Rough start that's for sure, but I honestly feel like the same can be said for half of PlayStations 1st party, they are dead silent for an uncharacteristically long time at this point. But the generation isn't over, and if I had to guess, I'd say this ghosting phase is why Jim is being hurried out the door before they even have a replacement. PlayStation has ALWAYS been consistent in their rate of delivery, typically 3 bangers a year, and always a couple on the horizon. I know sooner or later games will start to drop, but this has to be the biggest bald spot in their legacy IMO.

The 9th generation has just been a fumble, period. I’ve never ebetered a console generation where 3 years in you finally start getting a steady stream of current-gen only games. I remember the days when you got a new console and you’d be playing games Day 1 that were new and unavailable on last-gen.

Bought an Xbox Series X and I was baffled that literally it was all cross-gen titles. I was excited with PS5 and Demons Souls Remake, but then a large majority of games were all available last-gen. Then you have the completely unnecessary price hike and it’s just, I dunno, it takes the piss out of you knowing it could’ve been 3 years of games pushing these consoles to limit instead of being all cross-gen and less exciting.

Well they certainly had their struggles with Factions, and the general consensus is that the remakes of Part 1 and 2 are nice, but most people would rather see them spending that time on a new IP, Factions or Part 3.

However, ND usually come out swinging at the end of the console cycle so expect their new IP/Part 3 somewhere in 2027/2028.

Rumor is naughty dog didn't want live service titles either. Plus covid impacted everything. The last 'new' game was Last of Us Part 2 in 2020 - since then they've fully remade Last of Us Part 1, helped out with the PC port, and Remastered both UC4 and LL so they're 4k, at 30, 40, 60 and 120 fps on PS5. Not to mention, they're apparently working on a new IP alongside a possible UC spin-off/sequel, helping out with the Last of US TV show, apparently in pre-production of Last of Us Part 3, and working on the MP (although I doubt anyone will care if that project is scrapped). Also, don't forget the rumoured Last of Us Part 2 remaster on PS5 as well...

So, how have they 'fumbled the generation'? It's been 3 years since the PS launched and their last major title was released - name ANY studio on the article writers 'preferred' console that has been as active whilst working on new games over the last three years. Naughty Dog released their last massive project TLOU2 three years ago. The Last of Us 1 Remake just came out a year ago.

Santa Monica released Ragnarok four years after God of War and that was a sequel. If these people want rushed annual releases they should stick to CoD and Assassin's Creed.

This isn't the PS3 era where Naughty Dog can release Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 within 2 year development cycles. Uncharted 4 came five years after the third game and The Last of Us Part 2 dropped seven years after the first.

Does anybody complain with Rockstar's release calender? Making the best and/or highest production quality of games takes time...who would have thought.

Uncharted 4 development ran from 2011 to 2016 - it took five years to release from Uncharted 3's launch.

The Last of Us Part II development ran from 2014 to 2020 - it took 6 years to get out and 7 years after the first game.

Naughty Dog already confirmed working on a new single player IP.

By next year I'm sure it will be announced.

Naughty Dog’s problem, like many developers right now face, is that they want their sequels to be longer and bigger than the last when a game with a similar length to their previous ones would suffice. TLOU 2 didn’t need to be 12 hours longer than the first game. Surely you can see how unfeasible this kind of development is in the long run.

And yes, Rockstar’s release calendar is worse than ND by far.

Unless you’re okay with crunching developers to death and most games eventually taking almost a decade to release, no, this is not a good thing. ND needs to rein in their ambition and strive to make development more feasible, for themselves and their fans.

If they want to make cheap products and work 40hrs. then they can get paid McDonalds wages like everyone else. As a consumer I am tired of getting jank, devs blaming customers, and still paying a ton of money for their products. This is why most game companies suck at making games.

I’m a HUUUUGGEEE Naughty Dog fan (I liked LoU2 even lol) but I’ve gotta agree. There’s not even been any info to build hype, they’re arguably Sonys biggest player and it’s just been radio silence for months now. They need to drop some kind of bombshell soon. I hope they do a new IP. I can’t be the only one who wants a Savage Starlight game.
