New Xbox 360 model may be Red Ring killer

Reports of the "Jasper" model of the Xbox 360 have been reported to have been in stores since as early as late September, and now a newer report gives us some better details on what to look for, particularly the output voltage on the power brick.

Maybe that was the plan all along. Take our money, give us a little taste and then nail us again for a product that's actually reliable. It'd be brilliant if we didn't know that financially it backfired so dramatically. According to MS's fiscal updates the 360 has lost their games division over 3 billion between the warranty and R&D costs. At the current rate of $400-500 million a year now that they're finally making money, it'll take them 6 years at this rate to even break even on the 360. When you figure in XBL memberships bring in about $650 million a year, don't hold your breath waiting for MS to give you a break there. Take away XBL subscription fees and suddenly MS games division still isn't making a dime.

I'm going to leave the PS3 in the living room where it is. I want a console in the bedroom so I can stream movies to it wirelessly. I hate tearing my entertainment center apart to move consoles, hence the additional console purchase.

It's nothing against any console, it's all about the cost to install the unit and get it running. No idea how people can disagree with that. :D

Obviously there's a problem with the console, but here's the thing. When are you fanboys going to realize that EVEN WITH a failure rate, the 360 is still outselling the PS3? That's pretty bad.(and NO MS doesn't count replacement consoles in their estimates. They took out separate money for that)

My family has two 360s. My father and brother use my launch 360 every few days for hours at a time. Not one problem after 3 years(although it's noticeably louder than my elite). I use my elite ALL of the time. No problems. Obviously I'm lucky to not have had any problems but I don't think it's 30%, at least not anymore. Out of all of my close friends that have a 360, only 2 have had problems. I'd say about 14 of my friends have a 360. Out of my other online friends, only 5 have had problems. I have 53 friends(all active on LIVE). That's not 30%.

Move on fanboy. Telling everyone to buy a PS3 instead of a 360 is "fanboyism at its greatest and saddest."

Considering it took them 3 years to get a functional unit out this is when they should have really launched the 360. I own all 3 consoles and have only had problems with one console to a frustrating level. That is the 360, if it were not for Best Buys warranty to replace them I would of stopped at console number 3. The first one was a faulty power brick I let it slide, second one lasted a month RROD, 3rd one kept scratching discs and freezing. The fourth is currently only being used in terms of exclusive titles. Not to mention the Xbox original had tons of problems with the disc drive.
With no Live the console is pretty much worthless IMO. My PS3 has froze on me with a couple of games which is frustrating but no other problems. The Wii... well that doesn't get used enough to have any problems. I can't respect a company for doing what they should of in the beginning make a solid console.

Same here, So far the other two consoles and an MMO have held me over until this time, and I'm sure others have probably done the same (Waiting it out before buying a 360) As the estimated failure rate numbers that were thrown about were really just unacceptable in the first place.

I just didn't want to have my 360 that I purchased with Live and various games. Scratching up said games, and then going RROD on me, have it shipped out only to get a different one back and find various things missing. As well as perhaps my discs beyond playable. Hopefully this will do the trick.

I don't trust Microsoft, but I do enjoy the games. I just can't stand the hardware, the issues, and how they've chosen to deal with them.

Oh, and I'm not a fanboy. I use a Microsoft operating system (on a custom-built PC and with linux dual-booted along side it, of course), I did have an Xbox 360 (well, 4 of them).

I've got a massive Gears of War 2 POP display adorning my room...it's about 5 and a half feet tall.

Call of Duty 2 is still one of my favorite games this gen (played it on 360 / XBL).

I've still got an original Xbox on a shelf right underneath my PS3 in my entertainment center. Yes I still play Halo 2 occasionally with my little brother. Co-op is fun.

I have a xbox-360 dated 18/07/2008, guess what, I was talking on this forum yesterday about how reliable my new Xbox-360 has been, then when I turn it on I get the E74 error lol, hey so long has I get a replacment I don't care, but the replacement is the one dated 18/07/2008 so do not assume you will get the jasper model. For the record getting my 360's fixed or replaced has not been a problem, so apart from the odd headache theres no real problem here for me.

I find it funny that everyone blamed MS for a bad design when the real problem was with the material that a company was suppling for the GPU. The material could not take the heat it was suppose to and broke down over time. Now that they found the real problem the 360 will probably out last the PS3.

About how the new chipset will cure RROD, but no proof. Sounds like another MS viral campaign is working. In an interview a few months ago, Peter Moore said they used viral campaign to launch the 360.

It was for the most part, but not 100%, these new jasper chipsets have 65nm GPU's to go along with the 65nm CPU's from the falcon models. Basically the GPU that keeps popping off the board from heat in theory shouldn't anymore since it's smaller and produces less heat.
