‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ Sets EA, BioWare Playercount Records On Steam

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a hit. After largely positive reviews, that appears to have translated into sales and a playercount that has broken records on PC.

Obscure_Observer173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

Veilguard is now EA´s most successful single player game to date on Steam and this weekend Bioware´s newest RPG managed to beat all of Sony´s concurrent player numbers for single player games released on the platform to date!

Bioware is definitely back!

kenpachi173d ago

if you are going to troll at least make an effort because its just sad at this point

VersusDMC173d ago

I guess it is ok to point out that dragon age has a highest concurrent of 84k compared to ghost of tsushimas 77k. Helldivers 2 458k doesn't count because it is multiplayer so i won't bring it up.

Might as well point out that dragon age definitely destroys Hellblade 2 highest concurrent of 4k...

VenomUK172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

How did I know it would be woke-grifter Paul Tassi behind this piece running defence for EA, championing the ‘success’ of Dragon Age: The Veilguard?!

thorstein173d ago

You had a great comment. I'm not sure why you had to bring Sony into a Steam/ Bioware story.

LordoftheCritics173d ago

Bioware is neither dead nor is it back.

It's exactly where it was....dying.

neutralgamer1992172d ago

Keep celebrating this because now other publishers will pick and choose who they give the review codes to. They want to create a positive environment around launch because that’s when people are buying the game at full price

I have no horse in this race but this will start a new trend. Only big gaming publications will get review codes (BTW look up the parent company of IGN and how this one company owns other gaming publications)

Unless we speak with our wallets things will only get worse I am just worried that this will set a new trend when it comes to review codes. Other than that like I said I have no horse in this race

LordoftheCritics172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

Which is a good thing because every sane person would pick up on the pattern and that would end this sales pitch/advertising driven gaming journalism.

Veilguard has single handedly exposed the truths about gaming journalism.

@VersusDMC

"Might as well point out that dragon age definitely destroys Hellblade 2 highest concurrent of 4k..."

Easily.

Though I might add that a 7 hours long single player game hardly will even get near 88k concurrent players.

Anyway, facts are facts and you´re right. Veilguard simply destroyed Hellblade II´s concurrent players.

Armaggedon172d ago

Are these people really that salty and threatened by veilguard? I didnt know dragon age getting higher numbers than freaking hellblade could warrant so many downvotes. If there is anything positive about dragon age, the downvotes are coming. Stop pouting guys.lmao

Veilguard is a new game while Sony didn’t released day one sp games on steam so that’s not a fair comparison. If ghost of Tsushima 2 (or what’s called) gets day one release on steam it will beat dragon age

Just like the negative ones.

Christopher172d ago

As opposed to all the people who totally own and play the game on Metacritic/Open Critic and the tons of people who bought, reviewed, and returned the game with 0.1 hours played on Steam?

andydalum173d ago

I'm so torn on buying this game. I have two lines of thought with it.

As far as all of the gender fluid things in the game from what i've heard i'm not a huge fan of because it doesn't stick to established lore in the game. On top of that from what i've heard it doesn't feel like a dark story like prior games.

On the other hand I've heard the comment that the combat has improved which is nice, Graphics seem good, The story seems to be two extremes of people commenting so hard to gauge. I might just end up buying this and making my own opinion but as usual it's hard to sift threw the usual amount of people who want to hate games more than enjoy then and the ones who have played it and really have issues that are reasonable.

thorstein172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

"As far as all of the gender fluid things in the game from what i've heard i'm not a huge fan of because it doesn't stick to established lore in the game."

My character literally had lesbian sex within the first half hour of DA:Origins.

It's a different world than ours and doesn't have people with all these weird hangups about the private lives of other people.

Something that was only invented a few thousand years ago by one desert tribe.

Most other people on earth didn't gaf.

andydalum172d ago

That's fair to be honest. It seems to have plenty of really positive reviews put even those people point out it's a good RPG but it doesn't feel like a dragon age game. The entire point for me is I like the dragon age feel. That one part is a very small part of my hangup. I don't want to play a game that is dragon age in name without feeling like i'm playing a dragon age game. I have played since origins and I hate when games do that aka dead space 3 for me as an example. Wasn't a bad game but just didn't feel like a proper dead space game.

Armaggedon172d ago

@andydalum

It depends on the fee you are talking about. What I like in dragon age games are the lore and mystery. So veilguard feels very dragon age to me, and I am a hardcore fan that has played them all.

Vits172d ago

The story and dialogue in this game are the weakest they’ve ever been in the series. It reminds me of how Bethesda simplified Fallout with Fallout 4. Familiar characters have been reworked so much that they might as well be new, and choices from past games don’t carry over. Combat and gameplay are pretty different too. Exploration is way more limited, though still satisfying. Combat is also less strategic but more fun to watch and feels great to play.

In the end, it feels like a game that borrows the Dragon Age name and world, but it probably would’ve worked better, and been far less divisive, if it was a new franchise. So it's a bad game? No, it's the Dragon Age sequel fans have been asking for a decade? Also, no.

andydalum172d ago

This seems to be the general consensus from people being honest about the game. It's a good game and would have been better as it's own game than a dragon age sequel. Alot of games seem to suffer from this as time goes on and it just makes the games worse off for it. Dead space, Mass Effect are more examples of what i'm thinking. It's why games for me like Halo, Bioshock are still really good to me. Yes some of them have had their issues but I do feel like i'm playing a Halo game or a Bioshock game as the series went on. Halo i'm not going to lie I give a small pass on some things mainly because established lore outside of the game backs up some changes.

I wish more companies would just make a new IP instead of forcing a IP on us that they want to change the identity. Avowed i'm hoping with being a new IP does it decent enough to give it a couple sequels and then move on. Sounds like i'll pass on this game thanks for the honest input.

jznrpg172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

Buy what you want.

goken172d ago

That’s one of of looking at it…

The other would be to compare with another recent release…. Wukong

1) got hammered by mainstream games media, as opposed to dragon age being praised
2) being a completely new IP as opposed to well established dragon age

Wukong reached 2.5M concurrent players… even if we removed the Chinese market which is about 80%… let’s call it 90%, there are still around 250k concurrent players at peak.

REDDURT172d ago

The media is bought off and stuck on none mainstream ideology to change the world. They are set to make you the weirdo when they are the ones who are out of touch. If someone making a game that does not fit the narrative then you are the enemy. The games will suffer and gamers will as well. Just make games all that weird ideology nonsense is not even given a real entry in the story just platform and thrown in without thought.

Armaggedon172d ago

Sing it with me….confirmation…Biassss

Moegooner172d ago

Hammered? You really live in your own little world don't you.

Armaggedon172d ago

Wait huh? I didnt see almost anything negative about black myth. Are we from two different dimensions?lol

SoloZelot90172d ago

Probably just selective. Dragon age received positive reviews while wukong was attacked at different points during its entire production time, including previews.

Killa78172d ago

If you were going to go by quality, neither of them are particularly good or novel games.

Wukong's success is definitely an outlier and not a reflection of quality.

Armaggedon172d ago

What scale are people using to define a good game? Its just a scale, created by the supposedly fallible. There are other scales that can be used.

Christopher172d ago

I didn't know an 81 was hammered. And the lower score on PS5 is earned because it looks bad on PS5 compared to PC (I know first-hand as I switched to PC from PS5 because of how bad it looked).

I know everyone hates this game, but I have had a blast with it. I enjoyed the combat, characters (for the most part), and the story. Not to mention the environments are beautiful. I like this game more than dragon age 2 or inquisition.

raWfodog4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I’m still playing through Inquisition now but will hop into Veilguard after that. I was surprised when it was added to PS+ Essentials last month. I’ll see for myself if it deserves all the hate or not.

Lexreborn24d ago

The best thing about options and people is. Things are allowed to cater to others and they enjoy it, and it’s equally okay if you don’t individually vibe with something.

What’s not okay is over criticizing something due to your personal bias and agendas. Campaigning against harmless things that don’t truly dictate anything in your life. I’m not into dragon age games, but I never once made an agenda to tell people how “bad” each iteration is because it didn’t click for me.

This game deserves nothing more than to be buried in the annals of history, only to resurface decades later as a cautionary tale of the astonishing foolishness that prevailed in 2024.

GhostScholar4d ago

You must have not played a truly bad game I’d you think this is a bad game.

Snookies124d ago

This game was a mockery to the Dragon Age series. I lost all faith in the series thanks to this one.

GhostScholar4d ago

I can see not liking the change in combat but that’s about the only criticism I could give it and I actually had a blast as a veil jumper archer. To each his own I’m not saying it’s the greatest game ever but it’s my favorite dragon age game since origins

TheColbertinator4d ago

That's what people say about every new Dragon Age game. Many fans almost gave up on the series after Dragon Age 2. Even more stopped caring for Inquisition because despite the high reviews, fans of the original Bioware hated the gameplay. Some players never even left the first area "The Hinterlands".

Asterphoenix4d ago

Lots of the main Bioware team is gone from years ago. The site is silly if they want to fix it they would have to re-do everything.

They might as well make a new entry. They should take fan feedback rather than ignoring them to push an agenda.

Definitely didn't feel like a Dragon Age game.

GhostScholar4d ago

I just don’t get that critique. Graphics were great, characters were great, story was great, and I liked the combat as well. Like I said to each his own. It sucks for the people who didn’t like it, but I really enjoyed it.

PanicMechanic3d ago

Characters and story were sure as hell not great at all.

Rancegamerx3d ago

The characters were great? In what universe? They were thinly disguised activists shoehorned into a fantasy setting, prioritizing forced ideology over genuine storytelling. Calling them "great' is an insult to the art of character creation. They lacked depth, relatability, and purpose—a mess that even garbage would resent being compared to.

BioWare Co-Founder Praises Dragon Age Veilguard, Says Long Gaps Between Games Raise Fan Expectations

Bioware co-founder Greg Zeshuck has praised Dragon Age: The Veilguard, saying that lengthy gaps between game releases raise fan expectations.

Redgrave56d ago

Long gaps to an extent, but too long and you enter into impossible expectations and loss of interest. The balance is hard to allow for adequate development time and avoid over inflation of the product, but such a thing aa too long is absolutely a thing.

Dragon Age Veilguard I think was too long, especially after what we ended up getting. Mass Effect 5, if not canceled, will likely suffer a similar fate.

NoDamage56d ago

No it does not. There were no expectations for this game since pretty much nothing was ever really shown to increase hype....the only hype for this game was self generated because of the love of the franchise. It was nothing extreme...and yet they still failed.

There was more hype for anthem then for this game.

goken56d ago

The Self delusion is strong with this one…

-Foxtrot56d ago

Who raised their expectations? People have been iffy with new BioWare games in general since they screwed up the ending of ME3 and they just got lower until Anthem really put us all on a downer

The fact it was so low and still got people disappointed showed you how bad this was.

I’m sorry but simply put he’s talking s***

TheColbertinator55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

The gap between Veilguard and Inquisition was an issue of course but the pressing problem was the lack of confidence towards Bioware after Andromeda and Anthem. These two games were to be pillars of Bioware's continued dominance in the RPG market. In the days since other RPG developers have come to take the center stage and push out Bioware. Obsidian, Bethesda, CDPR and Larian are among the many developers who have staked their claim since DA Inquisition launched.

I was happy with the last two PS+ Essential Game Lineups too, but this one is a ton cooler. Owned TMNT Collection on PC already, but will most likely play it again on the bigger screen.

Is Dragon Age The Veilguard worth the time it probably needs? Liked the previous games of the series a lot.

pwnmaster300057d ago (Edited 57d ago )

I mean no harm in trying.
I’m glad it is because I was just gonna buy it.
I usually just grab any monthly game.
I have so much games that I’ve never played sitting in my library because of the monthly games lol. Do they have an expiration?

Popsicle57d ago

So long as you stay subscribed they stay in your library.

Terry_B57d ago

Only if you unsubscribe to ps+..but even if you make a subscription pause of years, they would be back if you subscribe again with the same PSN account ^^

Back in August '24 I started the crazy quest to try and beat as many of the ..around 350 PS4+PS5 ps+ games I have + a few bought one sin physical form ..since I started subscribing back in 2013 already. From A-Z.

Played through a weird game named 2064 Read Only Memories..had a lot of fun and almost tears with the damn awesome 2 "A Plague Tale" games, enjoyed Alan Wake, Aliens Fireteam Squad or what its called and a couple more games started with A.

When I was at the standalone dlc for Assassins creed IV Black Flag I bought that friggin whole game and beat it because I liked the dlc.

Now in february 2025 I am still at fucking letter B because I also bought Barman Arkham Collection and just beat Arkham City, Getting the time for all these games that are good and come for such a small price is more soulslike than anything from FromSoftware.

Lets see if I make it to Letter D by the end of the year >:I

This really feel like good value for the plus sub. Can't wait to give DA and Sonic a try. Already have TMNT

Jingsing55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

@Terry_B How is PS+ good value if for example I haven't been subscribed for 5 years, Then 5 years later I want to play a game I got on the service. I have to pay $100 or more whatever the price will be in the future, almost certainly higher. That isn't value at all having to pay a high access fee for an old 10 year old game. Nothing about game subscriptions make financial sense unless you can keep them in your library without having to constantly pay for it. That is how they make the money and you ultimately lose as a consumer.

Dragon Age has a fun combat system that offers good challenge on the higher difficulty (haven't tried normal).

I'm about 10-12 hours in, on PC where it runs so well, and just got Lucanis in my party. Graphics are nice, audio is good, quality of voice actors is also good.

The only problem at this point is there are signs of overly-positive writing and one character I've complained about before that is especially annoying.

I haven't played more because of other games, not because it isn't fun or the writing is *that* off-putting.

Maybe as I play more I'll like it less, but for now, I know enough about the tone of the writing that I can brush that aside and enjoy a fun game with acting that's still good despite some of what they're given - the core of what's been about the story is written better than when it's about or involving that specific irritating character.

VenomUK57d ago

For Dragon Age: The Veilguard to be included in PS Plus so soon after release just goes to show how far EA/Bioware shit the bed.

thorstein57d ago

I'd place it just below Inquisition. There are parts that I really enjoyed getting into the backstory about, especially the infractions with Solas. Luckily there are many companions and you can usually pick who you want with you.

The character stories are decent, with some being quite enjoyable.

nitus1056d ago

I spent a few hours on Inquisition and while I think the gameplay was fine I just lost interest. Of course I did have Dark Souls 2, 3, Bloodborne and a suite of RPG's that I also wanted to play at the time.

Oh well I will bookmark all the games in case I eventually wish to play them.

Luc2057d ago

Playing all these games sounds like a full time job! No doubt you'll come across a gem once in a while.

Abear2156d ago

If it wasn’t for GT7 I’d probably finish more games. Want TMNT just for the nostalgia high and will play it some, but backlog be damned!

I’m only adding must play games to the pile bc I’m already a year behind haven’t started RE4 yet or Alan Wake 2, hopefully news of GTA6 or RDR2 remaster happens by the time I finish them. Probably finish Skyrim before I play Veilguard.

Daeloki56d ago

Veilguard is fun to a degree, but sadly falls a bit short from its predecessors. I bought it at release because I was excited to have it, but sadly I was a bit blinded to actual valid criticism by all the typical loud anti-woke rantings. As in, by the time I wanted to check reviews, all you could really see was grown white men crying about pronouns and other optional character features, and all actual criticism was kinda drowned out.

That said, I think the gameplay is fun, although it can get a bit repetitive. It looks stunning in my opinnion, but the writing isn't very deep. Everyone gets along a bit too well, there is no real friction or risk of uppsetting your companions. Visually it's very pleasing, spells and abilities are flashy and cool, and combat is very fluid and dynamic. The companions had initially interesting storylines, but they kinda fell short despite the potential.

A companion has an optional storyline about their gender. If you choose to go through that particular companion storyline, you can button beat the dialog and avoid it.
