Square Enix At E3 2009

E3 2008 was massive for Square Enix. They didn't announce any new games, or wow anyone with new trailers for their highly anticipated games. However, they did drop the bomb that Final Fantasy XIII would no longer be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, as it would also be appearing on the Xbox 360.

Since then, support for Square Enix has dropped considerably, and not just amongst loyal Sony supporters. Consistent rumours about Final Fantasy XIII delays and the game's production values, as well as other reports about the company have tarnished Square Enix's reputation in the West. What better place to try and rekindle the love affair than at the biggest trade shown in the world, E3.

Squarenixidos has to do only ONE thing to gain gamers' favor once again: release a great game.

It's very easy to blame the hate against S-E-E as "blind Sony fanboy rage", but Squarenixidos has outright SUCKED this generation, no matter what platform you own. They are worse than their PS2 days, and they are certainly worse than their days as Squaresoft in the SNES and PS1 days.

Take note, S-E-E. Pay attention. Gamers will only be led along the "nostalgia doggie leash" for so long until they grow tired of it. You need to make good games. The name alone won't do it.

Jinxstar5871d ago

I have lost faith is square a while ago. With consistently poor games this gen and little innovation since FF9I am much more excited for level 5 and other quality companies. Square hasn't put out a quality product in years. hopefully FF13 can change that but I don't think so. Only hope in my opinion is Versus even that is a stretch though...

Godmars2905871d ago

No,

At this point they have to release a great game w/o basis.

They've alienated S/E fans who bought a PS3 and disappointed 360 fans who weren't expecting games on that system.

They have to make games for gamers. And considering that they've always shrived to make cinematic titles, the Star Wars of RPGs, I don't see them doing that.

Name Last Name5871d ago

why u call em squareenixdidos? they didnt merge, one bought the other

gamesmaster5871d ago

i think FFXIII has lost alot of the buzz it had say a year and a half ago, SE are so quiet about it, they released a demo of the game which they themselves stated is not at all an accurate representation of the games current state.

Square-Enix need to make Japanese games for their core Japanese fanbase. that formula is what attracted us western gamers to their games in the first place. i dont think SE will impress anyone at E3..

SpoonyRedMage5871d ago

I own a DS and I can tell you there's been nothing but greatness on the platform. I know their highest rated is a rerelease(Chrono Trigger) but there's also stuff like TWEWY and Echoes of Time.

They need to release a great "HD" game!

N4g_null5871d ago

It seems to me most of the hate for this company is coming from them supporting the other side. No one complained about these guys when the game was exclusive and this game was one of the main reason to get the PS3. I mean this is the main problem with fanboys. They are trying to decide the console wars when it is not theirs to decide. You can not argue people into like your side or supporting your console by attacking them or only supporting stuff because it's only on your system.

Another thing is many of you claim to use to like nintendo. It was this same attitude that kept nintendo down all those gens, put don't any thing that was not 1st party or exclusive.

These guys basically gave Sony there start in gaming, with out FF they would be MS's xbox 1. The hate here also shows PS2's hardcore are not really posting here. Many are still waiting on this game hell even I am. They may not be the top tech wise any more but they are pretty high up there in other spots.

gamesmaster5871d ago (Edited 5871d ago )

I don't personally have any hate for SE at all, its more that i feel a little bit disappointed in what they have offered this generation so far.

Iv played their games since the snes and ps1 days and in comparison to back then (regardless of whats system they release on) the quality is just not there, you cannot deny that.

also to say that SE gave sony the head start in gaming is just shocking. it sounds as if you jumped into gaming during the ps2/xbox generation. have you forgotten that the ps1 introduced the disc format to consoles as well as bringing driving simulation (Grand turismo) to the casuals and hardcore alike. not to mention metal gear, resident evil, tekken etc.

putting this down to "sony fanboy hate" is naive, and just sounds a little 1 sided in itself.

N4g_null5870d ago

"ps1 introduced the disc format to consoles as well as bringing driving simulation (Grand turismo) to the casuals and hardcore alike. not to mention metal gear, resident evil, tekken etc."

Can you post some release dates? Do you remember how much people loved the last FF on the SNES. Hell it is still one of my favorites. SONY did not have any of these games till that game. It had a few hits maybe but nothing put them on the map like that one ad. It is still the same idea they are using with blu ray LOL, yet it's not working with people who actually have common scenes.

The PlayStation was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, North America on September 9, 1995,[2] Europe on September 29, 1995

Final Fantasy VII (Square) came out in
1997 January like two year after the system yet the ad came way before.

Please tell me which of these games you believe sold the PS1 before this game? Also just behold all the crap that came that PS fans just seem to not remember LOL.

Hell I don't even think MGS or GTA has even came out during this time?
I mean seriously look for your self that line up was weak!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

gamesmaster have you forgotten the EGM ad where square pretty much told you FF7 would fit on some thing like 36 carts LOL. Yeah that ad along pushed a lots of people to get a PS1. Before many where holding out, sort of like how people did the xbox 360 this gen ,till the N64 came out because they though square was going to make a N64 game. I me really can you even tell me a game that came before that ad that really made you want to get a PS1 I mean was it crash bandicote whatever?

I mean really GTA and all of those other games came much later like a year or two but by then the PS1 had taken off. That is why PS3 fans made such a big deal about having that game. Seriously that game could have made up the difference because girls play it also.... Yet I think square realized that girls don't pay HD money for game systems and kids don't either.

"E3 2008 was massive for Square Enix. They didn't announce any new games, or wow anyone with new trailers for their highly anticipated games."

So then it obviously wasn't "massive" for them. I don't consider a dead series (Final Fantasy; S-E killed it when they started making the games) going multiplatform to be massive or shocking. I wasn't interested in this mediocre RPG when it was exclusive and i'm still not interested in it.

"Since then, support for Square Enix has dropped considerably, and not just amongst loyal Sony supporters."

Yeah, they lost support from "loyal Sony supporters", they lost a lot of support from fans who were fans of the Final Fantasy games (they lost support when S-E first started making the games and then even more when they decided to downgrade the game to fit it on a last gen console). They lost even more support after that when people started seeing that they can only make mediocre games (especially when it comes to RPGs).

mephman5871d ago

Good job on point two there, when the quote even says "and not just amongst loyal Sony supporters".

somekyle5871d ago

Wow, DNAgent, you're a douche'r, did SE scar you recently or something?

The_Zeitgeist5871d ago

Everyone is still going to buy Final Fantasy.

GameGambits5871d ago

As cool as FF13 and more so versus 13 look I'd be more excited at E3 if Atlus announced a new Persona or Digital Devil Saga for PS3 using next gen hardware.

I'd be even more stoked for a Suikoden 6 on PS3 or heck even multiplatform if it's really good story wise.

I'd be even MORE pumped if Legend of Dragoon 2 was unveiled.

When it comes to RPG awesomeness I don't think RPG fans look at SquareEnix as the king by a long shot.

Oh don't forget a Breath of Fire 6 would make most of us cream ourselves. :)

N4g_null5870d ago

True people just like to hate them. I stay away from the other ones just so I would burn my self out on their games but now they turn the girlie man into a women and rightfully so she looks right for the part, the metrosexual thing was off putting.

The game is still going to have some of the best art period simply because they still use their imagination rather than copy reality and make bad attempts at using their mind to make some hing cool.

Yes I even say this about crysis!

Namikaze_Minato5871d ago

Just give me a new trailer of FFVersus, more gameplay footage of FFXIII (with the new build) and a new game for PS3/360.

And for the fanboys: Square is supporting the PS3 (the one who destroyed everything was Tri-Ace, think about that).

Square is a Multiplatform developer now, like Capcom.

Just believe. I've played the FFXIII demo, and I can say it's going to be the best JRPG of this entire generation. The graphics, the battle system, the CGI scenes. Everything is looking fantastic.

mephman5871d ago

They always were multiplatform, just not with the main series. I mean, they've released like 60 DS games or something ridiculous.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5871d ago

And against all hopes kingdom hearts 3 trailer/announcement please.

Sarcasm5871d ago

"Square is a Multiplatform developer now, like Capcom."

That's BS. There's about 4-5 360 games, and 0 games released by SE on the PS3.

Godmars2905871d ago

They weren't MP during the NES/SNES era nor PS1 era. PS2 era they started when went back to Nintendo remaking old FF titles.

admeister5871d ago

Having played the demo of FFXIII, I have to say that Square-Enix have a quality product on their hands. The battle system in particular is nice and fresh, while not straying too far from the series' roots.

I agree that Tri-Ace are partly responsible for the 360 games, but S-E do have to take some blame, they haven't managed things as well as they should have.

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus546d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda545d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B544d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981545d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot545d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda544d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot544d ago

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay545d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12546d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay545d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183546d ago (Edited 546d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB545d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
