Killzone 2 Cannot Save The Playstation 3

Analoghype: It's not something new nor is it something surprising at this point in time: The Playstation 3 isn't a console for games to truly shine on. Without trying to stir up a pot of refried beans in the gaming community, I want to stimulate the discussion of an interesting point: Can PS3 users seriously rely on one game to keep their console of choice in the running?

I say this because I have talked with 3 Gamestop stores already and so far, there is no plan for a midnight launch. They all stated, there hasn't been enough pre-orders to have a midnight launch.

I never expected Killzone 2 to "Save" the PS3, but Killzone 2 definantly will create an even greater interest in the PS3 just like how Metal Gear Solid 4 did.

Ever since the PS3 first came out, there's been a lot of people basically just "waiting on the sidelines" or "on the fence" about buying a PS3 and they've been waiting for that certain game to make them justify a PS3 purchase, and Killzone 2 is a game that's going to do it without a doubt.

Like I said, I don't expect KZ2 to "Save" the PS3, but after KZ2 comes out, a lot of people are definantly going to be buying PS3's for it, and once the PS3 gets a price cut, even more people are going to be buying PS3's for Killzone 2.

The thing about the PS3 that makes it so different is that there's TONS of franchises under the Playstation belt and TONS of people are just waiting on certain games to come out before buying a PS3. Some people are waiting for God of War 3 before getting a PS3, then there's some other people that are waiting on KZ2 before getting a PS3... and then there's some other people that may be waiting until Gran Turismo 5 comes out before getting a PS3, etc... None of these games will "Save" the PS3, but they will boost sales and create a greater interest in the PS3 as each game comes out.

The article actually makes sense for what the author is trying to convey but the question is why does the PS3 need saving? It appears to be doing just fine, not as good as Sony expected but good enough IMO. The problem I see with PS3 owners myself included is that the software just isn't selling as impressively as with the 360. If multi-platform then I buy for the xbox and it appears that countless others do as well. Look at the numbers from nearly all games on both consoles and the 360 is selling many times more, millions more in several cases (Bioshock, AC, Oblivion,COD 4/WAW, GTAIV, etc..). Hardware numbers alone do not justify this disparateness. As impressive as KZ2 is shaping up to be, I'd be very surprised if it moves 1 million units in a week yet alone a day. It would be amazing if it sold more than MGS4 during the first week (1.7 million or so) but since that game was actually advertised, I don't see it happening. Regardless the PS3 doesn't need a savior.

My "bs detector" is going a mile a minute with all these "Official Playstation Magazine Poland" reviews -- you know why they get first look reviews? Beyond that, the question "will it save the PS3?" no. I dont think so. The november and december numbers spoke VOLUMES. There is very little hope that KZ2 will sell outside of the existing owner-base, and will probably sell about R2-levels (500k-750k).

KZ1 was abysmal and lack luster. KZ2 looks like it has bene "inspired" by a couple recently popular FPS titles from the leading Next Gen platform.

I just feel very sorry for the members of this board saying "PS3 is doing fine!". PS3 is solidly in 3rd. It is almost *impossible* for a console to have sales declines in November and December. The *same* think happened to Dreamcast.

..that the PS3 is already way past the point of needing to be saved. Consoles like the Dreamcast failed because it only managed to sell around 10 million units total and was so overwhelmed by the PS2 to the point that no one had interest in buying Dreamcast once PS2 launched.

Just because PS3 is 3rd in sales this doesn't mean that it is on the edge of defeat. All 3 consoles have gotten their install base to a number at which they can easily all co-exist. Even if next year 360 has 37 million and PS3 30 million sold, the difference no longer becomes relevant as NO publisher is going to ignore the PS3s install base of 30 million. games journalists, if i can even call them that, need to focus on talking about games and leave the economics to the financial experts because most obviously have no f#@kin clue.

I mostly hear from people who claim the PS3 doesn't need saving and "know" that Killzone 2 "is" awesome based on beta testers' feedback. They spew propaganda like a militant revolutionary. Because they know something on that level is necessary to save the PS3. The game isn't even out yet. Honestly, the beta participants can't be considered unbiased because they got beta access as a "gift" of sorts.

Killzone 2 probably isn't going to be the greatest thing in the world, but there are plenty of people who will "force" it to be great out of pure, unfiltered fanboism. It's also probably not going to outright suck either. But the hype for Haze was roughly equivalent, and every one knows how everyone leaned on that game to be the PS3's savior. And that was at best an average game.

What?, that the same with GeOW. GeOW was never as good as the first Halo experience, and GeOW got treated like a God-idle on its first day. Now, the thing about KillZone2 is that is a war game, and most (if not, all) of XB360 newbies like (love) war based games. So there might be a few (or many) XB360 players that might (will) not miss the experience that KZ2 might (will) bring. Specially if the online multi-player turns out to be good and fun, since it is already FREE.

So that's what I believe. XB360 players will take a closer look at KZ2, play it, and if liked, they'll buy it along with a PS3 (that will be cheaper very soon).

I was one that bough an XBox just to play the first Halo, it was the only XBox title that interested me. I played it for 8 hrs. straight in the first day I saw it on GameStop years ago. But then, that magic just didn't progressed.

But now I'm looking forward to NinjaBlade, that might be my reason to buy an XB360, looks decent in game-play although the developers said that is not going to be hard to beat.

I wholeheartidly agree with the point about marketing games he mentions in the article. A simple 3 second clip of a game won't cut it when it comes to raising awareness for consumers. People know the Ps3 is there, but people don't exactly know about the games it has unless someone with a Ps3 tells them about some games. OF course not. But one must consider its release date.

Pushed back, partly so as to not have two exclusive FPS's battling against one another, Killzone 2's release is very integral.

Sony have no other exclusives which could possibly be released so early in he year. Killzone 2 is going to set the momentum for the year for Sony. I doubt it will be the best or even best selling exclusive on the PS3 this year, but that's not the point.

If Killzone 2 can sell well, and hopefully it will, then Sony are in a good position this year to have their other major exclusives push hardware sales up, because the other exclusives will be sailing on the success of Killzone 2. That seems to be the plan... if Killzone 2 fails in sales then that does not mean the other upcoming games will as well. I'm sure the new Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and GOd of War will see very good sales but its all about momentum: keeping the PS3 hardware sales high for a long period of time instead of though small periods.

halo 1 and 2 kept me playing the old xbox for years. if it was not for that game i would have been a ps2 owner. It's funny to me! Every article that has anything to do with the RROD or the E74 the majority of comments come from PS3 fans. I think this is because the 360 has already shown it's faults but still can sell and come out with kick ass games. PS3 does not need a game to save it, its doing alright. People need to be objective and put everything in perspective. The PS3 doesn't need saving, it needs time for the game developers to figure out exactly how to make a game for it. The tech in the PS3 is different and advanced and it will take some time to figure it out. The only reason some X360 games look better is because its been figured out. Killzone 2 will be amazing, and it will be a PS3 staple, just like Resistance or MGS4. If you want to hate on the PS3, then just don't play it, its that simple. Go back to playing Halo 3 which isn't even that good to begin with.

i have a 360 will one day buy a PS3 when the price comes down. Sony is no.3 and wants to be no. 1. Why is it so damn hard to deal with that. What is wrong with saying and admitting that. The article is stating that this change will not come from Killzone 2 as many PS# fanboys insist, but from the eventual price drop. These are facts people. Why not talk about what you as a consumer want from Sony. People act like the Sony is doing so bad. Its only been two years and its sold more than the xbox in two years. In 08 Sony was outsold by 800,000 systems. I believe Sony will save itself with the price drop and the games coming out this year, but its going to take some time. I personally think Sony is doing fine.

KZ2 is not the only good game coming to the PS3. hell, it's not even my most anticipated game (even though i'm HYPED and it's day 1), that honor goes to Heavy Rain which has the potential to be even more groundbreaking. sure it's not going to sell 10 million copies, but it has a real chance of becoming a classic, a game people will remember a decade from now.. like LBP. and MGS4. as a gamer i enjoy games of that stature. EVEN if the host console could sell better.

As President of Sony Computer Entertainment, I have been working diligently to get the Playstation 3 out of the gutter but so far have yet to find success. I simply charge too much money for the console and my software library cannot stack up to my competitor's quality line up of games on the Microsoft Xbox 360.

In regards to Killzone 2, it saddens me to admit that, no, it cannot save the Playstation 3. Unfortunately, Guerilla Games went way over budget, and under-delivered in both the gameplay and graphics. I will take the blame though. If I were able to acquire a quality developer with a proven track record to make Killzone 2 (Epic Games for example), then it could have truly been a masterpiece that might spark sales for our struggling Playstation brand.

So if a game only sell 1-3mils isn't good enough? it has to reach over 5-10 mils or even more to be call a good game? is that how we decide what game is good what is not now? The fact of the matter is that the PS3 is slowly gaining momentum. The rumored price cut, upcoming triple-A first party releases, the rise-and-rise of Blu-Ray and the (mostly) rock steady reliability of the hardware cannot be argued with. Killzone 2 - a guaranteed system seller - is but one of many feathers that Sony will be sewing into their cap this year. White Knight Chronicles just sold in massive numbers in the land of the rising sun (as it will no doubt do in other territories) and it seems that developers are managing to get increasingly impressive results from the hardware.

These ignorant posts about how much the PS3 is apparently 'suffering' are utter nonsense.

the Playstation 3 does not NEED to rely on ONE GAME, like the Xbox franchise has relied on ONE GAME (now two, counting Gears of War) to get attention for itself.

the Playstation brand is known for more than just 3rd party fair like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, DMC, and GTA.

the Playstation brand is known for titles like God of War, Gran Turismo, Uncharted (new IP, no less classic), Resistance (another new IP, now classic thanks to the wonderful part 2), Motorstorm (new IP, now classic), Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Twisted Metal, their sports titles, etc.

the Playstation brand has ALWAYS had a wide range of titles to choose from, not just one or two that defined the system.

no, Killzone 2 probably WON'T save the Playstation 3, because it doesn't NEED TO.

the big games on the system are doing rather well for themselves. LBP, Resistance 2, Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, have ALL sold over 1 million units WORLDWIDE, and have become, for the Playstation community, NEW CLASSICS that we hope will spawn numerous sequels.

Microsoft is STILL pimping the Halo series, and praying that Epic keeps the Gears franchise exclusive to their box.

most of the titles that DEFINED the 360 since it's start are heading to the PS3 (Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Bisohock, Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect, soon Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean. since Epic owns Gears of War, NOT Microsoft, if they decide to, they will take the franchise to the PS3). but we NEVER hear about that. we never hear about Microsoft's dwindling first party support, while Sony announces new IPs or sequels to classic franchises every other month.

no one ever talks about the fact that Microsoft's 2009 lineup is rather sparse, with games like Halo Wars (MORE Halo! yay...*yawn*), Ninja Blade, Star Ocean IV (i'm really looking forward to this one, by the way), and Alan Wake (ditto on this one too; looks FANTASTIC), being the big titles, while Sony is boasting quite an impressive lineup of heavy hitters, both new IPs and legacy franchises:

Killzone 2 (the series was always solid; Liberation was excellent, and KZ2 has turned the franchise around COMPLETELY)
White Knight Chronicles
inFamous
Fat Princess
EyePet (SOMEONE will like this. more than likely the UK. lol. i kid)
the first of Team Ico's 2 PS3 projects
DC Universe Online (it looks surprisingly solid. i was really impressed by it's potential)
The Agency
Heavy Rain (Indigo Prophecy was excellent. HR will be too)
Ratchet and Clank Future 2 (confirmed by Quest for Booty to be hitting in fall 2009)
Uncharted 2 (most certainly coming this fall. probably November)
God of War 3 (MAY slip to 2010, but they've been working on it since part 2 wrapped)
Gran Turismo 5 (it's more than likely coming this year)

all of those are first and second party titles. ALL exclusive to the PS3, all looking like genuinely enjoyable games. not this nebulous "AAA" moniker that changes it's requirements at a fanboys whim, but genuinely good times, regardless of flaws. like Fable 2 and SOCOM: FUN, fun games, but not perfect by any stretch of the imagine. not "AAA."

there IS such a thing as good games. not everything is so black and white, guys.

it's not just "AAA" game, and "Flop." there are shades in between.

Ninja Gaiden 2 and Folkllore, for example, are not "AAA." they are extremely enjoyable games, however.

the PS3 titles hitting this year simply swamp the 360 titles hitting this year.

and with Microsoft only boasting 7 first and second party developers, and Sony boasting 25 first and second party developers, there's honestly not much Microsoft can have up it's sleeve in terms of new announcements.

i'm not saing they don't have ANY, just that there are more surprises likely from Sony's camp, simply because they have MORE developers working exclusively on their console.

the Playstation 3's "savior" is not just ONE title. it has a strong, quality LIBRARY of games that appeal to more than just us selfish hardcore gamers, and their titles have long legs on the market place.

Ratchet and Clank Future didn't reach 1 million plus people on day one. it reached that number over a PERIOD of time, meaning steady sales YEAR LONG. it wasn't a quick bang of day one sales, then a fizzle.

same thing with games like Uncharted, and even Heavenly Sword (HS has reached over a million units, but the damage was already done by the media, and a genuinely excellent series, brimming with potential, is dead now).

i don't know if many of you haters are simply too young to understand this, or just ignorant and stupid, but it's as clear as day: a console cannot survive by the strength of just one console forever. it NEEDS to grow. even Microsoft knows this, although they need to stop relying on 3rd party devs to supply those new titles, and start building franchises of their own.

if Sony hadn't decided to start investing in more first and second party studios, we wouldn't have franchises like Twisted Metal, God of War, Gran Turismo, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Dark Cloud, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Resistance, Little Big Planet, etc, etc.

and that's a scary thought.

you 360 fanboys love Halo and Gears so much, imagine how many MORE franchises of those caliber Microsoft could produce if they stopped throwing MILLIONS of dollars at things like DLC for games nobody cares about anymore (ie, GTAIV, and Tomb Raider: Underworld).

i'll take a NEW, awesome IP over DLC ANY DAY of the week. it's not a hard choice, really.

WHERE is Microsoft's Killzone 2? where is that game that it built from the GROUND UP with the 360 in mind, that truly pushes the Xenos and Xenon to it's potential?

please don't tell me it's Gears of War 2. i've played that game on a 46" 1080p set (my roommate's), and a 40" 720p set (mine), and the game isn't that impressive.

instead, Microsoft's Killzone 2 has been flushed away for the pursuit of DLC for outdated, unremarkable games.

as a 360 owner also, this upsets me. this concerns me, and it should be a concern for all of you who invested in the 360 this generation also.

Microsoft has been playing it safe THIS ENTIRE GENERATION.

where have they taken risks? LIVE was safe. LIVE was tested on the original Xbox. it WORKS, and it works well.

games like You're in the Movies, Lips, and Viva Pinata are hardly financial risks, and the returns on those games are surely going to be greater than what they put in to develop them.

they played it safe with HDMI, HDDVD, and even software, pushing the titles that they believe appeal to their primary audience (Halo and Gears of War, and other shooters).

NINTENDO have taken more risks than MS this generation, and they've PAID OFF in a big way.

Sony took some risks also. including expensive, unproven tech in their machine, a high price, and truly weak software for the first 6 months of the console's life (excluding Resistance 1, which was GENUINELY GOOD). even their software has been risky, with games like Little Big Planet being rather difficult to market to an older audience.

Blu Ray WON, so that risk paid off for Sony.
including an HDD, HDMI, and Wi Fi out of the box have paid off, because it increases the value proposition to customers over the competition when the price comes down (would you pay $299 for an Xbox 360 Premium with 20 gig HDD, no Wi Fi, no HD movie player, HDMI, and a subscription based online service, or $299 for a Playstation 3 with 80gig HDD, built in Wi Fi, built in HD movie player, HDMI, and FREE online?).

and now, Sony is flexing it's software muscle, which, if you haters had bothered to pay attention to the PS2 last generation, you'd know that Sony has a rather surprising library of classic franchises of its own that can stand toe to toe with even NINTENDO'S first party stable of characters (which lately, have only consisted of Mario, Link, and Samus Aran, unfortunately).

at the end of the day, to US GAMERS, it's the GAMES we care about, and Sony will have them in spades, and the price WILL come down, sooner, rather than later, and millions of Playstation 2 owners will begin to upgrade to the new machine.

it's not sales numbers that dictate the success or failure of a console, but the GAMES.

the Xbox and Gamecube didn't "lose" because they didn't beat the PS2 in sales. they "lost" because they didn't have a large enough library to compete with the PS2.

the 360 has the software library advantage in the BEGINNING, when there was no other console to develop for BUT the 360, but now third party devs are using the PS3 as lead platform, and Sony's own 25 first and second party studios are finally announcing and releasing what they've been working on these past few years.

and Microsoft is aware of this. and they should be very, very nervous. they already lost their hardware lead to the Wii of all consoles. and now they are about to lose their software lead to the Playstation 3. shooters can only do so much. and the MILLIONS of Playstation 2 fans out there looking for a reason to upgrade will need more than just Halo and Gears to sway them.

there are THREE Halo games available on Xbox consoles, and that hasn't swayed them. there are TWO Gears of War games available on the Xbox 360, and that hasn't swayed them. there are JRPGs like Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, and eventually Star Ocean IV, and yet it STILL has not swayed the Playstation 2 owners. the $199 price tag of the 360 has not swayed them.

it's not price holding them back from the 360. it's not even software.

maybe it's brand loyalty. maybe it's trust in Sony and how they've DELIVERED with the PS1, PS2, and PSP, and are on track to deliver with the PS3.

Killzone 2 isn't just a CGI target render anymore. you can cross that off of the "Sony LIES!" list many of you haters have tacked to your walls.

there's something else at work that is keeping those millions of PS2 owners at bay from the 360 beyond just price and software.

yeah, if i was Microsoft, i'd be VERY interested in what that is. and VERY nervous that, after 3 years, going on 4, they STILL haven't figured out what that is.

Ratchet and Clank Future is closing in on 2 million sold
Motorstorm sold 3 million

The PS3 is at over 19 Million units sold worldwide in 2 years.

The Xbox360 is at 28 Million units sold worldwide since its launch in Nov of 2005 = over Three years.

the Xbox360 has an 8 Million lead over the PS3 so far but 5 million of those sales were within the first year of the 360s launch which launched one year before the PS3.

Many video game journalists and GAMERS and even Nintendo themselves would say NO it is not.

In fact Wii sales and pie charts of Wii sales seem to be what Nintendo is currently OBSESSED with instead of putting out good core gamer content that the gamers that have supported them for so long actually want.

I predict that both the PS3 and Xbox360 will have strong showings in both sales and game content within the next 2 to 3 years.

It also stands to reason that the PS3 and Xbox360 will be virtually tied in sales in most regions especially in overall world sales within the next year or two of each consoles repsective sales.

The Wii of course has already won this generation if it is to be considered a competitor to the PS3 and Xbox360 but many GAMERS and video game journalists and even Nintendo themselves would argue that the Wii is not a direct competitor with the PS3 or 360 this in this generation of console gaming for "core" gamers.

One story that is much more relevant and important, and one I am surprised is not on here yet, is that Sony is now reporting a forecasted $2.93 billion loss for the fiscal year, as opposed the $1.12 Billion they originally stated. SCE accounted for $337 Million in losses; seems that its their TV sales that may be suffering the most.

Sony TV's are definitely among the best out there, but are way too expensive to justify it, especially when the no-name TV's look almost nearly as good in HD.

The sad truth is fanboy's from both sides do not see the good they have done for the industry. Halo was a good game and it has made Killzone 2 into an astoundingly good game. Anything that tries to do more than be mediocre has my attention. I love gears of war and Metal Gear Solid. I am a long time halo fan and love resistance 1 and 2. Personally, I have always been a big Sony fan, and will continue to be. I can understand why people are all talking about "saving" the Ps3. The price of the Ps3 was outragous when it first came out, limiting people who bought it, thus limiting people who bought games for this console. but then they praise a game they havent even played. says it all really LOL! got news for you, killflop2 wont even sell a fraction of what GTA, Halo, Gears, Fable or Fallout did. and since gaming is a business and it's all about sales (and not opinions), the ps3 and all of its games are a huge fail.

i should publish a book with comments made by fony girls posting (or rather contradicting themselves) on this site. I mean I know most of you havent been gaming for long and are just brand slaves but still, it's rather entertaining and the only reason i come to this site.

I feel like a p!ss in the ocean writing this comment but here goes,
The last time I heard of a single game having the impact this person expects from KZ2 was back when GTA3 hit the PS2. KZ may look good but it's not the ground breaker people think it'll be. It's not the second coming and it's not GTA3, it's just another shooter with extraordinary graphics! So please, stop looking for failure in the PS3 and just accept that it has a game that's generated a lot of interest which will probably calm down later. The PS3 is doing fine, and shouldn't need to compete in these 'my dad could beat your dad' playground competitions.

KZ2 looks great, and word has it that it plays great to. Fantastic, that's good news - if it is the case I'll pick it up after trying the demo.

But Killzone is not a well known IP outside of the hardcore gamer. Also GG have not exactly sparkled with it's previous titles.

I know quite a few PS3 owners who love FPS games, especially the CoD series, but are not 'hardcore' gamers at all. They are vaguely aware of KZ2, but don't have any plans to pick it up yet.

Perhaps that's Sony's fault for not advertising it more - but then again why should someone jump in to KZ2 when KZ1 was not great?

I actually think it's a sign of how confident Sony are in the long term strategy and success of the PS3 that they are not crazily hyping KZ2 themselves. They seem almost blasé about it!

EDIT: And I'd much rather Sony invest their money in to more great titles than spending it on massive marketing campaigns. MS spent 30million on Halo 3 campign. Add that to the 50million they paid for GTAIV DLC, and that's a lot of money that could have gone towards making 2008 a much better year for 360 games, and 2009 not look so dry!!

Sorry but if MGS4 can't do it, what chance does an inferior Franchise, a shooter, non Holiday release is going to do for the PS3? It will probably sell a few consoles and sell like the PS3 version of COD WAW at most.

The only thing that can save Sony is for them to re-release the PS3 with a DVD drive, pack in a wiimote ripoff, and sell it for $199.99.

Let me be blunt. I agree with you, KZ2 isn't going to storm the Microsoft gates, kill their men and take their women. I think Killzone 2 will probably sell on par if not slightly better than Resistance 2, which is a fantastic game. Generally speaking, PS3 owners don't line up to buy games and they don't need to have the hottest games, day one. When you look at PS3 games sales they usually sell a bit more on the first and second week but generally just sell steady.
It happened with COD4, it happened with LBP, it's happening with Resistance 2, Motorstorm, Bioshock, etc...etc. Killzone 2 will be no different.

Is this a problem and does the PS3 need saving? Of course not. When EA comes forth and reveals that PS3 games generate on average 40% more than 360 games, and when the PS3 moves 17 million consoles in 2 years (the 360 could only move 13 million in it's first 2 years) it's pretty clear to me that there's nothing wrong with the PS3 sales. They're hitting targets, developers are making money, production costs are coming down faster than expected....end of storey.
