Embracer Group enters into agreement to acquire IP rights to LOTR & Hobbit literary works by Tolkien

Embracer Group AB (”Embracer”), through its wholly owned subsidiary Freemode, has entered into an agreement to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, which owns a vast intellectual property catalogue and worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions relating to the iconic fantasy literary works The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Embracer are literally buying up tons of companies every few months. Crazy.

darthv72651d ago

Add in LRG and Tatsujin (Toaplan)... they got their hands in cookie jars around the world.

darthv72651d ago

...and Koei Tecmo perhaps

MadLad651d ago (Edited 651d ago )

This LOTR acquisition is really out of the blue but, as far as games go, they've basically stated they're not looking to make many one hundred million dollar AAA projects.
I doubt they'll go after big name AAA publishing houses any time soon.

Who is to say though? Like I said, this latest acquisition was out of nowhere. Maybe they're ramping up their visions.

Profchaos651d ago (Edited 651d ago )

Woah they seem to care about quality to founded by self professed nerds instead of bean counters I think we're in safe hands

Sgt_Slaughter651d ago

They also acquired Limited Run Games, they are on another rampage

GoodGuy09651d ago

Embracer getting stronger and stronger lol.

gamer7804651d ago

Hopefully they don’t screw it up like Amazon

MadLad651d ago

Amazon know nothing about game development, grabbed a handful of industry vets to run unproven studios and thought gold would happen.
Many couldn't even manage to bring a game to market.

Embracer is what happens when a bunch of rich game nerds decide to start a company. Seems like they have a good understanding of the teams they buy, their IP, and what changes need to happen for them to thrive.
They got 3D Realms back on their feet. They knew to get Randy Pitchford out of the spotlight when they acquired Gearbox, even though he started the company.
People get worried when people start buying up the industry, but Embracer is one of just a couple companies that don't currently worry me when doing so.

If nothing else, every developer and IP they buy is one that doesn't go to Tencent and EPIC, so that can only be a net positive.

gamer7804650d ago

You are right but I was referring to the most expensive train wreck of a tv show to ever be created. Rings of power

MadLad650d ago

I couldn't say there.
As far as I know, this is Embracer's first acquisition where they now have a large, majorly known IP that they could viably make use of in mediums outside of videogames.

They've been doing well, both financially and for their consumers, in the videogame space. Hopefully that can be said the same if they really are attempting to get into the film and TV market.

Hope SH2 gets more polish before release.

I’m not paying $94 CAD for what they’ve shown me. Looks rough as sin.

Ive seen better lip syncing during a Punch and Judy show

Sonic188111m ago(Edited 4m ago)

This looks terrible. Capcom should have done the remake 😂 The animations and gameplay looks stiff.

We can hope. Especially if the rumors of Cillian Murphy and Alaska are true.

RaidenBlack4h ago

That'd be too good if true.
But Henderson also leaked that next Far Cry setting was targeting some asian island.

Relientk776h ago

Assassin's Creed Hexe is what I wanna hear about most. Yes I wanna play as a witch with magic during the 16 century witch trials in Germany (as per rumors). Sign me up

Huey_My_D_Long6h ago

Yeah, Hex sounds amazing to me as well, and I've been playing since AC 1. I'm real curious how are they gonna fit the magic into the game, maybe in similar way the dlc introduced gods and god abilities. but I love that I've heard its gonna have a horror vibe.

Garethvk6h ago

Hopefully it is full of good stuff.

RaidenBlack3h ago

The studio just completed Avatar and busy with Outlaws and also got their F2P Heartland cancelled ... IMO, Division 3 will surely come but it'll take more time.
I'd be most thrilled if Ubisoft greenlits a sequel or at least a remake of the studio's first game i.e World in Conflict

anast2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

I would get hyped about Hexe. If the rumors are true, UBI might get a gold edition purchase out of me.

Demetrius6h ago

Hopefully gameplay of ac shadows or star wars outlaws, if they finally announce the new far cry I'm definitely getting that, far cry still fun af and gorgeous games, yeah ubisoft has their faults but atleast they're not copying souls like games their titles still have identity

neutralgamer19924h ago

We will definitely see gameplay for star wars and AC. Farcry let's see

OtterX5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I'm going to be an outlier amongst the rest of these comments.... give us something NEW! I'm pretty burnt out on Ubisoft franchises, unless you're giving us a new Rayman game!

*Edit - imagine what they could do with a Rayman 3D game in this day and age. I say now is the time to revisit the series.

RaidenBlack3h ago

Would love a AAA PoP too or a back to roots Ghost Recon (none of the open world stuff)

MeatyUrologist3h ago

Hell yes! Ghost recon in the style of the originals with real consequences, permanent and all!

Garethvk5h ago

Beyond Good and Evil 2: It is coming really; we promise.

OtterX5h ago

Their microtransaction monetization scheme on it will lie somewhere between good and evil!

Haha JK.... it'll be completely evil. 🙃
