The overwhelming feeling I had in my time with Expeditions: Rome is that it's perfectly average.
"Logic Artists and THQ today announced with great delight and thrill that the "Death or Glory" DLC is now available for their ancient Rome-themed Strategy/RPG “Expeditions: Rome".- THQ and Logic Artists.
WTMG's Thomas Medina: "Expeditions: Rome is a great game that does exactly what it sets out to do. It’s a CRPG set during Ancient Rome focusing on authenticity and balancing RPG mechanics with hardcore strategy mechanics. A balance it strikes well, with a well written story and a polished Roman Legion customization and battle system. You really are raising an army, and then waging war on your enemies. And the fact that you have an end goal through it all provides focus and drive for the campaign. You’re always moving forward, waging war on the enemies of now, in order to return to Rome bathed in the glory of victory. You will bring glory to Rome and you will have your revenge on those who wronged you. And it’s totally up to you how that all plays out. "
IGN writes:
Between the tough but engaging tactical battles, a robust campaign system, uncommonly strong plot and characters, and the chance to live through so much of one of the most fascinating periods in all of history, Expeditions: Rome is one of the better tactical RPGs of the last several years. It can feel weighed down at times by all the systems it tries to cram in, and the mass combat remains a vexing enigma that no tooltip or tutorial can properly explain. But with interesting random events, meaningful strategic choices, and plenty of brain-bending smaller-scale scenarios to keep things fresh, that can be mostly forgiven. These developers deserve a Roman triumph.
