Maybe but even though it would never have been as bad as Concord, they do have the Marvel IP backing it with multiple fan favourite characters in the spotlight. Could they have really done as well standing out and keeping interest in a now oversaturated market if it was an original IP.

Tacoboto142d ago

No. And they kind of acknowledge exactly that.

"I think the trick is that you need to have that reason that people want to come and play your game and I think Marvel Rivals does that exactly with the superhero"

That's a question they'll never have to consider or think about. They just need to focus on doing the characters well, making them fun, and keeping players happy by ensuring the former.

Rangerman1208142d ago

Honestly, a hero shooter with heavy retro-futurism aesthetics doesn't too bad. The problem is that the art direction doesn't lean much on thata spect so it just look like (for the most part) another generic modern scifi setting. That, and the gameplay wise, it barely stands out much besides being the only hero shooter to not have ULTs. Yeah, there ar ethe variants but those feel more like a complicated intergrated verison of Paladins' talent system. That one mode where you're practically forced to pick a new character when you win the round isn't acrually that bad as it reinforces the whole "crewbuilding". The problem is that it was the least played mode out of the bunch unfortunately.

MrGameAndWatch142d ago

So unique value means cloning famous pvp FPS ?

jambola142d ago

lol
i like the game a lot in my few games
but i definitely had a few moments of "that's literally Pharah" or thinking I literally saw Sombra running around lol

SoloGamer1141d ago

exactly.. it just Overwatch with Marvel heroes..

Psychonaut85142d ago

Little early to be calling Rivals a success. I guess that bar has lowered and not immediately tanking inside a week is a success now.

RiseNShine142d ago (Edited 142d ago )

Concord had a max player count of 694 people on Steam, Marvel Rivals is at 500k players, and moves around 450-480k these days, if for you having half a million people (only on Steam) playing your game is not successful, you really should re-check your definition of success.

MrGameAndWatch142d ago

And you're comparing a 50$ game to a F2P..

TheNamelessOne142d ago

@MrGame

Sony doesn't seem to be even thinking about a free-to-play relaunch of Conord, which says a lot.

VenomUK142d ago

@MrGameAndWatch Concord was a failure- true. But @RiseNShine is absolutely right that it is premature to be declaring Marvel Rivals a success after just five days. Even if it had a high player count, that could just be from players eager to give it a try. XDefiant is being shut down and maybe that had good launch - but it’s the longer term player base that determines its success.

SoloZelot90141d ago

10million players says success.

IAMRealHooman142d ago

none of the characters in concord were attractive enough to get R34'd.
I'm serious Overwatch is popular because of it's pron, and marvel rivals female design is appealing for the same reason.
Look at the gacha games that make bank ( genshin, zzz, nikke) , its the hot females that sell.

Army_of_Darkness142d ago

Nobody wants to play/or see ugly character in a fictional world. Especially these Man-ish looking chicks.

IAMRealHooman142d ago

even the "fat" character squirrel girl is aesthetically plump like mei from OW, instead of obese, like the weird medic from concord.

Notellin142d ago

Yeah if I want to see manly and burly women I can just go to Whole Foods or Target. There is no need for video games to experience that phenomenon.

Moe-Gunz142d ago

Having the marvel IP helps a ton. I find the game to be weak tbh.

RiseNShine142d ago

That can be the only reason, Marvel Avengers failed miserably, just like Suicide Squad or Gotham Knights on DC side, so having Marvel characters is far from being enough for a game to succeed nowadays.

jambola142d ago

Yeah but it obviously helps get some attention and fanbase

Moe-Gunz142d ago (Edited 142d ago )

I said it helped. I didn’t say it was the only reason. I think the FTP model, Marvel, and the fact that it is a familiar type of game all play a role. However, if the Marvel IP wasn’t attached I think it would’ve had a very hard time.

Concord was burned at the stake before it was even released.

As someone who travels for work I still care about portable systems.

I have found using remote play in a hotel room is an excellent experience in a major city as I've got my console hard wired to a gigabit connection at home however it's not perfect if power trips the console tends to go to the repair section and can't be booted remotely so it's a annoying call to family to power it on for me.

A hotel out of town or regionally though that can cause havok for remote play as I'm always on 5g using it hotel wifi is never good enough for a solid remote play session.

But leaving a stable location and getting onto a plane or train and there's little to no chance of a good experience with remote play thats where something like the switch 2 will really shine for me personally long haul flights are exhausting and one of my most hated things the switch has been invaluable for me and I'll absolutely be upgrading

Goodguy013d ago

Nintendo has always done it the best, handheld is in their genes. I do wish their dock could be like an egpu though and it make it much more powerful, it's a bit harder for me to play portable now for some odd reason, love just sitting on the couch with a big screen and controller. And ofc always great to have the portable option and for me it's best for smaller games.

jznrpg3d ago

I was hoping for a little more than 540p upscaled

UltimateOwnage3d ago

IMO, 540P upscaled in portable mode to a 1080P screen using DLSS on the tensor cores will likely extend battery life using a lower TDP and provide much better anti-aliasing and similar clarity compared to native 1080P with med/low AA at a higher TDP. It’s just a better way to use a mobile chipset. That’s not a flaw or weakness, it’s a key benefit for the portable design of the platform.

repsahj2d ago

Lol, even the impressive upscaling feature of Switch 2 can now spin to a negative one.

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Switch 1 was hitting 720p and above that with no upscale, so why can’t they have a higher res and upscale it more

repsahj2d ago

@jznrpg
Because of that even the current gen games will now run on switch 2 that looked as good and with decent framerate as the current gen consoles.

Do you watch Nintendo's hands on preview for switch 2? LOL.

badz1492d ago

because aside from Nintendo's own games which have their dedicated fanbase, portability is the only other thing it has going for it. Nintendo will be eliminated faster than xbox if they ever decide to do a dedicated home console again. going the hybrid way is the only way left for them and they are lucky they dominated the portable market all those years ago. imagine the power of the Switch 2 as a console this day and age with the same price as PS5. they will be the laughing stock of the market.

I do appreciate the changes to the levelling system in the remaster which lessens the hassle of min/max with regards to effects class skills have on attributes(missed these in Skyrim).

The level scaling is still a problem though as you end up with crappy uniques if you find them low level. They did fix this with regards to items from one of the DLCs but it should be across the board.

anast3d ago

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Michiel19893d ago

funny that you say that. That would make you the Titanic since you're having a crashout over this game performing well.

anast3d ago

strange comment...Maybe it's the way you write or your intentions or something, but most of the time I don't understand your comments

attilayavuzer3d ago

It's not healthy to be this upset at people having fun.

arissaseah512d ago

The changes are good as they did some enhancements. I like it.
