The First-Person Perspective Is Really Hurting Indiana Jones And The Great Circle

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle feel highly promising from the environments, story sections, and dialogues. However, the first-person perspective for an iconic face like Indy is still off-putting.

i think so too, its an odd decision for an action game essentially. or franchise

-Foxtrot152d ago

Comes across as "We were given Indiana Jones but since we have no experience of third person we just went along with First person"

Microsoft should have given Indiana to someone else and let these guys do a Quake reboot or something.

TheColbertinator152d ago

And give Fallout to Obsidian. We scream but nobody listens.

Zeref151d ago

Why would they make another Uncharted when Uncharted is right there?

-Foxtrot151d ago

Well…

1) Doesn't have to be like Uncharted just because it’s third person. Indiana would have more focus on puzzles than combat.

2) Uncharted has been out of action for years now, this would have been the perfect time…

KyRo152d ago

It feels like studios live in a little bubble and ignore everything around them that isn't the game they're making. The Avatar game was okay but would have been much better as a third person game too.

RaidenBlack151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

The very studio or rather specifically the studio's devs created the iconic Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butchers Bay,
A critically acclaimed game that features the similar third-first person hybrid structure from 2004! You don't get to see the iconic Riddick/Vin Diesel's face while you play.
So no, the devs aren't living in a bubble but rather followed their tradition.
If they wanted to make another Uncharted/Tomb Raider clone ... they could've but they didn't.
But alas, modern journalism and these articles ... will force everything to a certain structure and just for sake of clicks will always doubt experimentations.
Its articles like these that sometimes changes views, results in poor sales, impacts studio's future creativity and forces them to take less risks in future.

Reaper22_152d ago

It's not an odd decision. Not everyone games has to be like uncharted or Tomb Raider.

gold_drake152d ago

true agreed.

but both uncharted and tomb raider are essentially inspired by it.

also, just by default, Indiana Jones is a journey/exploration of myths, legends and treasures.

doesnt quite translate to first person now does it.

goken151d ago

While correct not every game needs to be uncharted or tomb raider.
But when you have an iconic character it would be nice to actually see him/her while you play.
Imagine if Arkham series and spiderman decided to go with first person, people would go WTF

TricksterArrow151d ago

Being third person is not what defines Uncharted and Tomb Raider. Not any other game for that matter. A game can be third person and still have its particularities. Might as well say that “Indiana Jones is not Mirror’s Edge and Resident Evil 7, why is it in First Person”. If they changed the perspective to avoid association with other popular titles, it’s a sign that there is not enough there to tell this title apart in the first place… which is a much deeper problem.

darthv72152d ago

It worked just fine for Chronicles of Riddick... why not here?

lelo2play151d ago

"The First-Person Perspective Is Really Hurting Indiana Jones And The Great Circle"

Everybody said the same thing about Cyberpunk 2077, and yet...

gold_drake151d ago

i wouldnt compare those two games, but ok.

mkis007151d ago

Indiana jones won't be using his gun very much (idk if he even can outside of specific moments). Cyberpunk is an fps. It seems to be have a lot of platforming, which is better in 3rd person.

I didn't realize the game was out and people said they weren't buying it because of 1st person.

MaximusPrime_152d ago

This is why I found tech4gamers the worst source for news and opinion pieces.

RaidenBlack151d ago

The article quality itself so poor ... "I enjoyed the hell outta uncharted coz I could see his face while I play ... why can't it be same for this game?"

Inverno152d ago

There's gameplay and people are expressing their opinions based off what they've seen. Crazy I know.

Michiel1989151d ago

come on now, everyone on the internet is an internal beta tester, you shoulda known this.

lukasmain152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

You'll get used to it. Plus it's got cut-scenes so I'm sure you'll see heaps of Indy to keep you immersed. It doesn't really matter that it's 1st person, what matters is if the story hits and I'm sure it'll be fine. Personally, yeah, I would have preferred 3rd person, but 1st person isn't the end of the world, as I said, you'll get used to it.

anast152d ago

I don't like it being FP, but I'm going to play it any way too.

RaidenBlack151d ago

Its not only just cutscenes ... other movements like mantling and ziplining are all third person based ... the hate doesn't come just from gameplay ... it primarily coz of the publisher.
And I'd say the discussion here is still civil compared to the first gameplay reveal N4G article, when the PS5 launch wasn't mentioned.

lukasmain151d ago

"PS5 Launch wasn't mentioned"

Or it could be because lots of previews have come out already and we know a hell of a lot more about the game and how it plays. I was super skeptical a the start, and it wasn't because it wasn't going to playstation. Honestly, but when the previews came in, my view of the game and gameplay were much more positive. I could imagine how it would play.

GotGame818152d ago

To me it's not a big deal. It would be nice to have a toggle option. Honestly I wish more games did. Some people just make issues out of nothing though. I mean I play all kinds of first Person games, and if the gameplay vibes it vibes.

Hofstaderman152d ago

Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided did it right.

TheColbertinator152d ago

Deux Ex in general always did first person well in its time. Even Invisible War was a good first person interactive game even though it wasn't a good FPS.

spicelicka151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

I think it's also important to understand that a toggle option isn't as simple as people think. Some games are very intimate and unless it's factored into the game design, the camera getting pushed behind could cause the game to be glitchy.

This is why games like COD have it on multiplayer only, because the scripted elements of the campaign don't automatically adjust to third person.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle Feels Perfect on the PS5

If you didn’t catch Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at the end of last year on an Xbox Series X or PC, the PS5 version is worth it.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5: excellent game, solid port

The PS5 and PS5 Pro ports of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle lack much in the way of new features - but the game is still golden.

Hope there is a sequel planned. This game is better than expected.

gigoran83d ago

Port? I mean, it's a multi-console game that was just delayed for one of the consoles. If the next COD was a timed exclusive you wouldn't call it a port would you?

coolbeans3d ago

"Port" has been casually used like DF is doing here for some time. It's pretty innocuous, even if doing a 'port job' from PC/Xbox architecture to PlayStation architecture isn't the arduous task it used to be. Just take the title for what it is: MachineGames didn't rush to get this version out (according to DF).

VenomUK2d ago

I don’t think we need to get too pedantic about the use of the word port, the word itself is not a pejorative, it’s a bad port that is deserving of criticism. If a game is released on a platform after the release on other platforms, and was not developed in tandem with them, then it’s a port.

PRIMORDUS3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

This was my personal GOTY on PC. I wish more game companies would use ID Tech 7 or 8 for their games and just abandon Unreal Engine 5 and any future ones from Epic.

Flewid6382d ago

If there was a third person option I would've definitely bought it.

MIDGETonSTILTS172d ago

You’re missing out. The 1st person perspective is better suited for exploring the detailed environments, and helps you get the best view possible of the puzzles..

Flewid6382d ago

Yeah but missing out is a better experience than not having fun.

Indiana Jones And The Great Circle PS5 Pro Review – A Graphical Showpiece - Press Start

Press Start: "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle delivers both high calibre adventure, story and performance in spades, to the point it feels as though it’s wading into “uncharted territory” for its publisher. The decision to bop a Nazi should be a foregone conclusion, however the lack of balance in stealth and combat systems kept me in limbo, and left Indiana Jones and the Great Circle just a stone stele’s throw from true greatness."
