Xbox Rules, But PS3 Must Survive

From OXCGN:

"I can almost hear the the howls of "traitor!" from Xbots now, and the PS3 fanboy missionaries licking their lips in anticipation of a possible convert. For a writer on an Xbox site to say "the PS3 must survive" may seem unusual, but that's exactly what I'm saying and I have my reasons.

Even if you are a die-hard Sony fanboy, you have to admit things aren't going as smoothly as they did for the PS2 (which is often still outselling the PS3).

So, as someone cheering for the 360 I should hope that the Sony Playstation brand dies a painful death right? Then the Xbox would get all the games (except for Wii's mostly shovelware type games) and not miss out on titles like MGS4 or Uncharted.

Wrong."

Before Sony fans go Ape on this, try READING it first, it's not a Xbot PS3 bashing, it's a decent article looking at the NEED for all platforms if the industry is to survive and prosper.

gaminoz5655d ago

They've started with the reports already...READ THE ARTICLE YOU TWITS.

Actually it would suck if we didn't have a choice of consoles. I like a bit of difference. I know Sony isn't doing well now, but Xbox didn't do that well the first gen and so I'm sure Sony will recover.

Nathan Drake5655d ago

Don't worry,I remember reading your MGS4 review so I know for a fact that you're not an idiotic gamer running a website.

Immortal Kaim5655d ago

Yeah, I remember reading the MGS4 review on an Xbox site, I thought what the hell, we need more of this acceptance between platform specific websites.

I tried looking on the site but I can't find that MGS4 review....

Genesis55655d ago

I totally agree that competetion is the life blood of inovation this is a well written articulate article. The thing I don't agree with is the way most MS supporting journalist are on the smear campaign against Sony by bending facts and dodging actual sales figures that cleary show the PS3 is still strong and healthy tracking at the same sales rate as the 360 after 2 years.

Danja5655d ago

I agree competition is good for the industry , just look at the all the great games and features we've been getting this gen...

Competition = better services to us gamers..XD

BrianC62345655d ago

Everyone should check out The Hiphopgamer. He has a great show up now. He likes both systems and even mentioned the 360 has only sold around 100,000 more consoles than Sony this year. It's funny how the media finds one minor issue and goes on the attack of Sony. What in the world did Sony ever do to all these people?

Also, on The Hiphopgamer he went to a Gamestop and videotaped a Gamestop employee trying to talk him into buying a 360 over a PS3. He wanted to prove a point that a lot of people are pushing the 360 when really they should sell the console the customer wants.

Traveler5655d ago

It was a great article. Competition is good. I am enjoying this generation more than any other and a large part of that is the stiff competition between the PS3 and 360. Personally, I think they are both exceptional game consoles and I hope they both do well this generation. So far I think they are. Now if they could only manage to beat that arrogant little Wii...

BWS19825655d ago

awesome, but even though this article was quite unbiased, it was NOT void of bias. This report speaks as though the last 2 years Sony's bordered on bankruptcy and failure, and the only place I see that drivel is out of fanboys, which this author denies himself of being. With the reports I keep seeing, per day since release, the PS3 has sold, _worldwide_, more units than the 360 last time I saw all the calculations. What I mean is that since the PS3 was released, the basic math shows it's sold more in the time it's been out in relative comparison to the 3+ years 360 has been out. Search my posts, I'm about as neutral as a gamer you'll find, and fanboys irritate the hell out of me, but one bad month of sales does not spell the doom of a console. Nobody seems to step back and look at the big picture. All 3 consoles are doing relatively well (Wii a bit more), with ebb and flowing going on month to month. The "experts" this article called upon for support were questionable at best as far as neutrality, I have no clue where this crap comes from, I thought we all had a thorough understanding that the smear campaigns from fanboys of any side were to be ignored. Nobody's a Titanic, no one's sinking, failing, or otherwise watching any empire crumble around them. Stop twisting numbers, stop spinning conjecture and wild guesses, and utilize some logic.

People continually forget Sony is supporting THREE systems right now, not 1. They still have last gen's winner on the playing field, with tens of millions of them yet to convert (do the math, last gen had like 150 million users combined, this gen is far from it, the majority have NOT upgraded yet)...Is it clicking yet? Or is the hatred still overwhelming? The economy is struggling, not Sony. A major price cut always spurs sales, the highest priced contender WILL struggle, economics 101....world wide sales are very telling, if Sony DID cut the price this fall, that would be a larger sign of struggle. What they DID do was include more hard drive for the same price. Sony's not on top in many lights, that is true, but rampant hatred and viral leaps in logic must halt to good ol' fashioned reasoning.

EVOLVED5655d ago

Hopefully apple does get involved in the console war. I would like to see more american corp. getting involved. the more systems, the more games the more for me.

Real Gambler5655d ago

I totally agree we need competition. We are lucky all 3 consoles are there to stay.

Only little thing I would say is wrong is: "If Microsoft was alone in the powerful console stakes there is no way the price would have gone down. Even Sony fanboys would have been buying it."

I'm not 100% sure Sony's boys would have bought a 360 if there was no PS3 on the market. By the time it came out, it was obvious they had major problems with the hardware. Now, with the PS3 selling for $600, I do think most "gamers" may have went for a PC. After all, if you're not in a rush, most games come up for it anyway. And if you were in for the BluRay, then they may have bought the Wii and a bluray player. So not so sure the market would have shifted that much for the 360.

Anyway, overall, yep, competition is good for us!

SL1M DADDY5654d ago

To all the journalists that enjoy slanting the news and generating FUD for hits, try coming up with something more substantial. The PS3 has sold nearly as much if not more than the 360 this year and outsold the 360 last year entirely world wide. Mediacreate and NPD have proven this as well as the financial reports of both Sony and MS. These reports are not hidden on the web but can be accessed by all. Now, if you were a true journalist, you would have reported the full aspect and listed the numbers and then made your statements but at that time you would have had to retract all your thoughts on how the PS3 is actually doing since the numbers do not depict the same FUD-smeared sentiment that you are portraying in your article.

It's sad these days but so many people would rather post up a FUD filled article in hopes of getting hits than actually post up truth and rely on honor and integrity to get their website where it needs to be. Simply pathetic.

TheDude2dot05654d ago

Where do you live that PS2 is outselling PS3? I haven't seen that at all.

BWS19825653d ago

fanboy drones. Keep it up, the average intelligence-caliber human beings need myopic, thought-voided, idiots like you who disagree for the sake of not liking the truth at hand. Good gawd.

Man up if you can prove me wrong. If not, enjoy your pathetic, phantom-laden usage of this site and all the factual contributions that make you shake in anger. Oops, too many syllables...

While we need all three major players to continue to keep their heads above water in order to provide the consumer with better games and better offers to want our business, the problem I see is how much support is going to be offered by any of them in a few years time?

Sony has managed to stick to their word in relation to the PS2 still selling today and making games for it, Nintendo however I can see will come out with some new format and barely make it bw for Wii users.

I think all these companies need to continue to pump life into their own systems, even when a new one comes onto the horizon if they want a loyal fanbase.

gaminoz5655d ago

TOTALLY AGREE....at least with reverse compatibility. I can't understand why my PS3 dropped that ability. My 360 plays plenty of backwards compatible games but not my PS3...WTF?

Wii still plays all my GCN games!

Jackthepwnsaur5655d ago (Edited 5655d ago )

Sony Dropped BC on the PS2 so that the PS3 can sell for $400. Just because its gone doesnt mean its not coming back. Sony is eventually going to put PS2 BC into the PS3 by Software, its immenent, the thing is, when will they update it. There were rumors out there that Sony was going to put BC on the recent firmware update but they pulled it for unknown reasons.

gaminoz5655d ago

Well they should do it NOW. They really need the boost.

Cajun Chicken5655d ago

I know at least 6 people that will go out and buy a PS3 if BC is put back in, instead of bigger hardrives in the new models, they should of had an 80gb HDD with the PS2 components in.

Traveler5655d ago

I agree, backwards compatibility is important. My PS3 does have BC and I am really glad that it does, since there are many older PS2 games that I still enjoy playing. It's funny that if you are buying a console today the 360 has better backwards compatibility with last generation games than the currently available PS3s. I would have never guessed that would be the case.

But yes, I also think it is important for console makers to support their consoles well into the lifespan of the following console and both Sony and Microsoft have stated their intentions to do so with their current consoles (PS3 and 360).

Immortal Kaim5655d ago

Very good points, BC is an important feature (for me personally). If BC was added it would probably be 'the straw that broke the camels back' and force my hand in finally getting a PS3, that or a significant price drop. :)

Rhoic5655d ago

That's the only reason why I haven't bought a PS3 yet.. I have about 30 PS2 games sitting here and my PS2 disc drive doesn't read anything, anymore.. Yay for the early versions of the PS2 that broke down like crazy.

GOD OF WAR 3
UNCHARTED 2
KILLZONE 2
TEAM ICO PROJECT

gaminoz5655d ago

I still think they'll need a price cut though. Resistance 2 didn't sell that amazingly well according to the figures in the article.

Still those are some possibly great games! (I say possibly only because we've not played them yet!)

Firstkn1ghT5655d ago (Edited 5655d ago )

JUST WAIT TILL LBP, SOCOM, MOTORSTORM 2, AND RESISTANCE 2 COMES OUT AND IT'S OVER FOR THE 360!!!!!!

Oh wait....*

cellypower5655d ago

Who said it was over for the 360 when LBP, SOCOM, MOTORSTORM 2, AND RESISTANCE 2 came out? Why does this have to always be a sales war!

La Chance5655d ago (Edited 5655d ago )

Please stop.Youre just making your fellow PS3 diehards look even more stupid.

Do you realize how stupid and ridiculous you guys look and sound now that its obvious to the whole world that you guys were just running your mouth and all the "sony will rule" was nothing more than just pure idiotic fanboy dreams.

You guys were already saying things like that at the beginning of the year....and now youre startng all over again just to start making excuses again when you see that in 2009 that nothing has changed for Sony.

Do you really want to look like an idiot again by the end of 2009 ?

Im sure you dont so in that case dont go ahead doing the same thing you guys did in 2008.

You guys are one huge joke now that "Sony's year" is coming to an end.

This year should be a lesson to you guys.

@CELLYPOWERr on top : YOU WERE THE GUYS SAYING THAT ! You are the guys who started the "just wait for this" , "just wait for that".

Guess what ? Well the wait is over.

Funny how sony fanboys all of a sudden cant remember anything.Remember the 360 was supposed to die in 2008.We had around about 5 articles a day about how the 360 was going to die a slow painful death confronted with the all mighty PS3.

Traveler5655d ago

Yeah, it's true, there was a lot of talk about the 360 dying against the PS3 onslaught and I think it is pretty ridiculous to try and deny it now. I don't understand the mentality of people who want either console to die. Good thing is, neither console is in danger of dying and anybody who thinks otherwise is simply out of touch.

"So go ahead and cheer the 360 or the Ps3, but always keep in mind that we need both Microsoft and Sony to fight each other to get the best out of gaming."

It'll force Sony to bring the price of the PS3 down in order to compete. There is no more "Ps3 has no games" argument because it does.

Jackthepwnsaur5655d ago

not to mention, competition pushes Sony to make the PSN better.

Godem5655d ago

If there wasn't competition we would be playing SNES style games!

Movie Tie-In Games And How They Were All The Rage Back In The Day

Movie tie-in games were all the rage during the '90s and at their peak in the 2000s. Today, there are barely any around.

It’s Time for Sony to Bring Back Killzone and Resistance

Sony is in the middle of an FPS crisis, but bringing back two much-loved PlayStation shooters could easily be the solution.

shinoff21833d ago

I'd rather them focus on a rpg. Shooters can wait

just_looken3d ago

We have alot of rpg's but only cod for a AAA first person shooter unless you toss in xdefient but that is still fixing 2yr old beta issues.

We need more AAA fps games then rpg's

shinoff21833d ago

Yea right. Theirs so many shooters on the market.

just_looken2d ago

@shin

Name 3 AAA fps games coming out this year

Cacabunga2d ago

I want Killzone yea, but as a gaas no buy!

Cacabunga2d ago

Yes we need some new FPS experiences.. COD is just not engaging enough. We want a Killzone back to the roots, not a Shadow Fall again..

There's tons of RPG in the market too...what's your point exactly.

RaidenBlack2d ago

No Killzone or Resistance or Factions for you ... only Concord & FairGame$

Ironmike2d ago

No more rpg for a while would love a new resistance though

DarXyde2d ago

Agree on preferring RPGs though at this exact moment, it would be great to see more horror games. Another reason why Japan Studio closing is just tragic. Loved Siren.

just_looken2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Fuck jim ryan japan studio did so much and helped alot with ports/localization

If they were around bloodborn would be possible like how they helped with demon souls ps4 finial fantasy port.

Horror games would be nice but the jim ryan axe job helped alot in killing playstation dev numbers/freedom and increased regulation with the new censorship crap.

1Victor2d ago

If Sony is bringing back a old shooter I would prefer Warhawk or better yet Starhawk

Rynxie2d ago

No thanks. Resistance and killzone were my all time favorite fps games. I completely dominated those games. I met good people, had a ton of fun and have a lot of fond memories. I don't want them to bring back these games, unless they tackle the cheating epidemic. I know I will absolutely hate these games, if I was to play them now, with all the effing cheating going on in fps games.

Psychonaut852d ago

Bro the market is oversaturated with quality RPGs AND bloated shitty RPGs already.

Inverno3d ago

I honestly don't think we'll be seeing these anytime soon, if ever. Insomniac is officially on Marvel duty since it seems that all they're working on based off the leaks, and Horizon is more of what the casuals want these days. And I now I'll get a bunch of disagrees, but keep in mind that Resistance last got a game on the PS3 (2011) and Killzone was a launch title for the PS4 (2013). 10 years is a long time to make a game, if had any interest they would've done it by now, add InFamous to that list.

just_looken3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Your right except the dates killzone mercenary was on ps vita 2013 same with resistance burning skies back in 2012

Good-Smurf3d ago

Both of those games are either made by smaller B team or completely different developer.
Killzone Mercenary developed by Guerilla Cambridge which is now defunct.
Resistamce Burning Skies wasn't made by Insomniac but by Nihilistic Software also defunct after the failure of CoD Black Ops Declassified.

just_looken2d ago

@good i know i never said they were

I mentioned them as they were the last games under that ip well killzone was last on ps4 but still even though they are different devs they led to the lose of the ip.

I highly doubt they made up for there budget cost even killzone on ps4 had low sales for such a large ip at the time.

shinoff21833d ago

Infamous should atleast get remastered. I'd be cool with that

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH3d ago

Resistance 3 turned me off to the series but I’d love a reboot. KillZone I think can stay dead. Give me a new Resistance like 1or 2 and I’ll be happy.

JEECE3d ago

Except Resistance 1 and 3 were far more similar, 2 was the outlier. 3 was a great return to form after 2 changed so many things from the first game.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH3d ago

I didn’t like 3 and I didn’t find it similar to the first game.

Moegooner3d ago

2 was the best resistance game.

Michiel19892d ago

agreed, the co-op was my fav in 2

Michiel19892d ago

I'll keep saying it, have Bungie make a new resistance game, a match made in heaven. Although I imagine Bungie would be too proud to take over an existing IP.

Huey_My_D_Long3d ago

I honestly never cared or liked killzone. Huge resistance fan though. I remember so many nights playing melee only on USS Lexington, and I like the alt history vibe.

InUrFoxHole2d ago

Liked KZ more but both those games are better than MAG

Huey_My_D_Long2d ago

Facts.
Since I'm down memory lane, I also wish for remaster of Warhawk.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx3d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga2d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken3d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken3d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing693d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno3d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing693d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel19892d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing691d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel19891d 15h ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 23h ago

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE3d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm233d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE1d 11h ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde2d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE1d 11h ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers3d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm233d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
