Dragon Age: The Veilguard (XS) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "Dragon Age: The Veilguard may be one of the toughest games to formally review. Yes, it deserves fair consideration for a big-budget action-RPG, published by EA no less, that's functional by definition. While not polished to a mirror sheen, there's something to be said of such a massive experience being technically sound at release. The question is: how much can that count against a game that feels so – dare I say – spiritually empty? Whether it's the aesthetics, music, narrative, or gameplay, each fundamental aspect feels inauthentic to various degrees. You're being sold a high-fantasy RPG adventure in which the combat is lobotomized, most of your decisions are of no consequence, the tone has no consistency, and the world feels shallow. Accounting for those faults, perhaps Bioware's greatest offense is also its most ironic: making a Dragon Age game that feels pathetically toothless."

Overly positive = paid shill
Overly negative = clickbait

Like clockwork.

jambola174d ago

yep
if it's above 7 the haters come to discredit
under 5, the fans
insane lol

CrimsonWing69174d ago

So which is the right one? Whatever one you want to go with?

coolbeans174d ago

@CrimsonWing69

You're misunderstanding the point of my comment.

Redemption-64174d ago

Most gamers are not smart enough to think for them and need reviews that fit their narrative. People only use skill up because he is saying what they want to hear. It's entertaining seeing fully grown men depending on the opinions of another person to tell them what games to play

lex-1020174d ago

"People only use skill up because he is saying what they want to hear."

Or perhaps its because SkillUp provided plenty of video evidence to support his opinions and because Skillup's opinions have typically aligned well with my own.

Redemption-64174d ago

And when his opinions don't match your own then what? People who depend on reviews only use reviews that fit the narrative they want to hear. I have also seen people turn on Skill up in the past, called him woke, or shill when he likes a game they didn't. At the end of the it's an opinion, and many gamers are not smart enough to make their own opinions. Kind of sad, but very entertaining watching grown men telling them which games they should play.

coolbeans174d ago

@Redemption-64

-"And when his opinions don't match your own then what?"

I don't get why you're framing 'most gamers,' as an already ill-defined collective, as having an all-or-nothing approach to another's opinions. I think most people can recognize that no person is going to uniformly line up with their own tastes. Personally, I think somebody *trusting* another critic is less so determined by feeding their personal narrative and more so about consistency and clarity.

-" Kind of sad, but very entertaining watching grown men telling them which games they should play."

I mean... the vast majority of us are living on borrowed time and limited funds. Having people share their thoughts on what creative works are *worth* spending both on is a perfectly reasonable thing to expect. Hopefully said critique is also heard and internalized by creatives to hone in and improve their own future projects as well.

Redemption-64174d ago

@coolbeans

Creative work is subjective, if you need the opinion of another person to tell you what is worth it, more power to you. Outside of knowing if a game has bugs, glitches or bad performance, what a person thinks about creativity is purely subjective.

But hey I get it, some people just need another person to tell what to play. Good for them

SoloZelot90174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

And yet here you are...I'm sure you purchase every game in existence within genres that interest you without looking at a single review...what nonsense.

Unlike you there are tons of dragon age fans that wanted this game to be good...we just don't like lying to ourselves and pretending shit is chocolate cake.

Creative work is subjective...in terms of a flat 1 dimensional output such as a piece of graphic design.

We are talking about games that can be critiqued in a large variety of ways objectively and some ways subjectively. After all the creation of a game is not just creative it's also technical. And not just in terms of bugs and glitches.

The people that claim everything is subjective are just trying to avoid the possibility of making people feel dumb about their own takes. It a type of agree to disagree scenario which takes the conversation nowhere.

B movies for instance are horrible. And some people like that. But just cuz you like it that doesn't make it a good movie.

-Foxtrot174d ago

"Most gamers are not smart enough"

Which is ironic because the game treats you like an idiot.

lex-1020173d ago

@Redemtion64.

There have been plenty of games he's reviewed that I disagree with.

I'm not sure what your argument is here? That people should never seek others opinions and instead buy everything blindly and hope for the best?

Armaggedon173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

@solozealot

I have already, many times in fact, got people to almost literally admit that certain games they would give as an example of objectively good game design, possess the literal same elements fundamentally as a game they would crap on. It is subjective, as if we look at it at a fundamental level, it is much harder than one would think to say what game is “good” vs what game is “bad”. These people that claim a game is “objectively “ bad dont see beyond a superficial level. They almost always go by how they feel playing the game, as your experience playing something is all on you…the player.

@redemption-64

This is true. I have learned enough in my time in this life to understand that if normie/stimulation junky players say something is good…I stay away 90% of the time, and it saves me money. And when they say something is bad, or “poorly” designed, I buy that crap immediately most of the time.

Sleep myth wukong: put me to sleep teice and uninstalled by desert area. Witcher 3: forced myself to finish. Elden ring: The main draw of the game is disrespectfully shallow and pointless outside of creating the illusion that someone accomplished something.

coolbeans173d ago

@Redemption-64

It's like you're shadow-boxing. Of course game opinions are inherently subjective (outside technical bits). I figured that was implicitly understood with my previous point.

-"if you need the opinion of another person to tell you what is worth it, more power to you."

I'm just not sure where you're going with this. I mean... I'm in partial agreement about liking to roll the dice on a new game purchase with little prior knowledge solely because it intrigues me. But to hand-wave away gamers - and consumers - who want more intel before making a steep investment is rather strange. Plus, it goes beyond that too. I think the social interaction of fans and detractors over any media makes for lively discussion.

Redemption-64167d ago

@coolbeans

😂🤣😂, whatever makes you sleep at night. Some people just can't think for themselves and need the opinion of others to tell them what to play.

When it comes to games like Dragon Age I trust SkillUp & Angry Joe. After watching their reviews (Angry Joe’s is very funny) as well as others, I’m not getting the game any time soon…

Profchaos174d ago

I kind of disagree that angry Joe is actually funny seems like he's just trying to take the avgn formula and apply it to modern games but the jokes don't land as well

Otherwise yeah I agree with the sentiment

Armaggedon174d ago

Joe doesnt want to piss off his viewers. His honest score would be 5-6/10.

victorMaje174d ago

Yeah he’s not always funny but some moments in this review I laughed hard thanks to Other Joe.

-Foxtrot174d ago

The thing about Joe, funny or not, he goes into why he thinks something sucks, it's not just "I hate this, here's the score, peace out". Some videos can go on for like 40 minutes or so.

Also I kind of like some of Alex's takes, he's pretty realistic with most things and take things how they are.

I don't agree with them all the time but I think it's a night and day difference to the Angry Joe who first started a decade or so ago.

BeRich233174d ago

Angry joes score is bs, if the game was really a 3 of 10 then he'd be done playing it within the first hour. I am 14 hours in and the game is pretty good so far, haven't fallen a sleep while playing this one. Form your own opinion by actually playing it someday.

victorMaje174d ago

For now my opinion is I’ll wait for a discount based on what I’ve seen & other people I trust playing it.
I will play it some day, and I’ll let you know :) for now I’ll trust my gut and give my time to other games.

lex-1020174d ago

"Form your own opinion by actually playing it someday."

When games are $70+ I'd rather not risk buying a game I don't like so I can "form an opinion."

-Foxtrot174d ago

But if he didn't play it for more than 3 hours then you'd be complaining he's hardly played it and his opinion on the game means f*** all. Can't win.

Armaggedon174d ago

Angry joe was being hyper biased. His score is disrespectful

Gamingsince1981173d ago

The game disrespected my time, its pure trash.

Armaggedon173d ago

Gsmingsince1981 play games that dont fit you. I could say wukong is pure trash… but I know better

coolbeans174d ago

Alright. What would you give it?

Elda174d ago

I'm playing it & I'm enjoying the game. It's definitely not a 4 out 10, a 4 out of 10 would be a broken mess something the game is not.

CrimsonWing69174d ago

Honestly, it’s an 8 for me.

174d ago Replies(1)
coolbeans174d ago

Fair enough. Glad you're enjoying, but I do want to make one important correction. A 4/10 on VGChartz doesn't translate to a broken mess, as you put it. Here's from the site's methodology:

"4 / 4.5 - Poor
Before investing in these sub-par games, think twice. They get a few things right, but too many obvious problems make them difficult to recommend."

I think it's important to understand the score within this context.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was never going to be one of those games that gets "fixed" with updates, but DLC could've let the devs tell their own story.

I know everyone hates this game, but I have had a blast with it. I enjoyed the combat, characters (for the most part), and the story. Not to mention the environments are beautiful. I like this game more than dragon age 2 or inquisition.

raWfodog37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

I’m still playing through Inquisition now but will hop into Veilguard after that. I was surprised when it was added to PS+ Essentials last month. I’ll see for myself if it deserves all the hate or not.

Lexreborn237d ago

The best thing about options and people is. Things are allowed to cater to others and they enjoy it, and it’s equally okay if you don’t individually vibe with something.

What’s not okay is over criticizing something due to your personal bias and agendas. Campaigning against harmless things that don’t truly dictate anything in your life. I’m not into dragon age games, but I never once made an agenda to tell people how “bad” each iteration is because it didn’t click for me.

This game deserves nothing more than to be buried in the annals of history, only to resurface decades later as a cautionary tale of the astonishing foolishness that prevailed in 2024.

GhostScholar37d ago

You must have not played a truly bad game I’d you think this is a bad game.

Snookies1237d ago

This game was a mockery to the Dragon Age series. I lost all faith in the series thanks to this one.

GhostScholar37d ago

I can see not liking the change in combat but that’s about the only criticism I could give it and I actually had a blast as a veil jumper archer. To each his own I’m not saying it’s the greatest game ever but it’s my favorite dragon age game since origins

TheColbertinator37d ago

That's what people say about every new Dragon Age game. Many fans almost gave up on the series after Dragon Age 2. Even more stopped caring for Inquisition because despite the high reviews, fans of the original Bioware hated the gameplay. Some players never even left the first area "The Hinterlands".

Asterphoenix37d ago

Lots of the main Bioware team is gone from years ago. The site is silly if they want to fix it they would have to re-do everything.

They might as well make a new entry. They should take fan feedback rather than ignoring them to push an agenda.

Definitely didn't feel like a Dragon Age game.

GhostScholar36d ago

I just don’t get that critique. Graphics were great, characters were great, story was great, and I liked the combat as well. Like I said to each his own. It sucks for the people who didn’t like it, but I really enjoyed it.

PanicMechanic36d ago

Characters and story were sure as hell not great at all.

Rancegamerx36d ago

The characters were great? In what universe? They were thinly disguised activists shoehorned into a fantasy setting, prioritizing forced ideology over genuine storytelling. Calling them "great' is an insult to the art of character creation. They lacked depth, relatability, and purpose—a mess that even garbage would resent being compared to.

The DLC was supposed to feature a blond haired dude, with orange skin, that bans all woke nonsense from the game.

BioWare Co-Founder Praises Dragon Age Veilguard, Says Long Gaps Between Games Raise Fan Expectations

Bioware co-founder Greg Zeshuck has praised Dragon Age: The Veilguard, saying that lengthy gaps between game releases raise fan expectations.

Redgrave89d ago

Long gaps to an extent, but too long and you enter into impossible expectations and loss of interest. The balance is hard to allow for adequate development time and avoid over inflation of the product, but such a thing aa too long is absolutely a thing.

Dragon Age Veilguard I think was too long, especially after what we ended up getting. Mass Effect 5, if not canceled, will likely suffer a similar fate.

NoDamage89d ago

No it does not. There were no expectations for this game since pretty much nothing was ever really shown to increase hype....the only hype for this game was self generated because of the love of the franchise. It was nothing extreme...and yet they still failed.

There was more hype for anthem then for this game.

goken89d ago

The Self delusion is strong with this one…

-Foxtrot89d ago

Who raised their expectations? People have been iffy with new BioWare games in general since they screwed up the ending of ME3 and they just got lower until Anthem really put us all on a downer

The fact it was so low and still got people disappointed showed you how bad this was.

I’m sorry but simply put he’s talking s***

TheColbertinator88d ago (Edited 88d ago )

The gap between Veilguard and Inquisition was an issue of course but the pressing problem was the lack of confidence towards Bioware after Andromeda and Anthem. These two games were to be pillars of Bioware's continued dominance in the RPG market. In the days since other RPG developers have come to take the center stage and push out Bioware. Obsidian, Bethesda, CDPR and Larian are among the many developers who have staked their claim since DA Inquisition launched.

I was happy with the last two PS+ Essential Game Lineups too, but this one is a ton cooler. Owned TMNT Collection on PC already, but will most likely play it again on the bigger screen.

Is Dragon Age The Veilguard worth the time it probably needs? Liked the previous games of the series a lot.

pwnmaster300090d ago (Edited 90d ago )

I mean no harm in trying.
I’m glad it is because I was just gonna buy it.
I usually just grab any monthly game.
I have so much games that I’ve never played sitting in my library because of the monthly games lol. Do they have an expiration?

Popsicle90d ago

So long as you stay subscribed they stay in your library.

Terry_B90d ago

Only if you unsubscribe to ps+..but even if you make a subscription pause of years, they would be back if you subscribe again with the same PSN account ^^

Back in August '24 I started the crazy quest to try and beat as many of the ..around 350 PS4+PS5 ps+ games I have + a few bought one sin physical form ..since I started subscribing back in 2013 already. From A-Z.

Played through a weird game named 2064 Read Only Memories..had a lot of fun and almost tears with the damn awesome 2 "A Plague Tale" games, enjoyed Alan Wake, Aliens Fireteam Squad or what its called and a couple more games started with A.

When I was at the standalone dlc for Assassins creed IV Black Flag I bought that friggin whole game and beat it because I liked the dlc.

Now in february 2025 I am still at fucking letter B because I also bought Barman Arkham Collection and just beat Arkham City, Getting the time for all these games that are good and come for such a small price is more soulslike than anything from FromSoftware.

Lets see if I make it to Letter D by the end of the year >:I

Eonjay89d ago

This really feel like good value for the plus sub. Can't wait to give DA and Sonic a try. Already have TMNT

Jingsing87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

@Terry_B How is PS+ good value if for example I haven't been subscribed for 5 years, Then 5 years later I want to play a game I got on the service. I have to pay $100 or more whatever the price will be in the future, almost certainly higher. That isn't value at all having to pay a high access fee for an old 10 year old game. Nothing about game subscriptions make financial sense unless you can keep them in your library without having to constantly pay for it. That is how they make the money and you ultimately lose as a consumer.

Dragon Age has a fun combat system that offers good challenge on the higher difficulty (haven't tried normal).

I'm about 10-12 hours in, on PC where it runs so well, and just got Lucanis in my party. Graphics are nice, audio is good, quality of voice actors is also good.

The only problem at this point is there are signs of overly-positive writing and one character I've complained about before that is especially annoying.

I haven't played more because of other games, not because it isn't fun or the writing is *that* off-putting.

Maybe as I play more I'll like it less, but for now, I know enough about the tone of the writing that I can brush that aside and enjoy a fun game with acting that's still good despite some of what they're given - the core of what's been about the story is written better than when it's about or involving that specific irritating character.

VenomUK90d ago

For Dragon Age: The Veilguard to be included in PS Plus so soon after release just goes to show how far EA/Bioware shit the bed.

thorstein90d ago

I'd place it just below Inquisition. There are parts that I really enjoyed getting into the backstory about, especially the infractions with Solas. Luckily there are many companions and you can usually pick who you want with you.

The character stories are decent, with some being quite enjoyable.

nitus1089d ago

I spent a few hours on Inquisition and while I think the gameplay was fine I just lost interest. Of course I did have Dark Souls 2, 3, Bloodborne and a suite of RPG's that I also wanted to play at the time.

Oh well I will bookmark all the games in case I eventually wish to play them.

Luc2089d ago

Playing all these games sounds like a full time job! No doubt you'll come across a gem once in a while.

Abear2189d ago

If it wasn’t for GT7 I’d probably finish more games. Want TMNT just for the nostalgia high and will play it some, but backlog be damned!

I’m only adding must play games to the pile bc I’m already a year behind haven’t started RE4 yet or Alan Wake 2, hopefully news of GTA6 or RDR2 remaster happens by the time I finish them. Probably finish Skyrim before I play Veilguard.

Daeloki89d ago

Veilguard is fun to a degree, but sadly falls a bit short from its predecessors. I bought it at release because I was excited to have it, but sadly I was a bit blinded to actual valid criticism by all the typical loud anti-woke rantings. As in, by the time I wanted to check reviews, all you could really see was grown white men crying about pronouns and other optional character features, and all actual criticism was kinda drowned out.

That said, I think the gameplay is fun, although it can get a bit repetitive. It looks stunning in my opinnion, but the writing isn't very deep. Everyone gets along a bit too well, there is no real friction or risk of uppsetting your companions. Visually it's very pleasing, spells and abilities are flashy and cool, and combat is very fluid and dynamic. The companions had initially interesting storylines, but they kinda fell short despite the potential.

Much better graphics, better controls, more languages, a new game mode even some decently remixed music tracks

DoubleYourDose90d ago

Definitely better for a late night snack.

Profchaos89d ago

Yeah same I struggled with the Wii version back in the day because it ran terrible so I'm excited to play this

Cockney89d ago

Someone told me at breakfast the game was a bit on the woke side, I won't download it till after dinner, maybe ill hear different by then

thorstein89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

A companion has an optional storyline about their gender. If you choose to go through that particular companion storyline, you can button beat the dialog and avoid it.

That stuff doesn't bother me at all, but I found that character annoying anyway.

Wow, pretty amazing as Veilguard just came out in October. Opinions have been pretty mixed, but I'll happily try it out for free. I loved Inquisition, but I know to keep my expectations lower for this one.

As for TMNT collection, I had bought for Switch a long while back so i could have it for portable play. I'm really happy to get it again on PS5 for trophies.

crazyCoconuts90d ago

Yeah highly unusual to have it Veilguard on PS+ so soon! Don't know if that's a statement of how great PS+ is, how poorly Veilguard did, or a combination of both.

raWfodog89d ago

Yup, get to try it out for myself sooner rather than later without having to 'buy' it. It's really telling that this next DA game has been shifted to PS Plus so soon after its release but I'm still willing to give it a go after the lackluster reviews.
