Remedy Discusses Alan Wake 2 On PS5 Pro, Stresses Image Quality Over Resolution

Remedy Entertainment has dropped some hints regarding its survival horror game, Alan Wake 2, on Sony's mid-gen console, the PS5 Pro.

Can't wait for the Max Payne Remakes(s).
Should be optimized for PS5 Pro as well as Path tracing at PC side.

GamerRN4d ago

Home HellDivers 2 at a locked 60 with no slowdown, and better effects. Alan Wake 2 already looks great

Obscure_Observer5d ago

"Thomas Puha, Head of Communications at Remedy Entertainment, took to the gaming enthusiast forum Reset Era to state that he can’t confirm anything with regards to details on Alan Wake 2 on PS5 Pro, though he did share that he believes image quality matters more than resolution."

There you have it. Looks like DF´s analysis and results on PS5 Pro´s 864p internal resolution for Alan Wake 2 were accurated.

Zeke685d ago

No proof DF is right. Where did you get that from?

Amplitude5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

DF is rarely ever wrong, other than opinions on things people disagree with, little one-off things on the podcast, or attempts to predict the future which they're very clear when they're doing so. Their written material and facts in videos are always correct.

Since they posted on Patreon that AW2 currently runs at 864p internal, and then Remedy came out and said they're prioritizing image quality over resolution, it is proof that DF was right. Which I have no doubt that they are - and as long as PSSR does some heavy lifting, shouldn't be an issue either.

TheNamelessOne5d ago

It's as Amp said, DF is pretty much the go-to for stuff like this. Even on here. Until, of course, people don't like the results.

MetroidFREAK215d ago

I trust DF for all tech analysis... they tend to know what they are doing

1nsomniac5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Did DF mention what they thought of PSSR? Is it any good? how does it compare to DLSS etc…

Kornholic5d ago

That number is based on the analysis DF did of the PS5 Pro reveal YouTube video. DF hasn't analyzed the actual PS5 Pro version yet.

Charlieboy3335d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@ Amp Well DF were also confident that the series X would dominate the PS5 in performance and we all know how that turned out

@1nsomniac

"Did DF mention what they thought of PSSR? Is it any good? how does it compare to DLSS etc…"

According to early analysis on a few games: DLSS>PSSR>FSR.

At the moment I say it´s great!

Wasn't really expecting PSSR to be up to or even close with DLSS anyway. But to deliver better results than FRS is definitely a commendable feat.

No words on PSSR vs TSR yet though, but I believe Black Myth Wukong will be great test for both.

OldDuffer4d ago

Reputation is a cruel thing.

Your post was factual, informative, and even complimentary of a system I know you don't care for, but you get 13 dislikes anyway, based on past posts I'd assume.

I'd like to thank you for being honest and factual anyway. I'd like to believe your posts will always be this way :)

Einhander19725d ago

"he did share that he believes image quality matters more than resolution"

"The Digital Foundry staff presumed the PS5 Pro footage they analyzed was using PSSR"

"Puha further stated that Remedy Entertainment will drop some details on the PS5 Pro version of Alan Wake 2 in the coming weeks, along with some assets too"

Let wait until we hear what the actual developers have to say about the game.

You are being deceptive and purposely not looking at the whole picture when you're presenting your arguments against PS5 Pro.

The fact is the PS5 Pro version is going to be the best place to play the game, and this is just an early game that is simply being patched for the Pro. Just wait until we get some games designed for it that really show off what the console can do after developers have more time with it.

I am fully confident that the PS5 Pro will consistently be the best console experience.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

"You are being deceptive and purposely not looking at the whole picture when you're presenting your arguments against PS5 Pro."

No dude, you´re the one who won´t listen to anyone but yourself (ok, maybe you´ll listen to Fr0sty)

You´re the one expecting the Pro to deliver performance and results which obviously can´t be delivered due it´s own limitations.

It´s an unbalanced system. New more powerful GPU x CPU 4 years old.

Yeah, PSSR is great (By DF´s own admission, mind you), but it won´t perform a miracle like GTA VI running at 60fps, if Rockstar can´t bother to implement a performance mode for current gen consoles.

Mark Cerny was very careful with his words when he said "narrow the divide" between Fidelity and Performance modes.

Why? Well, obviously because when comes to the PS5 Pro he can´t guarantee Fidelity graphics and level of detail will be preserved while the game runs at 60fps for all games.

See R&C: Rift Apart´s case for instance, thanks to PSSR it will achieve a "4K" image quality at 60fps but with performance settings in place rather than Fidelity settings, which means it will impact on the level of detail, shadow cascades, indirect lighting, draw distance... etc.

That´s the price to pay. So keep in mind that there´ll always be *Trade-offs*, like you or not. I know you don´t like to hear it, but it is what it is.

"I am fully confident that the PS5 Pro will consistently be the best console experience."

Possibly the best. Maybe just not the most cost-effective when comes to PS5 Pro vs Base PS5, IMO, that´s all.

Einhander19724d ago

"Possibly the best. Maybe just not the most cost-effective when comes to PS5 Pro vs Base PS5, IMO, that´s all."

I am fully confident that the PS5 Pro is more cost effective than an 2tb xbox with no hardware improvements for $600.

jwillj2k45d ago

Typical PC player response.

DF is right when they say the pro is too expensive.

DF is right when they count pixels in a youtube video and the count is seen aa lower than series s.

DF is wrong when they say ps5 pro is comparable to a 4070.

DF is wrong when they say a comparable pc build will cost a bit more.

DF is only analyzing the footage from technical presentation, AW2 was shown for like 4-5 seconds.
until remedy release official footage or DF get their hands on ps5 pro we wont know whats the real deal.

Kaze885d ago

Same ress, double the FPS. This game is hard to run even on PC 60fps on decent ress. How are we surprised about this? You really want to run a shooting game at 30fps 4k? nah bruh fk that.

OldDuffer4d ago

They analysed some video footage from an early reveal and they literally had less than 7 seconds. I'm sure they are correct about what they analysed.

It may well be that this will be indicative of what the final delivery will be for this game, but that seems pretty unlikely, to me and it can only be confirmed once we have final assets from either the publisher, the developer, or from the game itself. they dont even know what modes will be offered. They are working in the dark.

Shame the Pro can't fix the lame game design.

RaidenBlack5d ago

Wait for the Magic Station Pro, then.

hennessey865d ago

With PSSR being similar to XESS and DLSS, base resolution really doesn't matter, PSSR is going to be a game changer for the PS5 Pro

The base resolution does matter. The higher the base resolution the better the overall image quality.

PassNextquestion5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I wonder why we don't just have plug in upgrades like the older consoles use to do. They seem to be just as popular and effective.

A 4GB vram increase would be just as effective as what's done here and you wouldn't need to sell your original PS5 and shell out another few hundred dollars. Either way the console will be bottlenecked by the CPU.

SimpleDad5d ago

You can upgrade you're disc drive separately... oh no... they are sold out.
That's why.

PassNextquestion5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Consoles sell out as well...

I'm sure they can produce my vram module upgrades faster then a whole new console

All PS5 Pro Enhanced games listed - titles so far

Sadly... no bloodborne on that list. I feel it may never be.

darthv7211d ago

Reading more about PS5 Pro Game Boost... it wasn't what I initially thought it was. I was thinking it would be like FPS Boost but it is specifically for resolution, not performance.

"PS5 Pro Game Boost Explained

Like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro will also include a "Game Boost" mode that retroactively enhances older games on the console. This applies to PS4 games as well, utilizing PSSR upscaling to boost image quality. PS5 Pro's Game Boost will apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games on the console, improving their resolution. The feature will also apply to PS VR2 games, as revealed in CNET's hands-on preview of the console."

https://www.mensjournal.com...

MrNinosan11d ago

But the blog writes:

"Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games."

Stabilize or improve the performance is what I read as framerates?

Profchaos11d ago

Boost modes can not break a frame rate cap something like bloodborne van be brute forced to maintain 30fps but never go above.

Best example of this is fallout 4 on PS4 when it's boost mode was enabled on the pro the game ran much better and maintained its 30 cap whereas before it would stutter and struggle.

darthv7211d ago

^^ "supported" being the key word. So things would be status quo as they are for performance but resolution improvements looks to be across the board.

Cacabunga11d ago

PS4 Pro was promoting the not yet released heavy hitter games at that time, like God of War, Horizon, Days Gone and of course improving VR quality experience. It just made sense..

PS5pro is flexing using last gen titles. Absolute joke.
First time ever a Sony console is an easy pass for me.

fr0sty10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

PSSR can upscale both frame rate and resolution. Being that PSSR works on the game after the engine renders the image, there is no reason why it couldn't generate extra frames as well as more pixels before sending it to the display.

They have to sell u a remaster first, and then a remake.

neutralgamer199211d ago

Did I read this right that some of the partners will release free updates so others might charge for it? This level of greed is getting absurd. Many games got paid next generation update so I guess now that’s a thing

northpaws11d ago

I think it was the same for PS4 Pro.

darthv7211d ago

I dont recall paying anything for an upgrade on the PS4 Pro. On PS5 I did buy into the Spider-man upgrade as well as Ghosts of Tsushima.

Tacoboto11d ago

There was never a PS4 Pro-Enhanced Premium Upgrade.

jznrpg11d ago

You make an assumption then get upset about the assumption. Just wait and see. So many people get upset so easily. Life is short try to enjoy it

neutralgamer199211d ago

No assumptions since Sony themselves said some partners meaning not all will release free updates. And we have already seen next generation updates cost money coming from PS4 to PS5

Yes you are right we should enjoy our hobby and I am not upset. Just really tired of all the greed that has entered this industry over the past 10-15 years. Just look at sports titles which have become mini casinos with all the micro transactions

Inverno11d ago

Gotta pay 10 bucks to enhance the 10 bucks you paid to enhance the 60 bucks you paid for a PS4 game. Whatchu wanna bet that this will lead up to a new 80 dollar price standard? Im almost entirely sure that GTA will be the game to set the higher price standard.

neutralgamer199211d ago

Oh yes that’s coming. You are being in the low end with $80. GTA6 could be the first game to do $99.99. Sell less make more. With budgets for games going to in 100’s of millions we will see the cost go higher. That’s just the sad reality. Way too many suits got involved with our hobby and realized this industry was making billions more than any other entertainment industry. And now it’s all about spreadsheets

Christopher11d ago

They can't dictate if they charge for it or not, sadly.

neutralgamer199211d ago

That’s true and whatever they know they charge for and get away with they will. This isn’t just about PlayStation that’s gaming in general

crazyCoconuts11d ago

@neutral - companies selling things to consumers that are willing to pay for them... Goes beyond gaming even

northpaws11d ago

Even if it is true, Sony has no right to dictate whether a third party would provide a update for free or not.

outsider162410d ago

Rdr2 comes to mind. So far Rockstar also hasn't releasedany 60fps patch. Are they gonna charge u for it i wonder?

rob-GP10d ago

I highly doubt you heard this, because its simply not true.

*If* you read or heard anything, it will have just been "some partners will release free updates that enable PS5 enhancements..." that's it. Then, you fabricated that if it's not free then it's a paid upgrade, when in reality they mean some will release patches and some won't - the same as last gen.

In my personal opinion
I see NOOOOOOOOOO difference in graphics comparing it to regular PS5 graphics...I'll pass until PS6

jwillj2k411d ago

Thats because youre watching a 1080p compressed video curtesy of youtube.

TheKingKratos11d ago

I watched in 4k and didn't see shit .. Even in their own video they needed to 200% zoom in to notice something different in a Fking Draw distance lmao 😂😂
Only for 700

Neonridr10d ago

frame rate aside, you aren't really going to see much visual improvements. Unless you are like Mark going nuts because the foliage in the distance is a little more rendered.

Eidolon11d ago

I think they compared games, with PSSR that looked better and ran at 60fps vs 30fps on base PS5.

jwillj2k411d ago

@ TheKingKratos

The video was streamed at 1080p by sony. Doesnt matter what the youtube settings are.

sagapo11d ago

It’s a bit dumb by Sony to go into detail on gfx differences and stream the whole thing at 1080p don’t you think?
But I’m sure sites like DF will come with proper videos for that.

Juiceup11d ago

The only difference that will sell me is 60+ frame rate. If lots of new games will release running 60fr close to or equal to Fidelity mode like they are saying, it's probably worth it to me. But I detected a lot of 'business speak' bs in that 8 minute video. I honestly care very little about what it can do for games I've already played my fill of.

ZERO.
The number of physical games I own that are enhanced.

DiRtY11d ago

I didn’t watch the reveal, but expected ~100 games on that list. There are only 14 titles?

WTH were they thinking?

Zeke6811d ago

They said at least 50 titles at release in November, still not a huge number but a little better...

Zeke6810d ago

For the downvoter, troll your way over to Cnet and see what Sony said to them. ;)

EazyC11d ago

Perhaps a slower than anticipated long term release schedule forced them into playing their hardware hand
