Best RPG of 2021

VGChartz's Chinh Tran: "If you were a fan of RPG Games in 2021, you definitely wanted to own a Nintendo Switch. Three of the four shortlisted games are console exclusive to Nintendo's hybrid system, each offering a rich RPG experience at home or on the go. Bravely Default II continued the series' run of strong games dating back to 2012; Monster Hunter Rise again proved that Capcom has a wildly enjoyable RPG series on its hands that can consistently top lists and the charts; Shin Megami Tensei V, also by Capcom, took players through a demon-fusing adventure with new abilities; then finally there was Tales of Arise, which was yet another strong entry in the long-running RPG series and, for many, it's best so far."

I'm 40 hours in Tales of Arise, amazing game, well deserved. I'm a Monster Hunter fan, but I'm giving Tales an edge for this one myself: Rise is a great game but it lacks a little bit of content.

I didn't play SMTV though, I think it might be a valid contender.

phoenixwing1197d ago

The fact tales is the one to beat when talking about best jrpg that year shows how far the series has come along

coolbeans1196d ago

I'm so tempted to play Arise. SMTV has been given a lot of fanfare too. It probably missed the runner-up spot by a hair (voting influence is split 50/50 between staff & community).

Flawlessmic1197d ago

Rales of arise hands down!!

Was the first one in the series iv have played before but thoroughly enjoyed it!

Ninver1196d ago (Edited 1196d ago )

Fascinating! I've never played this so called "Rales of arise" before. Care to share your experiences and a review?

Yui_Suzumiya1197d ago

Tales of Arise, Persona 5 Strikers, Shin Megami Tensei V

coolbeans1196d ago

A pretty stacked year for JRPGs.

108 hours unknown difficulty, in middle of last dungeon. Now im back to exploring, just found a new island i didnt know existed!I got alot of bosses to find. This game is one of the best jrpgs made, hands down.

Rise is a good get for me since I didn't trust the riding/fighting with monsters gimmick to be enjoyable. Now I can check it out

Goosejuice316d ago

Rise is a very good game. The monster riding thing is neat and can help quite a bit with breaking parts off.

Einhander1972316d ago

They also added a bunch of games as part of Days of Play

Six PSVr 2 games

Before Your Eyes
Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord - Frozen Empire
Synth Riders
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 1
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2
Walkabout Mini Golf

And three PS2 games

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Tomb Raider: Legend

The three PS2 games have full emulation support including save states and and a rewind function as well as full button mapping, 4 different graphical modes and added trophy support.

InUrFoxHole316d ago

Rise is the only one I find interesting but a good list

Shane Kim316d ago

Man, Crusader Kings and Anno are damn epic. You should give them a try.

darthv72316d ago

I am hopeful that with each passing entry of PS1/2 games that get released on +... they will make it so you can use your own discs to download the updated and compatible version for the PS4/5. Like what XB does with its BC games.

bloop315d ago

Ghosthunter!! Wow!! Now there's a blast from the past!! One of those strange games where I remember it so vividly yet can't remember a single thing about it.

I have had my eye on Monster Hunter Rise for a while now, so big win here.

crazyCoconuts316d ago

So PS has quietly added PSVR2 games to Premium!
Seems to go beyond Days of Play.
Good discount on upgrading to premium right now, so I'll bite for the VR titles alone.

Profchaos316d ago

This was well needed as a psvr2 owner looking at psvr2 games to buy it can be a total crapshoot if they bare going to be any good or even work properly sonits nice to see them finally come to PS plus as a way to try a wider variety of games I may not have touched out of worry there was a problem with it

jznrpg316d ago

Some good games in there and some I haven’t played yet

Abnor_Mal316d ago

Glad that Kayak VR is part of premium, now I can try it, not a game that I wanted to buy to be honest.

I just recently bought Monster Hunter Rise, but haven’t started it yet.

What ever happened to premium getting the PS2 game G-Police?

darthv72316d ago

And this is why I like sub services as you dont know if you like something until you try it. Hence, the 'try before you buy' approach is not all bad.

Abnor_Mal316d ago (Edited 316d ago )

I have no intention of buying the game, never did. I do want to see the graphics since that’s what I was hearing being talked about when it first came out.

I get the whole idea of try before you buy, I’m not opposed to that, or Gamepass/subscriptions in general.

But when a large section of a platforms gaming community ops for subscriptions instead of buying their games out right, we see where that leads to with paltry sales on the platform for those same games.

You may be an exception compared to many others who out right say if a game is not on a sub service they will not buy the game. Or since game A is on a sub service then game B or any other game should be on a sub service. That’s when the industry suffers as a whole.

Profchaos316d ago

We got g police about two months ago I've got it loaded on my console now but it was on PS1 I never knew there was a PS2 version

darthv72316d ago

There is no PS2 version of G Police.

Abnor_Mal316d ago

Yea my bad, I said PS2 by accident. I really don’t remember seeing it on offer and only remember seeing people talk about it. Now I’m going to have to check my backlog of plus games.
