Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Not Just Another FFX-2

When Square Enix initially announced the Fabula Nova Crystallis franchise, fans didn't necessarily treat it with maximum optimism. One of the games was scheduled to come out purely on mobile phones in Japan, and the other had a suspect name and looked like nothing more than a cash-in.

However, since then, much has changed.

Yea, Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't overly bad and it was pretty enjoyable in my opinion. I just don't think it was up to the standard of the main series.

I think the battle system was one of the better ones. I actually played through the game 3 times; one time for the "story", second for 100% completion (including the entire Via Infinito) and perfect ending, and the last time (much later) just because I wanted more of the battle system.

The battle system is one of the things i didnt really enjoy too much in FFX-2...

Felt like i was playing with Barbie dolls and at the same time an RPG. Dressing the girls up and sh!t...blegh.

Only reason FF13 vs is getting any praise at all is cause FF13 went multi plat. Almost everyone said that FF13vs didnt look that good before then.

I bought ff12 knowing that people say it suck; well to me its okay, but
I will subconsciously by FF13, just for being a final fantasy game.
Anyway, Im sure if people that will like FF13 on xbox360 will most likely
flock to ps3 for FF13-Vs. Hell, if my most love game for ps2, Zone of the Enders make a sequel
on the Xbox 360 exclusively. I will buy a 360 in a heartbeat.
All in all FFVs is going to sell pretty well, because of FF13.

id hate to see zone of enders go exclusive to the xbox 360, i for one am a huge fan, playing the first 2 on the playstation brand. i'm sure alot of other people will be disappointed aswell, not to mention the money they will miss out on in japan, where it is probably most popular.

but it could happen, anything could happen, thats what scares me.

If the PS3 is a lot more affordable by the time versus comes out I'll get one but FFXIII will be on my 360(unless I have a PS3 before it comes out).

EDIT: I disagree with the article though, Versus' chances of outselling FFXIII have improved because of it's exclusivity(and XIII's multiplat nature) as many just won't get FFXIII due to the belief it will be dumbed down.

was ok... very generic story and mostly forgettable characters. The gambit system was cool for like half the game until you had it completely set up....no difficulty in winning the game anymore. You only have to walk through.

That's the only game I want from Square Enix. Kingdom Hearts 3 for the PS3. No, I don't want those KH spinoffs on the DS or PSP. I want an actually continuation or prequel of the KH main story. That hidden trailer at the end of KH2 got me desperate for more.

All hail Nomura indeed. Bringing some of the best games I've ever played. I never once thought I'd see a game with Disney characters having such a deep story on top with incredible gameplay.

As long as Nomura is hands on with Versus it should be okay. Whether he can be talked into developing it as a multi plat is doubtful so I imagine it'll remain PS3 only(wouldn't say the same for KH though as MS will prolly have something to say on that at E3)with his well known opinions.
Ir always looked the more interesting of the two FF13 games to me but, again, we do need to see some more gameplay from both but at least something on Versus would be nice this decade.
Come on SE, you can't have forgotten entirely about the PS3 can you?

Nar apparently Versus is going to be exclusive as it's going to use Sixaxis apparently and Nomura's a big fan of the Playstation. FFXIII isn't his project, Versus is.

I suspect KH may go to the Wii to be honest.

I don't think that the main game would go to the wii. Gameplay-wise, it just....wouldn't work. Maybe a spin-off at most, but I think SE wants their veteran players to be comfortable with similar controls to before. Most of their fanbase are on the 360 and PS3 anyways, or still have only a PS2.

Everything I know about Versus XIII is that it will be more akin to Kingdom Hearts than anything in the FF series proper.

The direction KH2 took in terms of it's action (which was very well executed) will be exaggerated to the extreme. I think Dissidia also demonstrates a lot of really awesome action elements that we can expect to see also appearing in Versus. Wall-running, mid-air sword battles, real-time magic use and hopefully some really interesting use of real physics.

The whole thing will bleed style, but add up to a very satisfying action-RPG experience. It will in essence be Advent Children brought to life.

I never said the controls were executed well. I didn't mean to imply it. Visually and stylistically, the action in KH2 and by extention Dissidia are very compelling; Particularly to fans of Nomura's work. The most interesting thing to me is that I actually see progression from KH2 to Dissidia, and that's a step down in terms of hardware. I'm very excited to see what they're doing with the PS3.

The battle system was fun, and I could see myself playing it again if I had a lot of time and nothing else to do. I was excited to play the real sequel to my favorite RPG, Final Fantasy X.

Versus XIII is obviously going to be its own standalone game though. So it may as well had been Final Fantasy XIV. Either way, its more Final Fantasy goodness, and I'm not complaining.

How do they know this? There's no new info from Square, there's no playable demo, there's nothing about FFXIII Versus anywhere. This article it's just pure speculation.

Square is a shell of it's former self.....especially when you let the creator of the series Hironobu Sakaguchi, and the music genius Nobuo Uematsu go your no longer the same Square Pre-X2.

Oh ive played Lost Odessey. I do appreciate the traditional gameplay elements. I love turn based, but the story was ass. Ive yet to find an rpg this gen that was as good As Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Warrior 8, and FFX.

The Sphere Grid is was also fantastic to me Because it fixed the problems of VII's Materia (while Materia = AWESOME), in VII characters were all pretty generic despite limit breaks.

However in X, each character had its own use, Sphere Grid allowed to learn other character's techniques, but not making the other characters obsolete and swapping party members in-battle allowed you to experiment and enjoy ALL the characters.

Lost Odyssey is good, but Blue Dragon is better but neither is up to the standard of FF or DQ.

Sakaguchi left of his accord because he lost them millions on Spirits Within and nearly prevented the merger. They probably didn't want him to go, especially considering his exit dropped their value even more.

Uematsu just wants to take it easy, he'd still work with Square Enix but he's no longer tied to them. He's also one cool guy.

The only FF I've played is FFVII: Crisis Core on PSP, because I haven't owned a Sony console before the PSP and PS3.

However, I've loved pretty much every other current-gen JRPG with my faves being Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata (Star Ocean 4 coming to Australia end of June, and Tales of Vesperia never even made it over here!). I even enjoyed Last Remnant despite its technical issues.

I'm very interested in both FFXIII and FF Versus XIII equally, as well as KH3 and other SQ titles.

However, there is one thing I've been wondering about - when will we get am open world JRPG? Basically in the vein of Fable 2 or Oblivion, instead of linear areas or simple HUB towns.

JRPGs have been experimenting a fair bit as of late since gamers aren't as readily accepting of traditional JRPGs, so now would be the right time. I'm kind of over the Tolkein-esque orcs and elves of many western RPGs so why not the unique Japanese RPG style in an open world?

If there are any I'm not aware of, fill me in.

If you wanna play some good rpgs. Find a good SNES emulator and download Chrono Cross, and FF4. You can get those for free. Also, if you can download a ps1 emulator and try Xenogears.

PTOM there is section (I think it is the rumor section) that says that PTOM has heard some rumblings that Final Fantasy 13 Versus may actually arrive before Final Fantasy 13. I found that incredibly hard to believe, but I do know that PTOM is an incredibly reliable magazine source that doesn't just spew crap. If anyone here has a subscription to that magazine you may have read it as well. If not go read it. It's in there! Anyways, as awesome as that would be I find that impossible given that there are about a fraction of details released on that game compared to FF13 and FF13 is due out this year in Japan. Go check it out guys......

But they're right. FF vs 13 won't be another FFX-2. FF vs 13 resembles FF7 more than anything else. It's Final Fantasy 13 that resembles FFX-2.

I won't be playing either games though since Square-Enix sucks at mediocre games plus there is no point in getting hyped over yet another mediocre game by a company who doesn't know a thing about quality.
