Gears of War Movie is Looking "Incredibly Good"

Personally, I thought Die Hard 4 sucked major a$$ compared to the old flicks, and plus this is the guy who made them awfully cheesy matrix clone, Underworld movies. I don't have much hope for this. Can't Hollywood hire a decent director for a video game adaptation or do they purposely hire guys from the bottom of the barrel, with the intent on making it suck horse gonads? Maybe this will be a lame PG-13 suckfest like Die Hard 4.

i liked underworld 1 and 2... and they were both VISUALLY appealing... movies are driven by story (something which die hard 4 lacked imo) but with this writer this movie is heading in the right direction... you need cool set pieces and confrontations (writers job) and you have to make those scenes LOOK cool (thats where this director excelled in DH 4) ... and how is underworld similar to the matrix again?

LOOKING good and being a good movie are 2 completely different things. The most emotion I've had in the series came from the very first trailer which was done amazingly well and made me buy the game day one. I don't know if there is enough story to make a movie out this game though. Time will tell.

obviously they're not gonna make a clone movie outta the game... we all have seen the video games to movies... and how they change the complete story all together.. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt... but having a writer like chris morgan who's writte cellular tokyo drift and the new fast and furious (which actually had a very good story) helps

Well, the action scenes in Underworld had that "matrix vibe" to them with the slow mo stuff. The sets/production design had that very dark, and Gothic atmosphere. It is raining non-stop with no sunlight or colors other than black or blue. The costumes consist of that leather fetish bullshit. The cheesy heavy metal music throughout the film. It has a female heroine who tries to be badass, etc.

You do realize the Matrix borrowed heavily from Dark City right? Anyhow...outside of being dark, I do not think Underworld was a clone of the Matrix...and as stated....there were movies that had dark the dark setting and style before the Matrix. With that being said....I did not really think the Underworld series was any good...

Look at Dragonball...they Had Akira San the creator of dragonball supervising the whole project and the result is the biggest let down in recent Anime history. They probably paid him a ton of money just to sit down and shut up.

The only movie to film I've watched and was good is Max Payne (average film yes, but as close to the games's story as possible).

I would say give all Anime, comics and games transfers to the guy that did watchmen! The guy is simply put, a genius. He managed to condense the whole watchmen universe in 2 hours flawlessly (a rather complex and inter wind story and character relationship)!

When mindless FPS are getting rapped (e.g. DOOM, Far Cry etc..) lets see them do MGS in a movie... I dont know if I want to watch it really..

Nevertheless, If this guy knows what he is talking about, I really hope he pull's this off, who knows Gears might be the turning point we are looking for...

Pretty much, it just takes one good game->film conversion to set the Benchmark. Silent hill is the closest we've come yet for sure. That film is at least proof that you don't have to "hollywoodify" the script to make it "work" as a film. If you stick close to the original format, you can't go wrong - it was popular for a reason.

It's not only down to simply the inexperience of the director, Neil Blomkamp. MS also had rather large demands so both Universal and Fox Studios pulled the plug.

Well, I'm sure some disagreed, because calling the Silent Hill movie "incredible" is a tad ridiculous. It was "ok" which is only incredible when compared to the vast majority of game>movie conversions. On it's own, the movie was far from incredible.

I just don't see any game to movie transfer ever being good unless they decide to actually put the effort into it to actually make it good. I'm not just talking about money either. There is a reason some of the best directors and writers don't work on the game>movie projects, and it's because there hasn't been a precedence set yet and they don't want to risk making crap.

99% of games aren't meant to be made into a movie. For example, MGS is a great game that has many cutscenes that would seem to imply it would make a good movie. However, I can almost guarantee a 2 hour movie on MGS would be convoluted (to fans of the series, not idiots that hate the series) and silly, no matter how much money they spent.

Anyway, I have zero expectations for GeoW movie because of the idiot that said it was gonna be an edgier Lord of the Rings. The LotR trilogy is the best fantasy series possibly ever released, and one of the best film(s) released in the last 10+ years, so to make a statement so self-indulgent and full of pride just completely turns me off of the movie.

Anyway, I will state now that the movie will suck as bad as Max Payne (big budget, but still utter crap). Hopefully for my enjoyment of movies I will be proven wrong, but I highly doubt it.

Silent Hill was terrible. I looked great but not only was it boring, it was dumb. Think back to the best movies you've seen and think of how a plot unfolds. The story is told THROUGH OUT the film. If a film has to come to a dead stop so that a heap of exposition explaining every single bit of what lead the characters there then it is, in fact, bad writing.

I played for 2 hours, uninstalled and returned it :/ It's sure as hell wasn't fleshed out, it is on par with Killzone 2. Both showed promise but failed to deliver a decent storyline -_-

I love Gears but, if I'm honest, it's just about the last game I'd want to see made into a movie. I was thinking about who can be casted in Gears Of War but I only know one person that can play as Baird. Guy Pearce. The guy from the movie "Memento". I dont think Robert Downey Jr. should play as Dom, I think a Hispanic actor should play as him. Im not sure about Kim, Fenix and Cole.

This movie just seems so unecessary, this games greatest weakness is its story. The MP is brilliant but the story is just downright uninspired - none of the characters are interesting.

The setting is so generic. It never really explains the significance of Gears taking place on a foriegn planet, why make that choice if you aren't going to do anything w/ it.

To make this movie good I really hope they emphasize the horror over the action. Horror movies excel when it comes to killing off boring characters.

The last thing we need is another action movie that climaxes in a drawn out big war scene(LOTR, ID4, Star Wars, X-men, War of the Worlds, The Day The Earth Stood Still)

You'll never see this movie. The budget will get too high for a R rated film and they won't go forward for that very reason. Halo ran into budget problems and Bioshock just got put on hold for a huge budget as well. The potential for bombing is very big especially when you factor in the R rating this movie would have attached to it.

Considering that Gears 2 sold less than the first game and that was about 6 million and the average ticket is about $10. Provided everyone who bought the game goes to see it, it will make about $60 million just off of fans. The movie has to appeal to a much larger audience than that. I'm a huge fan of Firefly and the show averaged about 7 million viewers and sold really well on DVD and yet the movie still barely made 40 million.

I can't see this movie being made for anything less than 100 million.

Personally I liked Live Free or Die Hard and the first Underworld. Wiesman can direct action extremely well and considering Gears will be an action movie, I say he's the right man for the job. Not to mention that all of his films are hits so that looks good to the suits.

Fanboys and people that have nothing else to watch at the moment will run to see it. The fanboys will then jump on every message board they can find and insist that it is a good movie, insulting everyone who disagrees, while the others groan because they spent money to see it. It will be declared another video game disaster and then instead of learning their lesson and dropping the idea, they will instead after waiting a certain period of time will make a second Gears of War movie which will in turn either be a slight improvement or an even worse disaster. The Matrix is a lackluster sci-fi flick with absolutely no basis. It's shrouded in "mystery" throughout...giving you the feeling that there's more to it than there actually is. THERE ISN'T! It was good, but nothing phenomenal.

Underworld is a well-written, visually stunning, work of art.

Story = Locast want to take over earth, humans fight them back. the only plot twist being in the second where u find out the locust are fighting each other, but really, what species doesn't fight between itself?

I saw Star Trek last night and it was one of the greatest Sci-Fis ever made. And I am not even a trekkie. I hope that the Gears movie will be good since movies have not been so great lately and it has been increasingly expensive to go to the movies.

Hell, it is STANDARD now for people to sneak in their own sodas and snacks... it is no longer the "cheap" date it once was. I am glad I got to see Star Trek for free last night, but I will gladly pay to see that again (hopefully in IMAX) the next time.

It will be very hard to top this movie's quality for Terminator and the other films coming up. I hope Gears can be somewhere in the ballpark of being as good as Star Trek was, but that is wishful thinking. Are they gonna cast people from the WWF? Who else could play the steroid induced military members that the game made way too hard to live up to. The problem is 99.9% of those guys cannot act... so now that I think about it, I doubt the movie will be that good at all. Movie Quality = Casting X Script X Budget/Effects... good luck with the 1st two in that equation.

One of the highest reviewed movies I've read about, now that I've seen it, I understand why... no fluff needed.

Just like Doom was going to be an awesome movie, look what happened to that. The plot from the 2 games is already horrible and adapting it into a movie may be the worst move a studio could ever take. It would only appeal to a very narrow audience and it's likely to be filled with cliche after cliche - like the games. Bottom line, I have never played Gears of War for the plot, that's what Metal Gear Solid 4 is for. I play Gears for the action and intensity, and trying to bring that to a movie is likely to just be another video game/movie failure.

Doom 3 was one of my favorite games of all time. I mean, I loved the hell out of the game, playing through the single player the first time was one of the most memorable experiences I have with video games.

I remember being so excited to see the doom movie in theaters. It started up, and right after the first few minutes of the intro, I was furious and ready to leave the theater, and would have, if I was by myself.

Not sure if you guys remember or even noticed, but they just didn't change the script of what was going on, but they changed the whole universe. In doom 3, you found out later in the game, that uac's experimitation with the teleportation devices unleashed the "evil" that possessed people and caused all these monsters to appear.

The movie was completely different. They just made it another RE movie in space. It was all linked back to some kind of gene they were injecting themsleves with. Completely different. And on top of that, you only see two monsters, a few imps and you see pinky for like 45 seconds. Doom 3 had so many monsters, and the imp might be the most common monster in the game.

God this movie really was the biggest video game disappointment to me.
