Gotham Knights Looks Like a Co-Op Batman: Arkham Knight, and That's OK

The new Gotham Knights showcase revealed more about how the game plays, and the similarities to Batman: Arkham Knight are hard to ignore.

I, uh, I mean did you expect anything different from an Arkham game?

antikbaka1083d ago

no, but i didn't expect it to be worse either

Yi-Long1083d ago

Except it’s not an Arkham game. Hence why they dropped the Arkham and this is called Gotham Knights

Not sure how to feel about this game. The announcement was pretty underwhelming when they showed the gameplay/concept. I love the Arkham games because they were well-made SP action adventures, and this seemed to focus more on the MP co-op aspect. Graphically it didn’t impress, arguably looking worse than Arkham Knight, but obviously Arkham Knight looked amazing, and still does. I’m glad to read they dropped the development for last-gen consoles so they can focus on current-gen.

Really wish they would have just made another SP focused game though, either a follow-up to Knight, or taking it into the (near-) future for Arkham Beyond.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this literally take place after Arkham Knight?

I mean from what I saw it sort of walks like a duck and quack likes a duck...

I didn't see anything that gave the impression that it's radically different or would be radically different from the Arkham games... sans visuals and swapping out mechanics to glide around the city.

So there's co-op, not like we haven't seen the Arkham games have an AI controlled partner. Y'know, like Knightwing and Batman taking on Killer Croc in the Arkham Knight DLC?

In fact, why is everyone freaking out about co-op ruining a single player experience? Plenty of games that introduce co-op pull off a decent single player campaign.

The issue is both WB Montreal (the ones making this and Arkham Origins dev) and Rocksteady (the other Batman games) are both trying to get into the on-going / co-op / service based world because EVERYONE is trying to get a service game because it's an ongoing cash-cow if done right, which is understandable because businesses want and need money to continue to thrive / budget for more games / pay developers.

But you also have to be realistic as well. Why put two teams on similar projects (2 player co-op / 4 player co-op) within the same genre, within the same Universe? It's like they didn't learn anything from Square and Avengers. Even if Suicide Squad turns out to be good, unless it gets rave reviews, its success now depends on Gotham Knights.

The good about the game is it looks like more "Arkham Knight" which is fine, as there are millions of people who enjoy those games. And hopefully, the co-op is well implemented and doesn't take away from the story and pacing of the game.

The bad is it looks like more Arkham Knight.....and that game was released back in 2015...so this is the evolution they have after up to 7 years of development..... And the revolution was let's add one more player into the mix.

It’s not a Arkham game nor does it take place in that universe. The upcoming Suicide Squad is set in the same universe as the Arkham games

All I want is another Batman trilogy, there are so many great batman stories to tell.

SoulWarrior1083d ago

This just looks drab, 7 years on from Arkham Knight and we get what looks like a boring live service co-op game.

SDuck1083d ago

Game looks dumb. Out of all combat aspects of the Arkham series, they went and focused on the unrealistic ping pong around the field hitting each enemy. They decided to make Red Hood bulky as hell and give him nonsensical mystical powers even though those are the hated changes in the comics to his character.

Game looks like a horrible cash grab capitalizing on a beloved franchise of mine (the Robins) and I cannot ignore it

neomahi1083d ago

Not really. It looks incredibly boring

Lol, oh boy. I just bought the Dragon Quest Builders 2 Season Pass DLC last week, despite not owning the game on Playstation. I know it's a risk we are accepting, but it's just funny that the announcement of removal comes 1 week after buying. Oh well. Looks like I'll be buying the game. Again. I owned it on Switch, but my kids wanted to play multiplayer across the PS4 and PS5.

Gotham Knights was very bland. Losing the Dragon Quest games though is a different story.

I downloaded Gotham knights months ago but never played it. I guess I'll get it for £3.99 on PC and free memory up on PS5

Luc20222d ago

Correction. Cd keys have it for £1.99

LBP3 leaving give me hopes that a remastered trilogy is coming.

Gotham Knights Would've Succeeded Without The Arkham Games

Ahmed from eXputer: "Gotham Knights is considered a critical failure by Batman fans, but I think it's pretty good without comparing it with the Arkham games."

Gaming4Life1981347d ago

When it came to gamepass I thought it couldn't be as bad as people said it was. I was wrong cause it's terrible and feels very generic. Maybe it needed more development time and no live service crap.

CrimsonWing69346d ago

What was the live service crap?

neutralgamer1992347d ago

It’s an average game and no matter how we spin it it would have still been an average game. Publishers chasing live service most fault but if it happens with natural growth it could happen. Look at helldivers 2 and than look at suicide squad. You have Harry Potter game generating 1 billion but WB still want to chase live service and they want future games from their studios to focus on GAAS
