WTMG's Jordan Hawes: "At the end of the day, XEL is a game that is competent, has some good ideas, and enough gameplay elements to keep you playing. The sound design is well done and I do enjoy the simplistic art direction and its bright, popping color pallet. Unfortunately, it’s a game that just needed more time in the oven to hammer out the bugs and glitches that really hold this back. There are some good ideas here, but the annoyances almost outweighed what it does do well."
Review - For the good - the visuals, audio, navigation of paths, combat moments - there are tens of things in XEL that will hold you back.
Neil writes: "If you're in need of some Zelda-like adventuring in your Xbox life, you'd do well to pick up the newly released XEL"
Me: Mom can we buy Zelda?
Mom: We have Zelda at home.
Zelda at home:
so, basically, "if you're looking for actual good games but found that you made a huge mistake by buying an xbox... well, you can play these sub-par games instead and pretend you're playing something great" lol
There has never been a shortage of Zelda-like titles, and for good reason - they're usually fun, charming, and riveting. However, some almost become too reliant on the nostalgia and aesthetic, providing a false promise and a disappointing venture into what otherwise could have been a promising experience in the right hands. Unfortunately, XEL finds itself in that camp, providing a game that more often than not loses its soul, feeling careless in the process.
