The Last Samurai...not one of the movies that should be in the same article as the other films.

I recommend the remake of Hara Kiri as well as the original.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The Sword Of Doom

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Machibuse (AKA Ambush or The Incident at Blood Pass). This is actually Mifune's 4th outing as the samurai with no name. No subs in the trailer but there are in Region A/1 DVDs

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Sekigahara, same as above the bluray has english subs.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Throne of Blood. It does deal with the supernatural in certain moments as it is a telling of MacBeth and the best version of that story you will witness.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Three Outlaw Samurai

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Goyokin

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Samurai Assassin

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And finally, The Hidden Fortress. The Kurosawa film that inspired George Lucas to make Star Wars. And I mean the original Hidden Fortress with Toshiro Mifune. No original quality trailers so here is a modern take on the original film:

Someone even did a Star Wars style trailer for it: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Excellent list.

Also, the article mentions 13 Assassins, but take note the Western release(s) of that movie is (sadly) a shorter cut than the Japanese director's cut.

morganfell1758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

Thanks. I saw 13 Assassins and then about 2 weeks after it premiered here my buddy in Tokyo dropped that bomb on me :P

Nice list, but yeah as I said in the article The Last Samurai is there pretty much only for people who need something very familiar to what they’re used to form Hollywood movies as an introduction or gateway to the proper films. So in that instance it has some value.

I noted Hidden Fortress as an honorable mention just because it’s not really that much of a *Samurai* movie, despite being a very influential movie.

Yi-Long1758d ago

Perhaps Shogun (mini-series) would have been a better recommendation as 'gateway' flick to the genre. The Zatoichi and Lone Wolf series bear mentioning as well of course.

Really wish the TV show Ryomaden would have gotten a release in the West, as I've heard good things about it. Been looking for it on BR or even DVD when I was in Hong Kong, Taiwan and even Japan, but haven't found it yet.

Blade of the Immortal is nice as well, although the manga (of course) is better.

Vagabond (manga) is also highly regarded, but only read the first book myself.

morganfell1758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

It is more of an overall representation of jidaigeki and less of the sub category of chanbara. However there are some moments in there that will relate to the game as well as the Mongol Invasions themselves. Regarding TLS and it’s necessity, they are about to get, what is for most, something wholly unfamiliar :) And a great many Japanese do not care for that film at all. In addition its not, as SP has patterned, samurai cinema.

One other note about chanbara. Most of the highly respected films in the genre have remarkably little combat compared to the entire run time.

@Yi

Great you brought those up. I absolutely considered listing those along with The Sleepy Eyes of Death and decided to forgo it because of trying to explain to people where to start ha ha. In fact the 3rd appearance of Yojimbo was in Jan of 1970 with Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo :P

Love Blade of the Immortal. Also Samurai Executioner is in print.

Edit: Shogun miniseries tie in perfect for Nioh players as well

morganfell1758d ago

Two others I recommend that I own. Castle of Owls. Also, the Sonny Chiba TV series I have called Shadow Warriors where he first played the leader of the Iga Ninja Clan, Hattori Hanzo, the forefthaer of the character he would later play in Kill Bill.

It was a great game.
All my Japanese friends loved it.
I remember I would visit my friend who owned a bar and we will talk about the game and sometimes other Japanese dude will join in. Pretty dope

-Foxtrot35d ago

That’s great and a little hilarious how when it was revealed western journalists tried to give off the impression that it came off racist with it being made by non Japanese developers.

CrimsonWing6935d ago

I hope western culture knocks this sh*t off. F*cking Parasites Eve took place in New York, does that make Square a bunch of racists?

-Foxtrot35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Reminds me of Resident Evil

RE4 - Leon killing infected Spanaids...in Spain

Fine

RE5 - Chris killing infected Africans...in Africa

WHAT THE ACTUAL F*** YOU RACIST PRICKS. HOW COULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

MDTunkown34d ago

-Foxtrot
RE5 case it’s not that long ago when foreigners were killing local Africans. Leopold 2, killed millions Africans. So that’s a touchy historical topic. We don’t have any story driven games where you playing as Nazi.

goken35d ago

Somehow the same western journalists said nothing of AC shadows, when some Japanese were so offended they discussed it with their prime minister in the diet (Japanese parliament).

-Foxtrot35d ago

I've never actually thought of this...

They literally got really snarky with Ghost of Tsushima since it's announcement yet with AC Shadows they said absolutely nothing.

Double standards. Was it because it was Ubisoft or what?

Michiel198934d ago

how the f can you say this after literally everyone complains about AC? So you wanna say you checked which outlets did it for ghost "supposedly" and cross referenced them to the AC reviews? very believable

Cacabunga34d ago

western journalism is all about splitting of communities.

Don’t bother with obscured his last 2 brain cells died when he realized ALL NEW XBOX “EXCLUSIVES “ ARE COMING TO PLAYSTATION
It’s so bad he wrote the answer to his IQ leve as a new account, instead of writing iq 6 yeah he wrote YQIA6🤣.
NOW BACK TO THE TOPIC
Everyone knows that Japan lost their relevancy as the source of video games decades ago so it’s no surprise to anyone with 2 brain cells that this would happen now I would like to see any Microsoft exclusive have the courage to say how many units halo sold in Japan or better jet the number of consoles sold in its totality 🤷🏿

senorfartcushion34d ago

?

It's a AAA videogame. Western journalists only like and care about these games. It's Yotei that's lroving controversial, for stupid reasons - but it's journalists who are trying to talk that game up.
