It has been a difficult year for the Xbox Series X. While we had all expected Microsoft Gaming to build on the momentum it had generated coming out of 2021 – following the releases of Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, and Microsoft Flight Simulator – delays to Redfall and Starfield scuppered that, and it left the platform with arguably one of its weakest first-party lineups since Phil Spencer took over the job as head of Xbox nine years ago.
In a time when innovation often takes centre stage, Steel Seed boldly leans into nostalgia. Developed by the indie studio Storm in a Teacup and published by
Microsoft is doing more for PS5 these days than Sony? Wow.
Like a Mythic Dawn cultist popping out of a secret room to stab the Emperor in the back, a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has shown up out of nowhere, and it’s a dagger I’ve gladly thrown myself onto for over 80 hours (and counting) in less than a week. This Unreal-tinted glasses nostalgia trip modestly modernizes one of my all-time favorite open-world RPGs and had me teaming up with Sean Bean to close shut the jaws of Oblivion, helping the God of Madness with his, um, complicated mental health issues, rising to the top of every faction like I was angling to become Cyrodiil’s Valedictorian, and violating every single person’s personal space by getting way too close to them while talking.
This is the score I would give it too. A few QoL improvements and some much needed combat enhancements particularly for the camera allow it to be appreciated in the modern era. However the performance issues persist even on performance mode.
Are we just going to admit that bugs are a gameplay feature required for all Bethesda games, and therefore they won't get docked points for it?
Very quiet year overall. Games like SF being moved out is what killed them this year.
Next year looks pretty packed so far, and SF is going to undoubtedly be one of the biggest, if not the biggest game of the year (looking at you Zelda, are you actually coming out?)
In 2023 I want to see them get their first party output on track. Keep filling GP with good titles. 2023 will be a big year for Xbox with Zenimax games finally coming to Xbox and the Activision acquisition coming to a close.
Oh, and release goldeneye already.
Xbox this year felt a lot like 2021 and 2020... Also as 2019... or 2018. Seriously, I remember that the last time I had a blast with the Xbox was in the X360 days
Same story different gen.
Definitely not a good year for exclusives but I still enjoyed my series x with plenty to play. Getting through the Witcher now for the first time is helping the exclusives wait
Xbox is too busy fighting against regulators to make 3rd party games exclusive in order to make their base feel special. They don't have time to actually work on releasing new games for the Xbox.
