Launch day Xbox 360s no longer under three-year warranty coverage

It has been confirmed that starting February 2, all launch day Xbox 360s will no longer be covered by Microsoft's three-year extended warranty. The warranty should have technically ended at the end of September last year, but was slightly extended.

so i got my free repair and i can confirm i DID get my actual console back and it is now much quieter and cooler then the launch console i had.

took several attempts over a couple of weeks to finally get it to die, shame it died in the middle of watching heroes on it though.

I can confirm this story. My 360 died after the usual 3 year warranty (and I was really pissed off) but MS replaced it with a new one (still doesn't have HDMI but the manufacturing date is nov. 2008) in just 6 days and I got a 1 month XBL gold for free :).

The first one was far superior to the PS2 in every way... I don't know what happened this time around. Maybe the 2nd console of everyone is a little wacky, like the PS2... but Nintendo's next console was the Super Nintendo, so that's not really true.

i dont care. Im perfectly content with playing Halo 3, the superior console version of Fallout 3, Gears, and many other FPS's and RPG's that i own and will continue to buy for my 360 elite. I love my 8 person party chat, its extremely enjoyable to talk and exchange details to my buddies while we are all playing Fallout 3 or our individual favorite games. Video chat is hilarious, avatars are funny to mess around with, playing all the arcade games the marketplace has to offer is also a plus. I prefer 360's controller, its built with a competitive edge over other controllers. multiplats will flood the 360 in 2009 with a couple exclusives like the Fallout 3 exclusive 360 DLC, Halo Wars and Alan Wake on the way this year, im also alright with that.

Yea, things are pretty good for me and my 360 so no PS3, sorry. Killzone 2 looks great but im sick of games that litter the artistic design with blacks, browns and grays. And since i have a good job i can more than afford everything i want this year, so im good.

I know that the 360 had a lot of problems when it first came out but microsoft fixed the problem with the newer ones.The problem is ps3 fanboys like you can't admit that when sony came out with the ps2 they had a defect It didn't have a high defect rate like 360 but it had one.The harddrive would stop working and say can't read disc.Sony tryed to deny it but lost the lawsuit.You are right that sony would never give a 3 year warrinty on a defect like microsoft did for the 360.Sony only gave a 2 MONTH warrinty from the date of the announcement on the ps2.I went through 5 in 4 year.The first 1 that i bought it went out in about 4 months,i called Sony and they told me that the 2 month warrinty was over and i have to pay $99 to have it fixed and i did.Every one i know had to buy at least 2 ps2s in 3 year and and not 1 person had to buy 1 360 in 3 years.The point that i'm tyring to make is that sony screwed the people more with their 2 month warrinty then microsoft did with a 3 year warrinty.Not 1 person had to pay to have the rrod fixed for 3 years but people had to pay sony to fix their ps2 if the drive went out after 2 months of the day the announcement and that's a fact.

Thats why this news really is one sad attempt to downplay the 360. Sure it got problems but a 3 year waranty is very nice.

I love my ps3 but hey i also got a broken 60gb launch unit wich is at sony repaircenter atm, and they only gave me 1 year of waranty, and it was a huge struggle to get my free repair service for it.

The posstive thing at sony is that my repaired unit gets another full 12 month garantie wich ms doesnt do for repaired systems, they dontreset the garanty timer.

My experience with Sony is quite good tbh, my 60 gig stopped reading discs and was replaced for free outside of warranty so can't complain much...my new PS3 also runs a lot quiter which is a nice thing too lol.

The fact that MS give the 3 year warranty for RROD along with the fact the problem isn't as big anymore (I know it does my friend is manager of my local GAME and tells me it's still an issue but also said not as big a problem anymore and thats who I got my 360 from) kinda made the decision to buy one a little easier...the hardwaree issues are trhe main reason I never bought one until now.

How many gamers will convert to another system after their warranty is up? From here on out I'm sure many who have had multiple RROD problems may not want to deal with the 360 hardware issues anymore since it will now cost them money to get it fixed. Also as the amount of 360 true exclusives dwindle and the increased realization that the fee for XBL is unwarranted, should decrease constumer retention numbers and new interests. Pretty sure I will have to disagree with "1 or 2 games", I mean come on... lol, anyway besides that I don't see people ever just leaving there 360, even if it breaks out of warranty.. doesn't make sense... they probably got a lot of games for it, they will just repair it (or in a lot of cases I have seen first hand go buy a new one cause they are to lazy to deal with support).
There best bet would just be to keep the 360, and save up some cash for a ps3 as well, then you don't have to worry about a thing.

the xbox360 launch warranty is up. if you love the 360, do yourself a favor. if your system dies, don't spend money to fix your 360. put that money into a ps3 and buy Killzone 2. lose your defense and watch the video about the leaked bravo killzone special. the game will be very solid. keep your rrod 360 and argue with them, till they repair it for free. if they don't, you've got this truly graphically unique game to play it until they fix agree your 360 to for free. when microsoft's quarterly profit for the console division lowers slightly, let's say 2% percent, they will go back to fixing 360s for free.

So, what you are telling everyone by your logic, is that after 3 years of owning a 360 and having over 20 games, people should go spend $400-$500 and THEN another $60 for a PS3 and Killzone 2. it's ok to jump out and play beyond. i know you guys will miss the 360 but after playing games like KZ2 you might find playing online on 360 a rather dull experience, thanks to the 32 player support and the amazing graphics. and lets not even get to the 60 players supporting game.

I did after 4 dud 360's.

Just put my 360 games up on ebay and sold em all.

I got my ps3 after reading the riot act to Microsoft and got a refund on the 4th dud once they discovered there in house policies can't override a country's consumer laws and have been happy ever since.

The crap conditional policies Microsoft place on retailers in regards to refunds is unmoral and I dare say Illegal after I gave the Microsoft rep the phone number to consumer affairs here in Aus they knew they were screwed.

Funniest thing was the same day I got the refund they send me a email giving me 400 Microsoft points for being a valued customer ....ROFLMAO I replied will they work on my new PS3... heheh never heard back on that one ;)

i switch off from ps2 to original xbox after i got screwed over by sony on some repairs so I i'm not against switching, it just isn't something a person who is not extremely frustrated is going to do

My 3rd console they sent me ended up being a disk gouging unit and wrecked 3 of my games before I figured out anything was wrong. MS tried to refused to take it back because disk scratching wasn't covered under the 3 year warranty, despite the fact this was a replacement unit they just sent me a month before. Thankfully I had shelled out $75 for MS's extended warranty because they wanted $170 cdn to fix it.

Then the unit they sent to me was older than the one it replaced. I stopped playing it for over a year at that point, opting to do the bulk of my gaming on the PS3 instead. I dusted it off for Gears 2 and Fable 2 and now it'll probably sit dormant until (if) Alan Wake comes out later this year. What a nightmare that blasted thing has been.

Well, the best thing that you can do for yourself is buy an extended warranty from Microsoft. Once you get your replacement system you have 90 days to purchase one. They offer 1-year ($29) and 2-year ($59) contracts. I had a launch system and I am currently on my 5th system and second 2-year warranty. But man, the warranty has saved me some serious money. It covers everything on the system not just the RROD. The only thing that sucks is this...they will always replace your system with the EXACT same model. So for me, I keep getting launch systems from 2006! But, still better than shelling out for a new one I guess.

The cost of the launch console, extra controllers, wi-fi, two years of XBL, charge and play kits, more charge and play kits when the batteries died. I was over $800 into my 360 when the blasted thing started failing again and again ang again. After the 2nd RROD I shelled out $75 cdn for the extra 2 year warranty and lucky I did too because of a disk gouging unit that would have cost me $170 to have repaired and wasn't covered under the 1 year warranty.

Of course when I bought my unit, no one had heard of RROD and MS was still sticking to the 3% fail rate lie. I thought the people on the internet forums represented a vocal minority (now every single 360 owner I know personally has had at least one unit die on them). Once I realized how shoddy the hardware was I was already in for $800 plus. At that point do you give up or pony up another $75 so you know you can at least play it for another couple of years so it's not a total waste?

MS duped us, plain and simple. They lied to consumers and tried to cover it up. If I had any idea how bad the hardware problem was I would never have bought one. You can bet I'm watching those lawsuits carefully.

I never tried one myself. I'm on my 4th console and ventilation was never an issue for me, my 360 sat flat on the top of my entertainment unit with a good foot of space around it every way. You shouldn't have to buy extra cooling units for your 360 to function like it's supposed to.

Besides, just about everyone who owned a launch Xbox 360 (Xenon Motherboard) has had their 360 brake on them. They now of the Opus Motherboard (Falcon with no HDMI). For those few unlucky soles, brake your Xbox 360 today and call them up now!

Or, go pay 199 and pick up one of the Arcades with a Jasper board and slap that HDD on top, an inexpensive solution to the problem, at least, for now.

His 360 broke but after watching me get trapped in Microsoft's "Broken Console replaced by patched up Broken Console" cycle he opted to forgoe the warranty and just buy a 360 Arcade and slap his Hdd on it. Someone online bought his rrod console for $100 so it only cost him $100. I asked him why he didn't just get a PS3 like I eventually did and he said he just didn't want to have to scrap the bulk of his games, wi-fi, extra controllers, etc. $100 more seemed better to him than to have to buy everything over again.

I've had 7 360's,6 of them were elites too.I had disk drive problems on all of them,no RROD.I bought myself a PS3 for KZ2 and Blu Ray movies and a back up console incase another 360 broke on me.I found myself playing my PS3 alot more as I didn't expect great games like Uncharted,MGS4,MSPR,ETC.I don't feel paranoid playing my PS3 like I did on 360,come on 7 off them ffs!!!.Well I sold my 360 just before Xmas and I don't miss it at all,I even prefer PSN over Live(less lag).

The mystery behind why people who have consoles die seem to have 3-4 die on them isn't really much of a mystery. Microsoft replaces defective consoles with defective consoles. If you send them you're broken 360 they'll send you back a 360 that's already RROD'd on someone. The last unit they sent me was older than the one it replaced. This rarely has anything to do with the user and everything to do with MS trying to get rid of all the returned 360 units.

I am displeased with MS because when I first play the Xbox 360 Elite, it scracthed my copy of Rock Band. Turn out it was not a good idea to place it verically. Stupid design really. When I broke up with my girlfriend, I haven't touched my xbox ever since. It was her idea to buy the xbox and rockband special edition. I enjoyed it way more than she did. As for my PS3, I haven't touch it much since I bought it at launch 2006. This time it was at a request of a sibling. There was no games to play so it is not touched. More importantly, I must move on with my career and life. As you get older, video games are just a waste of time. And as they say: time is money.

What's the main point? Perhaps majority of gamers here on this site need to set their priorities straight. There's more important things in life than games. If games is relatively high on your list then :Is having fun with your games on top or below of spreading hatred and ill-will? The reason you people are upset is because of your own insecurities in stupid gaming machines. Peace with others is peace within.

What I find funny here is that about 90% of the people who post on here are PS3 owners and not 360 owners! Why is this cause the 360 owners are to busy playing all the great games on the 360 while the PS3 owners played their few and now have nothing else to do! I own both but I use my PS3 only to watch blu-ray since Sony bought out the High Def wars. I had 3 games for my PS3 now they are traded in to buy more 360 titles.The only reason why I am posting here now is I am at work and not at home playing my 360.Also don't forget PS3 lovers there has been alot of PS3 that have been having problems too and trying to deal with Sony is just as bad as dealing with the awful XBL support too.

It was during the 4 months in total that I was without my 360 that I finally started gaming on my PS3 and found out...this is awesome! It's quite liberating not having to game in fear of another rrod. When my 4th 360 console finally came back it was too late. I didn't touch it for over a year until Gears 2 and Fable 2 came out. Now I probably won't touch it till Alan Wake comes out.

If a 360 craps out at this point, a person has a few options if they want next gen gaming to continue:

1. Play their PS3 if they already have one.
2. Spend 400+ on a PS3 because they are pissed at Microsoft.
3. Buy another 360 (maybe an Arcade) as a replacement.
4. Pay the service fee to get the broken 360 fixed.
5. Do nothing.

Stuff break. Some more than others, but it happens, and you have to make the tough choices of what to do about it when things are out of warranty. Right now my PS3's Blu-Ray Drive is on the fritz, and I have to pay almost 150 bucks to get it fixed. That's what happens when you are dealing products like this. Even the most reliable piece of hardware can bite it on anyone at any time.
