Sony shows their exclusive desire to win the next-gen console war

Gameplayer writes: Microsoft are usually the ones associated with opening up the cheque book to secure exclusive content on multiplatform releases, but now Sony has shown its willingness to do the same thing.

"The next-gen console battle is by no means a new thing and just when Sony and Microsoft seemed to be reaching a point where they were looking for new ways to win over new clientele, they've reverted to old tricks. It would seem that having various exclusive titles to wave at each respective opponent's face isn't enough for the two battling companies, as they've both been guilty of forking over funds to secure exclusive content for multiplatform titles."

M$, unmentioned in this article, also has a deal with Modern Warfare 2 DLC too.

Assassins Creed 2 will probably have those weapons for sale in both stores after their psp version has time to sell. And take notice to how i said "their" psp version. Sony isn't paying for this, the assassins creed devs want the psp game to have better sells and this is a way to do it. M$ doesn't have another platform to boost sales from.

They're hardly doing ANYTHING similar to what M$ is doing and i kinda wish they would. M$ will never stop trying to 1up sony with multi-plats so Sony should absolutely fight back.
Thing is, Sony chooses to spend it's money on it's own games and we all see that they're better for it.

You're a fool if you truly believe that no dev wants to simply "see what they can do" given all the advantage of working on a PS3 exclusive.
The 360/M$ limits what online user created content is allowed even though they're already hacked.

Their on-disc encryption makes the size of games limited to something below what their last gen console was capable of and now that they're HiDef that constraint is felt even more.

No HDD in every model is not only limiting already but M$ forces the games made on it's console to HAVE to be accessible to all their user base.

There are obvious advantages to working on a game for the PS3 exclusively. Good devs don't want to be limited and want to show what they really are capable of and the 360 simply does not allow for that.

I honestly dont think Sony paid Rockstar for this. Atleast not directly in the form of dollars. However they will assist Rockstar with development aswell as marketing which definately is valuable. Thing is Rockstar North has a longstanding relationship with Sony. Alot of their success is thanks to the PS2. So while Microsoft would have to pay for this kind of deal, Sony is in a different position as they have proven what they are capable of. Also since PS3 is a more powerfull hardware and much less limited when it comes to space (bluray + harddrive) it is an ideal platform for a developer like Rockstar North who take great pride in making great games and dont want to be limited (hence why they complained about the lack of storage on the 360)

Sorry but Microsoft does this at a whole other level. Many developers have spoken up about it. They literally drop big bags of money for exclusivity, to steal exclusivity, etc. They actively do this all year long. Sony doesn't.

Nobody's claiming its "wrong", actually I always wondered why its been a big criticism of micro this gen, when in fact sony has done it plenty in the past, and "buying out" studio's is just a bigger way of "locking out" non-ps owners from playing games by that particular dev studio= I still say "why not?" thats called business, its a reality of life, the more "exclusive" content you have the more attractive your platform becomes. Now the point heres is obviously sony extremists have made micro out to be the devil for this tactic when in fact sony has done it, is doing it and if were talking about "buying exclusives" is a negative stigma because it limits "fans of their games" from playing them, then buying independent studio's ultimately accomplishes that on a even larger scale indefinitely. I think what some are really upset about is the fact that micro has created a strategy to compete with sony having more in-house studio's by simply "paying off" more 3rd parties, and thats whats really pissing off sony loyalists. Either way gamers aren't "entitled" to a any game, sequel or not unless they PAY FOR IT, if that means buying the "other" console then again lifes a beatch if you don't pay for the things you want. I don't think Sony has to pay for exclusive. Sometimes influence is enough. I mean Sony and Warner are working on DC Universe, so it's pretty obvious Warner would be willing to hand Joker as an exclusive. Other platform owners should be glad that Sony is allowing GB on other platform since Sony owns the IP. If Ubisoft does not take advantage of the PSP to PS3 connectivity, then I would say it's quite foolish of them. I've been dying to see more PSP to PS3 features and now it's happening.

Sony pays for exclusives, they have 2nd party studios you know. Sony probably has more developement studios than the Xbox has games coming out this year.

The video game indrustry isn't simply business, it's creative work, where creative people are that don't want to waste their time producing the same crap over and over again. The want to create something they are proud of. Currently this means eliminate as many surrounding limitations as possible and a step away from the 360 towards the PS3 eliminates quite a few of these limitations.

Hideo Kojima already felt limited by a 50 GB Bluray DL disc when he created MGS4.

I think of it more like this: It makes me a customer with higher standards who's expecting the purchased tech to work as advertised, not to break down after a few months, with disc scratching and disc reading errors in between.

I had my colleagues 360 for a weekend some 2 years ago and grew tired of watching that: "Please put the disc in a Xbox 360 system." video because the damn thing wouldn't read them properly. Additionally I have managed to screw up a game by tilting the Xbox 5° while the game was running. And it RRODed in front of my eyes back at his place while playing Assassins Creed.

What do you say? Plenty of reasons not to like the 360 don't you think? I like the games, but I won't throw my money out the window to play them. Some are coming to the PC anyway, only 1 or 2 titles I am interested in remain untouched.

The AC2 stuff won't actually make much odds when you think how few people will get both games for both platforms-however cool the extra content. Call me thick but a full exclusive game like SCC from Ubi or Quantum from Recmo(PS3) are a far bigger deal than DLC which usually finds it's way to both HD consoles anyway.

Am I missing anything? All of the exclusive games that the 360 had at E3 except for Milo were sequels (all but one are games with guns): Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Halo ODST, Halo Reach, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Forza 3.

There is a certain lack of variety and originality in their upcoming library compared to the PS3 in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with any of those 360 games, they're all going to be a lot of fun (in fact Mass Effect 2 is one of my most-wanted games for sure), but I think the PS3's line-up as a whole is more original, more varied, more compelling. I really don't understand why I'm going to be excited about some unknown Halo game in the distant future when I've got a Halo game coming out this Fall that I still need to consider. The Halo Reach announcement just seemed really... pointless, to me.

Oh well, I can't be correct about everything, I was just sort of thinking in terms of how all the games I saw for 360 had gunfire except for Forza and how they had a serious lacking of new IP's and just lumped everything in one category. I was typing faster than I could think it through, perhaps, because I'm absolutely aware that Alan Wake is a new IP. Got carried away with generalizations.

You're right, Alan Wake is a brand new IP, and I must give credit due for their endeavors in that. But I also feel that my point still stands. There doesn't seem to be much variety in the Xbox 360 line-up these days. And that's a shame, in my opinion, because so far in the 360's life the console has been characterized by a remarkable variety, including the biggest selection of RPG's on a current-gen console, games like Viva Pinata and Banjo Nuts & Bolts, and many many others. Even though Alan Wake is a new IP, it doesn't make up for the lack of new IP's and the lack of thematic variety in the current upcoming line-up of 360 games. That was the point I wanted to make.

Which game did I list that is a PSN game? I specifically stated that I wasn't going to list downloadable games. If one of the games I listed is PSN, which one is it, because I was unaware of it. Is it ModNation Racers? Is it EyePet? I've heard nothing about either one of those being a downloadable game. And all of the others I've heard explicitly that they ARE retail games.

As far as you saying "That's all you can list for the 360" well, why don't you tell me some more? What else is there? I listed Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Halo ODST, Halo Reach, Splinter Cell Conviction, Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Forza 3. As far as I'm honestly aware, that's all of it. If I missed something, enlighten me.

And you say I'm one-sided? No, I'm not one-sided, it's just that the 360 once had a bigger variety of games coming out for it, even as early as the first half of this year (Star Ocean, Halo Wars, Ninja Blade). I once characterized them as having the most new IP's this generation (Crackdown, Lost Odyssey, Ninety-Nine Nights, Gears of War, Infinite Undiscovery, Too Human, Viva Pinata, The Last Remnant, and so many more).

I'm just a little disappointed that they didn't announce any new IPs for retail titles. I think what they did show looks amazing. I didn't even like any of the other Splinter Cell games, but this one looks so awesome I'm definitely going to have to buy it, I think Alan Wake looks awesome, I loved Crackdown and I'll be all over its sequel. I'll get Halo ODST, too. The only one I'm not sure about is Forza 3. It looks amazing, the graphics and customization are awesome, but I'm just not sure I'm going to want another racing game by the time it comes out. Then again, maybe I'll buy it day-one. I didn't like Left 4 Dead, so I don't care about Left 4 Dead 2, at least not yet. Maybe if they release a demo for it and it's become something a bit more grand and more appealing to me then I'll buy that one, too.

The thing is, they only showed one new IP for retail at their presentation, and it's not even a NEW new IP, it's one we've known about for years that's finally coming to light. Of all the NEW retail games they announced, they just announced sequels.

You're right, Crab. I often agree with your comments, and you're right. There's nothing wrong with sequels. In fact, of all the games that I am MOST looking forward to right now, most of them are sequels. I'm just saying, Microsoft didn't blow me away with their announcements. I've come to expect something more from them, and this year's only real NEW thing from them is Natal, and that does not interest me at all. I thought the "games" associated with it ranged from sloppy to boring to lame. I don't have any real desire to skip through my console's menus with hand swipes when I find it perfectly simple to do it with my remote. Where-as in the past Microsoft wowed me with a unique line-up of software that introduced me to new characters, themes, styles, etc., I feel like they didn't provide that this year and rather than showing me their usual varied line-up of new games, I got a tech demo for a piece of tech I probably won't even buy when it comes out in over a year.

I do think it's telling that, other than a single racing game, everything they've got is a shooter. Yes, one of them is a "stealth" shooter, one is an "RPG" shooter, one is a "horror" shooter, one is an open-world "shooter" but they're all shooters, you're running about with a projectile weapon killing people, creatures, aliens. Again, I'm looking forward to all of those games, but I just felt disappointed that there wasn't more. I mean, where was Magna Carta 2 at E3? That would have provided much-needed diversity in the line-up, but it wasn't at the show. The 360 still has a diverse and varied line-up coming, but a lot of it wasn't at E3.

I admit, I'm being more critical of the 360's presence at E3 than I am of the PS3's presence, but there's a reason for that. I've been bombarded with articles and comments on how Microsoft blew the competition out of the water for nearly a week straight now, and it's quite frankly annoying the piss out of me. I've got a PS3, yes, and I also have a 360. And I was presented with a lot of awesome things by both Sony and Microsoft, and I just can't get behind this "winner" business. And the overwhelming response that Microsoft did so much better, well, I see it as bull. So I guess I've become more critical of them, because I've honestly become annoyed with all the praising of everything they did and so much indifference or downplaying of what Sony had.

I'll let you in on a little personal trinket about myself: I can't help it, I'm just an underdog supporter at heart. Thus, when I see everyone lining up to kiss the ass of Microsoft, I come to the defense of Sony. Believe me, I've no loyalty to these companies. If it had been the other way around, I'd be coming to the defense of Microsoft and criticizing the things about Sony's conference that everybody was ignoring.

Yes we know current PC's knock the PS3 out of the park, but not all of these PC's have blu-ray drive etc... what I'm getting at is yes the PC is twice as pwerful but it's soo much harder to optimize on the PC due to the chips and mods people make. I'll contuine to play my PS3 not because it's graphically inferior but I enjoy playing games on a universal system and don't have to worry about upgrading it every couple of months to enjoy the graphics I once did.

Since the launch of the PS3 we don't really have to buy much.

YOU CAN buy a sony keyboard but most keyboards work, it's personal choice.
You can buy a blue-tooth headset but most USB microphones work, as do most bluetooth headset as do most webcams.
You should buy a HDMi is you have a HD-TV but there £12 and universal

The point I'm getting as is the PS3 can be optimized far better than PC because PC's vary so much rarely do developers make the most out of graphics cards or what ever, the sheer power of the rigs makes up for that. But honestly my 512 mb pc can do what I want and that is battlefield 1942 and the internet.

It seems Sony would rather put money into making their own games rather than getting multiplat dlc exclusives. I mean MS would have got the dlc GTA content anyway even if they didn't pay out for it (along with Sony/PC), the only purpose was to deny the competition access to the content.

Though GTA is a huge franchise 50 mil for dlc (which they would have got for free anyways) is crazy it could have been put to much better use by MS on a new games (not just 1)/technology made by them and only for their platform.

I just do not buy games that get released on both consoles but one is getting some content that the other isn't I pay the same price no matter what console I play the game on so I should get access to any content that gets released for it no mater what console I picked it up for. I agree with SuperM it's all bout disc space and hard drive storage. Most Devs don't see that in the PS3. The only reason why they don't go with PS3 hardware cause they know their software won't sell well to make them enough money to make more better games. Just look at some of the games on the Xbox 360 that have to use 3 disc.

Sony never stopped, they were just restricted by a much lower budget due to their lack of profitability for the last 3 years. Without money they can't pay. This is why they claimed to not resort to buying exclusives. Nobody actually thought Sony would say "we would love to buy exclusives, but we're currently broke" did they?

I'm also amazed at how black and white most people think this is. Companies don't have to simply write a big check to get an exclusive. They can also publish for the developer, lower licencing and royalty fees and also supply the equipment needed to start making a game. Another thing they can do is buy companies and IP's instead of the finished product itself. I love how most Sony fans say Sony doesn't buy exclusives and in the same breath talk about how huge Sony's first party studio is. I suppose most people think Sony finds it's developers in the crack of their sofa or maybe in their box of Cheerios. Believe it or not most of these dev studios were acquired with Sony's check book while they were profitable.

Next gen is not just about hardware but also software.

In terms of graphics is another matter to discuss but in terms of unique engines that makes possible to put more stuff on the screen with a high quality of graphics keeps being made by some Sony's exclucive ganes such Uncharted 2.

Not sure why the Xbox360 keeps using that "old" Unreal engine on almost every new game that appears to the system.

if you think that current gen is limited by hardware then you think Xbox360 but if you imagine that hardware is not exactelly a limitation and so you improve your software you thinking next gen, the PS3.

I have a PC, a PS3, and a 360. PC gaming sucks atm. Hardly any good PC exclusives left, the only good games for PC are either pay to play, or made by blizzard. Anything else I'd pretty much rather play on my consoles. Sure there are multiplatforms that come to PC, but 9/10 times they are crappy ports. It sucks, but it's true.

I'm fine sacrificing a bit visually and getting, A: More people to play multiplayer with, and B: Trophies/achievements.

Consoles > PC. Never thought I would say that, but piracy has #$%*ed up PC gaming.

Sony doesn't have to do this as often as Microsoft because Sony has a plethora of in-house studios. Microsoft does this more often because they have less first party studios.
