The rating part is new but the performance promise is old.
I doubt how well it'll lock to 60 at 4K with RT GI enabled given how taxing it was on PC specs. And its Exodus!
If they're optimizing it for that target ... they have to optimize like crazy ... like really crazy.
I suppose it'll be dynamic 4K with DRS, targeting the 60fps ceiling.
edit: Its ambitious but it'll be super interesting if they can pull it off.

littletad1464d ago

"Target 60 fps" is the new BS marketing tool hidden in 4k/60. I'll wait until digital foundry lays the results as per usual.

I_am_Batman1464d ago (Edited 1464d ago )

Talking about target frame rate is actually closer to reality than talking about a locked frame rate. Developers target a frame rate which determines the available render budget (the time to render each frame). A 60 fps target gives you a render budget of ~17 milliseconds (one sixtieth of a second).

Profiling tools are used to understand exactly how the render budget is being used and optimisations are made to stay within this budget as much as possible. A cap is added to prevent the frame rate from exeeding the target, which would otherwise cause screen tearing.

Considering games are dynamic there isn't really a way to guarantee that you'll never see a frame drop except for using very conservative targets. The downside of that approach would be that you're leaving a lot of your render budget unused most of the time.

TLDR: Using the 'target' terminology is the opposite of marketing bs. It's a much more honest representation of how game development works.

Or just play it and have fun. DF is just a game ruining site, making you look for things you'd never notice and never used to care about.

Zeref1463d ago

I mean as long as it isn't consistently under 50 fps and at 60fps most of the time, i consider it a W. Especially with VRR you won't even notice the dips.

jukins1464d ago

Of course it won't match equipment that costs several times more BUT i think what they'll be able to achieve will be very impressive given the limits

Profchaos1464d ago

There was talk of significant engine optimisation for these enhanced versions even the PC will receive these updated configurations. Just speculating but because this game was one of the first games to reduce rtx support a few years back it wasn't optimised to the extent that games in 2021 are.

There could be more optimisation applied to reach 4k 60 I can't see it but there a possibility.

buffig1464d ago

Yeah. They said it's based on a whole new RT engine. I'd expect hugely different performance

Babadook71464d ago

Well, as we’ve seen every gen including the current one, consoles punch well above their weight vs equivalent pc hardware.

Tapani1463d ago

I’ve only seen consoles ”punch above their weight” (whatever that means in technical terms) in exclusive titles. In 3rd party multiplat titles they will perform exactly like their PC components they have. PS5’s 36 CUs and Series X 52 CUs will perform like 6600xt and 6700xt (or worse). They are powerlimited and spec limited. PC is more complicated and games never work (they need more setting up etc.) as straightforward, but the hardware specs cannot simply be surpassed. Optimizations Developers do for RDNA2.0 will work on their PC counterpart chips equally well. IO throughput can help, but then again PCs can do that as well with SAM and upcoming optimizations.

Babadook71463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

@Tapani

PC rarely gets up to console performance in like for like situations.

Take Valhalla (11:15 mark the performance gets compared)

https://youtu.be/m9LgfTr517...

Many more examples exist that show the same thing.

Also ps5 beats the xsx generally so that refutes your other point.

seanpitt231463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

These new consoles are monster killaz... especially with the new dls equivalent from AMD

RaidenBlack1463d ago

AMD's DLSS equivalent, FidelityFX Super Resolution, hasn't even been fully developed by AMD yet.
Nobody knows how efficient and capable it is.
Mind you Nvidia's DLSS was pretty lackluster at ver.1.0.
2.0 DLSS is when it got a little more acceptable.

somethingcool871463d ago

+1 this
Seeing how 3080 struggled when RT is turned on, it wouldn't be realistic to expect native 4k with RT on. But hopefully they will have an option to toggle it on/off.

Tapani1463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

3080 works OK with 1080p RT and DLSS, that's a solid 60fps on all games. Some games hover around 60 at 1440p. The optimizations for RT are going to be the key this gen. As always, first implementation of the tech is going to be much slower compared to new ones where devs find ways to get the same effects work faster. It's kind of like AA, first you brute force it, then you find a couple of new ways to do it, and finally you have stuff like TAA which is implemented in the game engine and incredibly fast.

masterfox1464d ago

wow I might play it again and try to get the good ending, freaking hate it the one I got lol.

georeo1463d ago

How many Endings are possible?

masterfox1463d ago

I think only two endings in exodus.

NeoGamer2321463d ago

In reality this is just a cash grab. The gold star was set by Witcher 3 when it got a next gen upgrade for free. Unfortunately not every developer/publisher has followed that standard.

"New Features" and "all the DLC" translates to - Put as little effort in as possible and get suckers to buy it.

LucasRuinedChildhood1464d ago (Edited 1464d ago )

It would be nice if it actually is due soon. A lot of these promised free next gen upgrades (Doom Eternal, Ghostrunner, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077) are certainly taking their time considering how long ago they were announced.

I was expecting this to drop around August/September.

Father__Merrin1464d ago

I'm wondering the same they are taking too long. If the upgrades are anything good then I can imagine publishers shifting the idea in the office that it shouldn't be free

Profchaos1464d ago

Yeah I ended up picking up doom eternal on sale last November based on the next gen version promise.

Already own it on PC but loved the game so it was an easy sell for me

Still it's been an eternity since it's announcement and there's been no updates or timeliness

Same with cyberpunk they sold the PS4 and X1 version with the promise of a next gen version coming but didn't tell anyone it was releasing in November the following year

philm871463d ago

Doom Eternal shouldn't be too far off hopefully. They were concentrating on the expansions, but now they're out of the way they've said they're concentrating on the upgrades.

annoyedgamer1464d ago

I want to see the PC. Everything is centered on consoles now.

1463d ago
Mr Logic1463d ago

Same. First game Requiring an RTX capable GPU is going to be interesting. Plus it'll have DLSS 2.0 which will make me finally play it.

ginsunuva1463d ago

Good news: It already has all these features on PC since Day 1!

masterfox1463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

The PC cant handle the next gen console powa!! :D no seriously it cant since the majority of PC gamers are still on a 1060 gtx, saw one of those STEAM statistics and it was really surprising.

If the excruciating long load times can be shortened, then I am going to be a happy man.

DJStotty1463d ago

PS5 and Series will have shorter load times, even without any SSD optimisation.
