If you have a choice between the two the steam deck is far better as it does so much more. Deck costs more though so if money is tight the portal is a nice choice.

I have a Steam Deck too. They are a lot of fun. Sure it can't play every game but I don't have a gaming PC and for the type of games I play it works just fine, and it's incredibly comfortable to use. Also I love handhelds so it was a no brainer.

As for the Portal, at first I was really against the idea but I'm kind of seeing the appeal now. As said I love handhelds, and our PS5 is on the main TV in the living room, so when my girlfriend is watching something the Portal will allow me to continue playing. Of course that's already a possibility with remote play on my deck or phone, but I lose the excellent Dualsense controls, which is the real strength of the Portal for me.

Biggest misconception about it was that it only works on your home wifi which is false. There are still people who don't understand that to this day.

I'll likely be getting one assuming the lag and response time is acceptable.

That's Sony's fault. Just look at the official product page.

Every time they mention Wi-Fi they specify "home Wi-Fi". The only place that mentions you can use any Wi-Fi is the FAQ at the bottom of the page. This should have been clearly communicated as one of the key features.

I have to agree with Pork chop.

They really did not communicate its utility very well to the public. Any negative critiques to the product's image is their own fault.

Even if we argue that they didn't want to over promise, that's not the issue: all they had to do was communicate what it actually does. Don't embellish, don't undersell. Just tell us what it does, what it doesn't.

They still messed up with Bluetooth connectivity. I wouldn't buy one. It really isn't for me.

I'm planning on getting one purely for home WiFi. I compete with the wife and child for the TV at home and can't find time to play a game because of it. I am hoping the portal works smoothly and then I'll be all over it

Still think it's over priced. I say this because I just recently bought a backbone playstation edition controller.

Instead of using my Samsung s22. I permanently use my old Google pixel 3 with it. Not only does it work perfectly with ps5 remote play (I played miles Moralas start to finish on it) I can also use Xbox Xcloud with it. As well as Nvidia Geforce now and steam link. I can't do that with the PlayStation Portal.

It would actually cost more to buy a nice tablet to play on. And a tablet will not fit in a backbone and a phone screen is too small to play games on imo.

All entitled to opinions. You can get cheap android phones these days that have 6.5" - 7.0" screens for less than £100 and a backbone if you look around are less than £100.

I still don't understand why this is a necessity when remote play can be accessed through a bunch of devices that people who own a PS5 already have. Tablets, phones, PCs, TVs. Can't think of a legitimate reason anyone would buy this other than to feel cool that they have a useless device. Which is fine but at least be honest about it lol

Bro you say that as if this is the cheapest alternative for those who don't have the income. If someone can't afford a phone or tablet then they most likely aren't in the market for a device with absolutely no functionality other than to stream a PS5 through. They most likely don't have a PS5 at all cause they have a tight budget.

I think this is the cheapest option at this quality, yes. As such, it has its uses, as the comments on this page show.

I’m not knocking the options Sony has added over the years (such as android TV remote play) for those who have access to them. But this is a good option also. In fact, neither smartphones nor most tablets are as good devices as this is for gaming, as this is tailor-made for such that purpose. Smartphones are a bit tiny. Tablets are a bit big. I personally used to own an M1 iPad Pro. I would prefer a Portal for my home if given the choice. I could hold this more comfortably closer to my face. Whether I buy it depends on my needs over time.

Again… a second tv or an iPad solves this problem better…. A tablet lets you actually leave the house too. You can even get used ones for cheap. Or get a Backbone and use your smartphone.

100% agreed about the backbone I recently got one. Such a cool device.

I use my old pixel 3 I had sitting in a draw and it's now essentially my portable ps5/Xbox/pc.

You can even use a older cheaper phone as long as it had WiFi 5gz and if you plan on playing outside 5g.

I'm going to counter your "nope" with an "absolutely." It would probably be better to invest in an extra TV at the same exact price point. I bought my 54" TCL 4K TV for just over $200. So, there's not really an argument there. If you could download games to the PS Portal for use while traveling. That would make it MUCH more desirable. Public WiFi is terrible. So, it's only really usable at your home, at least in a stable capacity. A handheld you can't do much with outside of your house is just not worth it. I'd much rather use a Steam Deck or the Switch, despite its lackluster hardware.

The beauty is you don't even need a iPad. A older iPhone or a cheap android phone + a backbone controller just offers so much more than the PS Portal.

The downside to that TV is the inferior wifi and therefore the lag. No thanks.

Also, Portal can connect on the road as long as you have fast wifi, (public wifi isn’t the only option when away from home) whereas the tv you mention locks you in one additional place.

I prefer dual sense to backbone.

The price seems fair (anything over $200 would be hard to justify) and I like the idea of playing PS5 in bed (mine is in the living room)

I live in Tokyo and this summer I mostly played Switch because it was easier to stay in the bedroom where it is cooler. This would solve that. Also my internet connection is insanely fast, so that probably won't be an issue.

I understand it is not for everyone, but if they wanted a device similar to the Deck, we would probably end up paying at least $500....

Just some advice that may help your internet speed itself isn't going to impact your play experience with this as it'll likely use your home network so if you have a gaming router or high end router along with networks cabled ps5 with an access point very close to your play space ideally same room and you'll have a flawless experience at 1080 60. I do this myself and I have zero lag with remote play to my mobile device on WiFi 6
