Xbox Reportedly Sold Just 2 Million Consoles Last Year

A new report by Take-Two reveals that Xbox has reportedly only managed to roll over 2 million consoles in the last 12 months.

To be fair, Microsoft as a company is going to be fine no matter what they do with the Xbox brand. They now have in place platforms to get their games out and not have to worry about selling few consoles which they already take a loss on each unit sold, so they should just rip off the bandaid and move forward.

What did they expect when the current hardware is NOT the only way to play current gen games? You can play Indiana Jones and Flight Sim on a 2013 XB VCR via xcloud. I didn't think it would work so great but it did... very surprising too with IJ being a 60fps game and all.

So, in all honesty, selling engagement looks to make them more $$ than consoles. And having so many more ways to play makes the need for the current hardware redundant. The younger generations aren't as keen in owning and collecting like older generations... they just want to play the games. It can't get any easier to pick up and play.

And personally.... I'm moving in that direction as well.

Obscure: Thanks for the receipts from half a year ago, but that still isn't saying what you said I said. Middle-line hardware does not equal weak hardware, just not as powerful as PS6. Especially not as weak as the Series S, which is low end hardware. I also didn't mention anything about streaming in that comment you pulled up. I mentioned digital only.

Oh come on now. You know that there´s a GULF between "Not as powerful as the PS6" vs "Slightly more powerful than the Xbox Series X".

We´re talking about next gen here, so a next gen Xbox slightly more powerful than the SX will be as good as what the Xbox Series S is today. A stream machine (or Box) as you describe it:

Obscure, the technical power gain next-gen is going to be much smaller than last to this generation. Much smaller.

The Series S falls behind even the Xbox One X in so many areas (4 tflops vs 6 tflops respectively), and yet it's a later generation console. It's not an improvement on anything but space and CPU. It literally plays Xbox One X games at lower resolution. It's only purpose is to barely play current gen games at low resolution (or even ridiculously lower if it's 60fps) and keep people digital.

Instead of trying to find gatcha moments, try to actually just read and understand what people say. You stopped arguing anything about the article and instead went to the past to find a comment of mine to prove a minor point having nothing to do with the topic at hand, only that I had in fact said something before. It didn't change my argument today, you just had fun talking about something when you couldn't talk about the current topic.

The market for consoles just like games, is completely over saturated.
Too many companies fighting for a limited number of buyers. While ps5 is selling far better than xbox, its also stagnet, sales aren't increasing gen over gen.
This imo is a direct result of younger gamers playing on phones and tablets or whatever device can access the fortnight model of game. Kids n teens are less likely to ask for a console anymore. Console sales have peaked.

If MS would have gone a different route and actually cared about making games 20 years ago, built up studios and offered good games and new IP every gen (not buying multiplat companies) I would still buy Xbox. But they tried to buy it up and hurt the video game industry with their tactics instead.

I would love to buy another console besides PlayStation and Nintendo. I did it with Sega, TurboGrafx16 etc. but the third console days are just about over.

I am not surprised. MS knows how many consoles they have sold. It is one of the reasons why the games are going to every platform with a screen and internet connection.

Xbox is struggling because the migration of exclusives like Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon to PS5, leaving little reason for consumers to choose Xbox and also the problem of series S lacks of power.

It's more to do with generation after generation of poor exclusive output in my view. This generation has been a bit slower for Sony, but generally speaking Sony have pumped out a regular stream of amazing exclusives.

That's part of the story I've definitely noticed the second hand market being flooded with xboxs lately and people are selling them for cents on the dollar.

The migration of games away from the ecosystem from my perspective will hurt new adopters but the increase in gp monthly cost is a huge driver for people to leave the platform many people are starting to wake up to the fact they can buy many of the games they actually play on gamepass cheaply and there's not enough big name titles coming regularly to satisfy people.

The quality of first party titles has also suffered over the last decade from ultra high and well received games like Halo 3 and gears 1 to extremely low rates games like re core gears 4 and halo Infinite haunting them it's just disappointment after disappointment.

I know I mostly left the ecosystem after the Kinect came on the scene I did buy a halo 5 bundle Xbox one eventually and that was a disappointment

I'm not sure if this is still a thing but it used to be a case where retailers in the US and likely other territories required you had a set level of stock in warehouses ready to ship them in the event they sold out but if they don't move the product you give them they send it back for a refund.

Meaning that if Xbox fails to shift it's current retail supply it's facing a staggeringly high loss on console sales over the next two quarters which could seal it's fate unless this changes.

It also explains why stock levels globally have declined so dramatically it's quite difficult to find a retailer with stock in much of Europe and Asia currently. In my region Australia it's definitely declining but still easy to find retail stock in a few outlets.

It's all very well brushing things aside by saying that MS doesn't care about hardware, but rest assured that they absolutely do because they are manufacturing, storing, and transporting these things, all of which is COST, and if nobody's buying them they make a massive loss on all of that.
You can't just brush aside millions of units. Even if you want to dump them in the desert that's a huge amount of additional cost, and loss.

The big question now is ‘at what point would Microsoft consider GP a failure, kill it and pivot over to just being a game publisher?’

If this report is close to being accurate, then why hasn't leadership done anything drastic such as make it possible to launch PC games from the Xbox console. Surely that would give it a second wind and expand the library.

They are doing something drastic, they have become a third party publisher to try to make some money back, there isn't much more they can do, xbox owners aren't buying games and most aren't subbed to gp so they can't make any money off them.
