Motherboards writes: "The Central Processing Unit or CPU is the brains of the modern computer. Two companies have been at each other's throats for many years, AMD and Intel. With the advent of the Core 2 CPU, Intel has been the dominant CPU maker in terms of performance, as AMD's CPUs have simply not competed in pure performance. AMD has been forced to offer their CPUs at a value proposition to compete in the market place.
In late 2007 AMD launched their Phenom CPUs to mostly mediocre acclaim. This CPU had the problem of lower than expected performance and had an issue with TLB instructions that showed lower performance in benchmarks. These were the first AMD CPUs to have quad cores on one processor die in one package. This differed from Intel's approach to the Core 2 Quad which had two dual core packages on one die."
