Dragon Age: The Veilguard Isn't The Dragon Age Game Fans Waited 10 Years For

"Dragon Age: The Veilguard may still end up being a good game, maybe even a great game, but this is not the game any fan ever envisioned."

So if all the Dragon Age games, which one was THE Dragon Age everyone wants? I only ask because none of them are similar.

Tacoboto241d ago

First one is my favorite of the first three.

The second felt rushed (because it was) - I stopped for six months, went to two dungeons on separate areas of the map the first hour I picked it back up, that were exactly the same but for one difference: the entrance and exit were swapped lol.

The third one, as a kinda completionist, I got stuck in the Hinterlands and quit playing before even finishing that. It felt so draining and those side quests never seemed to end there.

I'm excited for Veilguard. The marketing is on point. The interviews from IGN show excitement from the team making it. The art style doesn't bother me one bit (especially as someone who actually played DA2). It is not open world so the bloat of DAI isn't gonna be here.

And it's Day One on Steam, with no mtx or timesaver BS.

ChiefofLoliPolice240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

More power to ya. This game looks like garbage. The combat looks bland, can't control your sqaudmates anymore, art direction, enemies, and character models look too fortnite/cartoony like, the quinari are god ugly. The certain aspects of the character creator are just pathetic and the whole top surgery scar thing?

That doesn't even make sense in this video game universe where magic can transform and turn people into anything. I mean cmon it's obvious what they are trying to do with that

The dialog by what I have seen in the trailers so far don't feel like dragon age at all.

This game just doesn't speak to me. But hey to each his own.

thorstein241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

Origins.

Then Inquisition.

neutralgamer1992240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

In my opinion, the first Dragon Age struck a perfect balance as an RPG, offering something for both casual and core gamers. Its combat system was versatile, working well for different play styles. Then came Dragon Age 2, which veered heavily into hack-and-slash territory. Unfortunately, it lacked the depth in story and quality content to support that shift—it felt rushed and unfinished.

When Dragon Age: Inquisition arrived, it was, at best, mediocre. The gameplay was repetitive, with countless fetch quests required just to unlock and progress the main story. What frustrates me most is that Inquisition doesn’t get enough criticism for how it impacted the franchise—probably because so many are still stuck on the flaws of the second game. But, in my view, Inquisition was far worse in almost every aspect. Any good content it had was buried under a mountain of tedious chores.

Now, with Dragon Age: Dreadwolf on the horizon, I can only hope the series will regain its original form and deliver the rich RPG experience fans have come to expect. However, the expectations for high-quality RPGs has risen significantly since the early days of the franchise, and Dragon Age has a lot to prove. As much as I want to be wrong, I have a feeling the new installment might fall short, landing around a 7.5 to 7.8 out of 10

Why is it that games from EA and UBI sound only good on spreadsheets and just don’t translate into high quality GOTY type experiences. Star Wars outlaws is such a. Frustrating experience because there is a good game hidden underneath all the negative stuff of type UBI games

mkis007240d ago

It's kinda hilarious because based on the SoP footage this may be the only dragon age that looks fun to my playstyle. I couldn't get into ant of the others.

jznrpg222d ago

I enjoyed the past games (2 not so much) but this looks good too. I like different types of RPGs

Armaggedon239d ago

When you hear someone say “its not the drsgon age game we want”, just think Baldurs Gate 3. Thats what people eant from Bioware.

jznrpg222d ago (Edited 222d ago )

First one was my favorite. Inquisition was pretty good. 2 was the jankiest. This one looks pretty good to me. I would have preferred an art style more like the first but it’s not a deal breaker for me. Combat and mechanics look good. I’m open to all types of RPGs and I think this one will be at least pretty good

DOMination-241d ago

Bioware found their own style with cinematic, third-person action RPGs and they aren't going back. (I'm not suggesting that's good or bad btw). There are plenty other studios make old-school CRPGs if that's what you want though.

A lot of people got to preview this game for 8 hours at the beginning of September - everyone I've seen who went to the event have had nothing but overwhelmingly positive views on it. The combat is apparently very fluid after the tutorial and choice you make end up taking the story down completely different arcs during Act 1. It also looks really good and is incredibly well optimised (Steam Deck approved months before release!)

I think a lot of people who are spinning the narrative that this game is bad have based it on that original trailer and that alone - but I think this is going to surprise quite a few people.

Dabigsiebowski241d ago

Chances are it's a DEI vested game. Hopefully I'm wrong really but I'm not interested if so and I fear it's gonna get thrown in the DEI pile of crap I refuse to touch after seeing how incompetent some of these choices are hindering games.

Tacoboto241d ago

What makes any previous DA *not* DEI or woke?

bababooiy241d ago

For one it didnt have a director who openly rants on social media how all whites should be "hanged" and "crucified" for being white. Then brags about how they no longer hire whites or asians. Also the purple came from the fact its a trans color, its ment to represent trans right which is also why all characters are non binary and bi sexual. You literally cant be a woman or man, again director openly stated he doesnt want that in his game.

Tacoboto241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

She, you regressive jerk. She is also white lol. You don't even know the person you're trying to insult.

Purple also isn't even a color in the trans flag. It's pink, blue, and white.

Michiel1989241d ago

people really go way too hard anti woke, that when not everyone is a hot character that you want to fuck it's suddenly woke.

BlackTar187240d ago

Talk about a disingenuous comment

Michiel1989240d ago

talk about shifting the definition of the word to "something you don't like" instead of what it was originally meant for

thorstein241d ago

You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

stupidusername241d ago

Was there not sources years ago saying that the new Dragon Age would be multi part live service games? I’m happy they went another way, but I’m sure they’ve gone back and forth with different concepts before landing on Veilguard. I’m just happy we get a new one.

Tacoboto241d ago

When Anthem flopped, as I recall the rumors, the DA team was able to convince EA to let them drop all MP elements.

Based on that, it would seem like the team didn't want MP at any point so that would've been a directive from EA. I'm glad too with the path they were able/allowed to go.

Asterphoenix241d ago

DEI agenda driven game and don't like the graphic/character style so it's a pass. Wouldn't mind a DA1 Remake but all of it like the original without today's problems included.

AndrewM240d ago

Almost every game ever made can be classified as DEI. Stop listening to right wing freaks telling you what to think or you will never play games again.

I know everyone hates this game, but I have had a blast with it. I enjoyed the combat, characters (for the most part), and the story. Not to mention the environments are beautiful. I like this game more than dragon age 2 or inquisition.

raWfodog37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

I’m still playing through Inquisition now but will hop into Veilguard after that. I was surprised when it was added to PS+ Essentials last month. I’ll see for myself if it deserves all the hate or not.

Lexreborn237d ago

The best thing about options and people is. Things are allowed to cater to others and they enjoy it, and it’s equally okay if you don’t individually vibe with something.

What’s not okay is over criticizing something due to your personal bias and agendas. Campaigning against harmless things that don’t truly dictate anything in your life. I’m not into dragon age games, but I never once made an agenda to tell people how “bad” each iteration is because it didn’t click for me.

This game deserves nothing more than to be buried in the annals of history, only to resurface decades later as a cautionary tale of the astonishing foolishness that prevailed in 2024.

GhostScholar37d ago

You must have not played a truly bad game I’d you think this is a bad game.

Snookies1237d ago

This game was a mockery to the Dragon Age series. I lost all faith in the series thanks to this one.

GhostScholar37d ago

I can see not liking the change in combat but that’s about the only criticism I could give it and I actually had a blast as a veil jumper archer. To each his own I’m not saying it’s the greatest game ever but it’s my favorite dragon age game since origins

TheColbertinator37d ago

That's what people say about every new Dragon Age game. Many fans almost gave up on the series after Dragon Age 2. Even more stopped caring for Inquisition because despite the high reviews, fans of the original Bioware hated the gameplay. Some players never even left the first area "The Hinterlands".

Asterphoenix37d ago

Lots of the main Bioware team is gone from years ago. The site is silly if they want to fix it they would have to re-do everything.

They might as well make a new entry. They should take fan feedback rather than ignoring them to push an agenda.

Definitely didn't feel like a Dragon Age game.

GhostScholar36d ago

I just don’t get that critique. Graphics were great, characters were great, story was great, and I liked the combat as well. Like I said to each his own. It sucks for the people who didn’t like it, but I really enjoyed it.

PanicMechanic36d ago

Characters and story were sure as hell not great at all.

Rancegamerx36d ago

The characters were great? In what universe? They were thinly disguised activists shoehorned into a fantasy setting, prioritizing forced ideology over genuine storytelling. Calling them "great' is an insult to the art of character creation. They lacked depth, relatability, and purpose—a mess that even garbage would resent being compared to.

The DLC was supposed to feature a blond haired dude, with orange skin, that bans all woke nonsense from the game.

BioWare Co-Founder Praises Dragon Age Veilguard, Says Long Gaps Between Games Raise Fan Expectations

Bioware co-founder Greg Zeshuck has praised Dragon Age: The Veilguard, saying that lengthy gaps between game releases raise fan expectations.

Redgrave89d ago

Long gaps to an extent, but too long and you enter into impossible expectations and loss of interest. The balance is hard to allow for adequate development time and avoid over inflation of the product, but such a thing aa too long is absolutely a thing.

Dragon Age Veilguard I think was too long, especially after what we ended up getting. Mass Effect 5, if not canceled, will likely suffer a similar fate.

NoDamage89d ago

No it does not. There were no expectations for this game since pretty much nothing was ever really shown to increase hype....the only hype for this game was self generated because of the love of the franchise. It was nothing extreme...and yet they still failed.

There was more hype for anthem then for this game.

goken89d ago

The Self delusion is strong with this one…

-Foxtrot89d ago

Who raised their expectations? People have been iffy with new BioWare games in general since they screwed up the ending of ME3 and they just got lower until Anthem really put us all on a downer

The fact it was so low and still got people disappointed showed you how bad this was.

I’m sorry but simply put he’s talking s***

TheColbertinator88d ago (Edited 88d ago )

The gap between Veilguard and Inquisition was an issue of course but the pressing problem was the lack of confidence towards Bioware after Andromeda and Anthem. These two games were to be pillars of Bioware's continued dominance in the RPG market. In the days since other RPG developers have come to take the center stage and push out Bioware. Obsidian, Bethesda, CDPR and Larian are among the many developers who have staked their claim since DA Inquisition launched.

I was happy with the last two PS+ Essential Game Lineups too, but this one is a ton cooler. Owned TMNT Collection on PC already, but will most likely play it again on the bigger screen.

Is Dragon Age The Veilguard worth the time it probably needs? Liked the previous games of the series a lot.

pwnmaster300090d ago (Edited 90d ago )

I mean no harm in trying.
I’m glad it is because I was just gonna buy it.
I usually just grab any monthly game.
I have so much games that I’ve never played sitting in my library because of the monthly games lol. Do they have an expiration?

Popsicle90d ago

So long as you stay subscribed they stay in your library.

Terry_B90d ago

Only if you unsubscribe to ps+..but even if you make a subscription pause of years, they would be back if you subscribe again with the same PSN account ^^

Back in August '24 I started the crazy quest to try and beat as many of the ..around 350 PS4+PS5 ps+ games I have + a few bought one sin physical form ..since I started subscribing back in 2013 already. From A-Z.

Played through a weird game named 2064 Read Only Memories..had a lot of fun and almost tears with the damn awesome 2 "A Plague Tale" games, enjoyed Alan Wake, Aliens Fireteam Squad or what its called and a couple more games started with A.

When I was at the standalone dlc for Assassins creed IV Black Flag I bought that friggin whole game and beat it because I liked the dlc.

Now in february 2025 I am still at fucking letter B because I also bought Barman Arkham Collection and just beat Arkham City, Getting the time for all these games that are good and come for such a small price is more soulslike than anything from FromSoftware.

Lets see if I make it to Letter D by the end of the year >:I

Eonjay89d ago

This really feel like good value for the plus sub. Can't wait to give DA and Sonic a try. Already have TMNT

Jingsing87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

@Terry_B How is PS+ good value if for example I haven't been subscribed for 5 years, Then 5 years later I want to play a game I got on the service. I have to pay $100 or more whatever the price will be in the future, almost certainly higher. That isn't value at all having to pay a high access fee for an old 10 year old game. Nothing about game subscriptions make financial sense unless you can keep them in your library without having to constantly pay for it. That is how they make the money and you ultimately lose as a consumer.

Dragon Age has a fun combat system that offers good challenge on the higher difficulty (haven't tried normal).

I'm about 10-12 hours in, on PC where it runs so well, and just got Lucanis in my party. Graphics are nice, audio is good, quality of voice actors is also good.

The only problem at this point is there are signs of overly-positive writing and one character I've complained about before that is especially annoying.

I haven't played more because of other games, not because it isn't fun or the writing is *that* off-putting.

Maybe as I play more I'll like it less, but for now, I know enough about the tone of the writing that I can brush that aside and enjoy a fun game with acting that's still good despite some of what they're given - the core of what's been about the story is written better than when it's about or involving that specific irritating character.

VenomUK90d ago

For Dragon Age: The Veilguard to be included in PS Plus so soon after release just goes to show how far EA/Bioware shit the bed.

thorstein90d ago

I'd place it just below Inquisition. There are parts that I really enjoyed getting into the backstory about, especially the infractions with Solas. Luckily there are many companions and you can usually pick who you want with you.

The character stories are decent, with some being quite enjoyable.

nitus1089d ago

I spent a few hours on Inquisition and while I think the gameplay was fine I just lost interest. Of course I did have Dark Souls 2, 3, Bloodborne and a suite of RPG's that I also wanted to play at the time.

Oh well I will bookmark all the games in case I eventually wish to play them.

Luc2089d ago

Playing all these games sounds like a full time job! No doubt you'll come across a gem once in a while.

Abear2189d ago

If it wasn’t for GT7 I’d probably finish more games. Want TMNT just for the nostalgia high and will play it some, but backlog be damned!

I’m only adding must play games to the pile bc I’m already a year behind haven’t started RE4 yet or Alan Wake 2, hopefully news of GTA6 or RDR2 remaster happens by the time I finish them. Probably finish Skyrim before I play Veilguard.

Daeloki89d ago

Veilguard is fun to a degree, but sadly falls a bit short from its predecessors. I bought it at release because I was excited to have it, but sadly I was a bit blinded to actual valid criticism by all the typical loud anti-woke rantings. As in, by the time I wanted to check reviews, all you could really see was grown white men crying about pronouns and other optional character features, and all actual criticism was kinda drowned out.

That said, I think the gameplay is fun, although it can get a bit repetitive. It looks stunning in my opinnion, but the writing isn't very deep. Everyone gets along a bit too well, there is no real friction or risk of uppsetting your companions. Visually it's very pleasing, spells and abilities are flashy and cool, and combat is very fluid and dynamic. The companions had initially interesting storylines, but they kinda fell short despite the potential.

Ooh Sonic colors. I never actually got around to beating my Wii copy. I hope it's been improved cuz I heard at lunch it wasn't the best

Terry_B90d ago

Much better graphics, better controls, more languages, a new game mode even some decently remixed music tracks

DoubleYourDose90d ago

Definitely better for a late night snack.

Profchaos89d ago

Yeah same I struggled with the Wii version back in the day because it ran terrible so I'm excited to play this

Cockney89d ago

Someone told me at breakfast the game was a bit on the woke side, I won't download it till after dinner, maybe ill hear different by then

thorstein89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

A companion has an optional storyline about their gender. If you choose to go through that particular companion storyline, you can button beat the dialog and avoid it.

That stuff doesn't bother me at all, but I found that character annoying anyway.

they love throwing the leftover slop on there lately

Profchaos89d ago

Absolutely it's coming to be honest I'd rather play the underwater tnmt NES level on repeat than start dragon age

Popsicle89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

I am absolutely more excited about the Cowabunga collection when compared to the other 2 offerings. In all honesty it is probably the only game out of the 3 that I will get around to playing.

I just bought Dragon Age too lol. $25 off Amazon. Guess I'll just leave it sealed then 🤷🏾.

badz14988d ago

OtterX90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

Wow, pretty amazing as Veilguard just came out in October. Opinions have been pretty mixed, but I'll happily try it out for free. I loved Inquisition, but I know to keep my expectations lower for this one.

As for TMNT collection, I had bought for Switch a long while back so i could have it for portable play. I'm really happy to get it again on PS5 for trophies.

crazyCoconuts90d ago

Yeah highly unusual to have it Veilguard on PS+ so soon! Don't know if that's a statement of how great PS+ is, how poorly Veilguard did, or a combination of both.

raWfodog89d ago

Yup, get to try it out for myself sooner rather than later without having to 'buy' it. It's really telling that this next DA game has been shifted to PS Plus so soon after its release but I'm still willing to give it a go after the lackluster reviews.

Ninver89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

Try it out you may. But know that nothing is free.
