Death Stranding Director’s Cut Review - Different Experience, Wasn't Quite a Good One | Zyro-EG

Note: Reviewed and captured on Steam Deck.

Jason says, "To my surprise, the game really did turn out to be more than just a glorified courier playground. In fact, this variety was unexpected between core exploration, combat, and just delivering things. It’s too bad that I have to knock the game so hard because clearly the budget did not go to making any of these things polished experiences, and instead went to paying for celebrities. Fortunately, that does pay off in better dialogue and story delivery; unfortunately, all of it that matters is pretty much at the end. But if you can put up with all that, the game will last you quite a bit of time… and you might even stumble upon some of my structures to help you out if other players maintain them. I can say this for certain, though: it was definitely a different experience even if it wasn’t quite a good one."

I got addicted to helping build roads for others and seeing how many packages I could carry without damaging them. It was fun for me because it was different.

DrDoomer971d ago

Delivering a massive haul through your own wits and planning was satisfying AF.

anast971d ago

For sure. I didn't think I was going to like it, but as I started playing I got serious about my deliveries. lol

Aloymetal971d ago

Same here, I enjoyed every second of it on PS4 and did it again on the PS5's DC.

anast971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

I got the PS5 version right out of the gate. It was worth it for sure.

BrockEmSockEm971d ago

This surprised me the most about Death Stranding. I expected the GTA style missions where I just travel all the way across the game-world to do something and then travel back, but Death Stranding somehow made it so satisfying. And later building as you go to make the trips easier felt rewarding. They say you either love/hate this game and I loved it, but I'll probably won't return to it which is okay. I really enjoy games that give me a great experience and then I move on.

anast971d ago

Yeah, there was a point when I thought to myself, "this is a sneaky good game."

ChasterMies970d ago

When I unlocked vehicles, I figured out how to get bikes and then trucks to every location. Then when I unlocked zip lines, I never again touched the ground.

anast970d ago

I didn't use the zip too much, but I used the trucks a lot especially when building roads.

I am enjoying the Dualsense features and Very Hard mode. Definitely worth the $10 for me.

anast971d ago

Probably the mention of the price and "very hard mode." It might sound stupid to include these two things together for most people.

MIDGETonSTILTS17970d ago

But I also mention the Dualsense features, which are fantastic…

chicken_in_the_corn971d ago

If it isn't a good game, why give it a good score?

SonyStyled970d ago

Review scores are an opinion given by the reviewer based off their experience with the game. It’s not a new concept.

NapalmSanctuary970d ago

He gave it a 3/4. Thats a good score no matter how you look at it.

Orchard971d ago

The game was just “ok” for me.

I ended up basically forcing myself to play through it because it had Kojimas name on the box.

Ultimately, of his 3D games, it is by far his weakest game and I wouldn’t be sad if there wasn’t a DS2 and he went onto something else.

pietro1212971d ago

Reedus kind of confirmed a sequel and honestly this is his third best 3D title

Orchard971d ago

Yeah I saw the ‘confirmation’ but it’s not a game I’ll rush out and buy day 1 again.

What would you say the best two are then? MGS 2+3?

I’d love for him to get back to MGS and Silent Hills but obviously that’s just a pipe dream thanks to Konami. I am interested to see what his new Xbox IP is and what his new rumored horror game will be like (I believe they are separate games).

Either way, still a huge Kojima fan - he’s my favorite designer in the industry.

pietro1212971d ago

Personally,I think his best titles are MGS3, Peace Walker and Death Stranding. I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s doing for MS. As much as I loved DS though I kind of don’t want a sequel. I rather see him develop another original I.P

Knushwood Butt971d ago

Dunno, I put 200 hours into this, beat it and got the Platinum.

Never even finished MGSV.

Orchard971d ago

MGSV was a good evolution of MGS for sure - but not the strongest MGS entry by a long shot.

That plus the Konami drama that resulted in it being incomplete kinda screwed us over - but it’s still a more fun playthrough than DS.

Knushwood Butt971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

I just remembered why I quit V.

I wasn't feeling it anyway, and for me it never recovered after that awful, scripted opening in the hospital, but anyway, I'd just spent about an hour trying to perfect a section in the desert, which I screwed up and died/got caught.

The game then respawned me directly in front of two wolves, which I could do nothing about and they instantly killed me.

At which point I thought **** this game and never touched it again!

NapalmSanctuary970d ago

@Orchard MGSV was the closest the series ever came to being a proper stealth game. Maybe it wasn't a good MGS game as those games went. I'll never knock a MGS series fan for not liking it cause I understand the complaints but for me it was my favorite one besides MG2:SS and MGS1

Good-Smurf970d ago (Edited 970d ago )

Off topic, as I have yet to play Death Stranding but.
MGS V have such a strong intense lengthy prologue mission.
And then everything after just falls off a cliff instead of me felt mind blowing and Impressed with scale I instead ended up felt overwhelmed with sheer confusion on the first open world mission "what am I going to do with all these barren empty part of Afghanistan?"
Did not enjoy MGS V at all there are too much down time in this game so much obvious padding to hide the fact that the game story were unfinished.
The tedious unskippable helicopter ride to and out of mission area make me stopped playing the game after the game decide that I have to go chase a wild goose to advance the story at all I stuck on Chapter 2 with tons of Extra Ops to do for a few days straight not knowing which mission advance the story so I just quit, fuck that shit.
Never finish it and still have the copy upstairs, tried to trade it in along with few other games for something else but store just won't take my MGS V.

I’d recommend the higher difficulties, those force you to dig deeper into the mechanics, and I’ve found them rewarding. Assuming you aren’t looking for an action game…. It’s more of a survival game with a great sense of atmosphere.

MichaelKnight83971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

I enjoyed DS once i really got into it i couldn't stop playing it til i beat it really was a different game compare to what's out there now that's another reason why i got so into it

People need to understand that the reason it's verified is cause it runs on proton. If anyone actually bought this thinking that an U5 game was going to run smoothly on hardware too weak for it then idk what to tell ya… well I do know what to tell ya but it isn't something nice.

Eonjay5h ago

It wouldn't put it on a consumer to know that Verified means 'it boots up'. Perhaps they should be more upffront on the product page to better mangage expectations.

Inverno4h ago

Maybe, but I've played games on my Deck that say it's verified but run like shite. If I can come to the conclusion that hardware limitations is something that will effect a games performance then so can everyone else. People don't need to be spoon fed, they need to use some common sense.

JEECE4h ago

That's why the real argument here is a broader one that the criteria for "verified" should be changed to better factor in performance. The steam deck site uses this general explanation for verified games: "The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box." Given this description, the criteria to meet "Verified" status should factor in performance. So no, it isn't that people should expect U5 games to run well on Steam Deck. It's that U5 games shouldn't meet the criteria for "Verified."

Tacoboto4h ago

It's not like Valve produces a more powerful unit themselves that can run this game in an acceptable way (if reports are as bad as the headline suggests).

Deck Verified should mean and imply that it will not just open but run in that acceptable way on the one hardware they make where that label is of any relevance. And for future hardware that is more powerful, or new OEMs, that label will mean that the game not only runs, but will run better than the baseline.

FPS_D3TH4h ago

How is it the consumers fault for not looking deeper into this sort of technicality. This is still misleading the consumer.

Profchaos2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

There seems to be a misconception about what the deck is capably of.

Not sure what people expect its a portable PC did people expect it to run every new PC game for the next decade. It's not a bespoke console where Devs will target that SKU and optimise for it specifically the thing about pc gaming is that eventually you'll be forced to upgrade or be left behind.

The steam deck hardware was fantastic for running last gen games but modern games are now starting to push into a new level of requirements (finally!!!).

I think the verification system for the deck does need an overhaul though as it's not the first game to be approved which clearly shouldn't

CrashMania2h ago

Yeah exactly, it's a PS4ish level device, dunno what people expect tbh.

Minecraft splitscreen mod comes to Steam Deck and it might be possible in other games too

Playing Minecraft splitscreen on the Steam Deck is possible now, thanks to this script that automates everything for you.

I claimed it yesterday from Steam but I find it odd that I still cannot claim it through my XB. It's supposed to be free to keep there as well.

Profchaos8d ago

I couldn't get it on Xbox either

anast9d ago

It's a 2014 game so it should work well on this device, I would grab asap if I had a Steam Deck.

Scissorman8d ago

It says its 2.99 not free and I'm on the Steam Deck...what am I missing?

DaReapa8d ago

"Metro 2033 Redux is currently available to claim for free on Steam Deck and PC. But, to get the game for free, you must claim it before 8AM PT/11AM ET/4PM BST on April 16th."

Miacosa8d ago

Don't need a Steam Deck to get this deal.

Profchaos8d ago

Do we really need the clickbait title just say metro 2033 Redux is free

shadowhaxor8d ago

Exactly. This crap is what gives gaming journalism a bad name.

Snookies128d ago

Look at what site it comes from. That's why.
