was my favorite series. I'll miss Bryan Fury. But Namco's known for their quality and how much they reach their fans' expectations, and for them to gimp the game like that for the sake of an inferior console which their game won't sell half as good on it due to, well, the worst fighting controller in the last 4 generations, that's simply unacceptable.

vhero5690d ago

@Winter47th - Totally agree mate Namco since merging with Bandai have changed from a loyal company who make plenty of money from their high quality games to a company who only care about cash and bring out average games. Soul Calibur was a huge disappointment and no doubt this will be too.

Kornholic5689d ago (Edited 5689d ago )

Some of the most popular current gen games have Sub-HD resolution, Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for example.

600p for Call of Duty 4 console versions and 640p for Halo 3.

PS3 the superior version once again.

Cwalat5690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

So if i understand correctly, they'd go with the PS3 version with motion blur-off as the winner.

If both versions have the motion blur-on, the 360 version looks better. But the overall winner for them interms of technical graphics is PS3 version with motion-blur off.

I'll try both motion blur-on and -off to see for myself which one looks better. But if it's already locked at 60FPS i don't think i'll need an extended motion enhancer inorder for it to look like it's running at a higher FPS.

Been waiting for Tekken 6 for way too long, and it's just around the corner! =) No comparison or winner of comparison is gonna change my mind and not make me pick up Tekken 6. Come Oct 30, Kazuya and i will own you all online ;)

Sarcasm5690d ago

I think we all want the best possible graphics we can get, but for fighting games it's an exception IMO. It's good that they prioritize a solid frame rate and responsive controls over native resolutions. Because at the end of the day, 720p or 576p, you're playing a fighting game in which every move is essential.

gtamike1235690d ago (Edited 5690d ago )

Will be getting the PS3 Version because i've played all the others on Playstation. I think most of the Tekken fans will getting the PS3 Version also, but not the ones that say the last one they played was Tekken 3 maybe.

ceedubya95690d ago

But that's based on friends list and the fact that my arcade stick is for the 360.
