Once, the Need for Speed brand set the standard for driving games with broad appeal and accessibility. The series' decline into mediocrity has become a case example for the detrimental effects of pounding out annual editions to milk a name. That damage came to a head this past Fall with Need for Speed: Undercover's lackluster reception, the fallout from which finally triggered dramatic changes in EA's plans for the series. Rather than fewer games, though, EA has announced three new Need For Speed titles. 1UP recently got a chance to check out the first of these, Need for Speed: Shift, due to release this fall.
