Is Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 really (much) better looking than GT Sport on PS4 ?

Sony unveiled the upcoming Gran Turismo 7 on PS5, with a short clip of gameplay. But, when we compare, is this brand new GT7 on PS5 really better looking than the current GT Sport on PS4 ?

it doesn’t look like a generational leap to me. But GT 7 definitely seems like a full game with GT style single player and gt sport style multiplayer. It’s almost like GT Sport was like the Prologue they released on the ps3, and then they fleshed it’s out to a complete MP game

Obscure_Observer1814d ago

"it doesn’t look like a generational leap to me."

Yeah, it´s far from impressive.

Dee_911814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

@ obscure
take a look at gt sport copper box on youtube and gt sport now.
this is just an early stage.
you can realistically expect about as big a jump as gtsport was to gt6 by the time gt7 releases. .

CaptainHenry9161814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Looks like another Sony exclusive that's going to get a great review score just like most Sony exclusives. Not surprised from hearing this from you though

S2Killinit1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Ahahaha Krib and Obscure. Tell me, are you 2 the same person, answering each other? Or do you both rush to PS articles as soon as its critical? Im sure Obscure was relieved to find Krib had commented first, otherwise they would have lost their opportunity to derail the conversation.

I fully expect both of you... gentlemen, to be MIA once the reviews come out?

DarXyde1814d ago

At least it's gameplay.

Kribwalker1814d ago

@S2kill
derail the conversation? The article is asking if gt7 looks like a big upgrade. I’m sorry if me not praising sony for offering 2 games that look like ps4 games just upgraded slightly (spider-man) as next gen exclusive titles, that don’t look that next gen........i answered the question, i don’t think it looks much better yet

Ricegum1814d ago

Wow. This comment section got flooded with Xbox fans so quick. You guys really want GT7 to be bad don't you.

OT. The game looks great, I think it's still a way off but I'm excited to see GT return to its roots again. No other racer offers a campaign as good as a Gran Turismo game.

CaptainHenry9161814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

@Ricegum

Just like that *certain group* wanted the last of us 2 review to be bad 😁

ProjectVulcan1814d ago

Probably because comparison footage is being made using GT Sport on a PS4 Pro, which is already running at 1800p, far above the base model.

PS4 Pro is still less than four years old hardware. We haven't had mainstream home consoles that had mid life refreshes to raise their performance like this before.

Inevitably that meant the gap would narrow to next gen machines.

If you only had GT Sport at 1080p on 2013 PS4 hardware then the comparison would be much more dramatic, 1080p to 4K with extra effects is obviously more impressive than 1800p to 2160p with a bit more polish.

S2Killinit1814d ago

@krib
Come now, lets not act like you havent been doing this for ages.

Kribwalker1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

@ricegum
“ You guys really want GT7 to be bad don't you. ”

not in any way, i feel after a generation of OK exclusive racers, that Ps fans would want a new GT game that at least matches the quality the Forza series has been doing all gen. I loved the old GT games on the ps2, but since the PS3 GT prologue and the half game they released, it has been on a steady decline

IRetrouk1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

What do you even mean by quality? You mean car numbers krib, because quality wise gt sport was better than forza 7 in both car models, trackside details like trees and lighting and gt6 before that was of a higher quality than any forza on the previous gen too, that's not even getting into handling, or players becoming real world drivers.. or sales..
Gt7 100% looked like a jump, you could see that in the lighting and car models, trackside detail also looks better as did the shadows and interior details, you should do yourself a favour and watch the 4k 60fps feed, game really does look nice🤷‍♂️
Also spidey looked great, think you need your eyes looked at to be honest.

yeahokwhatever1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

There have been no shortage of excellent racing games on PS4. I still havent played anything as good as DriveClub this gen, and I have a high-end PC with all of the Forzas, Need For Speeds, Asetto, Project Cars, Dirts, etc. I freaking love racing. GT:Sport is an Esports game. They tacked on some career events to hold the classic fans over. Polyphony has said that the models built for GT Sport were actually being made at PS5 level detail this entire time and then downgraded to work with the PS4. If you actually play a ton of Sport, and then watch the 4k trailer for GT7, 2 things are obvious. 1: its a work in progress, but its a REAL DEMO. and 2: its much, much, much better looking than GT:Sport.
All that said, DriveClub was perfect and my favorite racer in the past 8 years.

NeoGamer2321814d ago

I think there is a lot of differences.

The level of detail and type of detail in the environment is different. Check out the shadows and amount of things all around.

Also, when they are side by side inside the tunnel you can see that GT7 uses ray tracing for lighting to make it more realistic. (0:57 mark of the video)

Games1st1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Confirmed in interview to have nearly all next gen features.

Dragonscale1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Its far from impressive like your attempt at trolling. All it means is gt sport looks that good its hard to improve on it.

bouzebbal1813d ago

GT sports does look impressive.. What will make difference is the amount of details off track, remove the load screens quick is the most annoying thing with the series.. I think they reached a level of realism in the cars with GTS.

Keltech1813d ago

@Kribwalker " that Ps fans would want a new GT game that at least matches the quality the Forza series."

YIKES!!!, I cringed reading that. I'm surprised you wasn't embarrassed writing it. I don't think any GT fan would want cell shaded cars that look like they're hovering above the track.

I really hope its not just GTS with a 7 on the end. I want this game to be SP focused (like all previous mainline GT games) and have the MP side to round it out. I know their deal with FIA and whatnot but seriously... for a game to wear that number, it has to be worthy of that number like the previous entries were.

Atom6661814d ago

I think it will. They led off with talking about campaign for a reason, and I'm sure they've heard our GTS complaints.

Tech51814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

are the reflections ray-traced? what setting are they? mazda drives by and the driver does not show up in the reflections. https://youtu.be/rrHGSe6VvQ...

AmUnRa1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Polyphony said the campaign will be like the old GT games, did you see the event last thursday? He said it clear as day😉

BiofourceGun1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

@ tech
after re-watching this a couple times. even being directly behind the Mazda in GT7 your car is not in the reflections. https://youtu.be/rrHGSe6VvQ...
it just reflects the background. i take it GT7 is using standard planar reflections.
planar reflections can still yield some pretty good results. https://youtu.be/ZphX42ZdqH...

rainslacker1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

GT:S seems to be integrated into GT7. It's off to the side of the menu. although it's just the live feed icon. But, it has cup races, you can modify your car much more than they allow in Sport, and it why wouldn't they provide at least an A-Spec campaign since they're making it a numbered GT. The menu itself also seems to be much more like the past couple numbered games.

If anything, this will be where you go to play GT:S into next gen.

GT:S itself would have been fine if they had released it with a proper A-Spec campaign. GT has had MP for a while, but the focus on this GT was more about competitive gaming.

fr0sty1814d ago

Keep in mind objects can be omitted from ray tracing in order to save resources, it may be that they chose to only RT the background, or perhaps they aren't far enough along with optimization to have the cars included as well, we'll see when it releases.

Looks next gen to me. And im glad GT7 is back.
Every generation from PS1-PS3, i bought a GT. I only skipped sport because it didnt have what i love most about it - career mode.

Happy that it's back baby!

ABizzel11814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

That's because most of you don't know what to look for to show the graphical improvements because you've never had a PC to change graphic settings to understand the difference in quality.

The lighting thanks to Ray Tracing is a night and day difference.
The shadow quality (also partially thanks to RT) is a night and day difference.
Reflections are a night and day difference due to RT.
The environment is a much higher quality render with significantly more polygons and textures.

The only thing that may even be comparable are car models, because we know GT and all other racing games reuses car models to save time on development. But even then some of the cars are retextured and have Ray Tracing for the internal; components.

https://twitter.com/TigerCA...

The reality is this is what you guys get when you keep asking for 4K. A Native 4K resolution is a waste of the GPU power of these consoles, and if you're not watching this video on a 4K display then you're already taking away from the quality of GT 7.

Knushwood Butt1814d ago

The visuals in GT Sport are great.

Just how much bettet can a car look?

gigzamillion1814d ago

"not in any way, i feel after a generation of OK exclusive racers, that Ps fans would want a new GT game that at least matches the quality the Forza series has been doing all gen."

Your comment is insulting and just an attempt to start a fight as usual. GT Sport is better than "ok" you'd know that had you actually played it, we appreciate your concern for all us Ps fans but we don't want a game like Forza but thanks anyway. GT is the real driving simulator always has been and always will be.

badz1491814d ago

GTS already looks stunning. Sony even used it for their 8K/120fps HDR + real-time Ray tracing demo back in 2018 fgs! even Yamauchi-san said that the assets they used in GTS is next-gen ready.

the footage showed during the event looks quite good actually and they showcased the ray tracing feature and a lusher environment on the trial mountain compared to the last time we visited it in GT6.

the improvement will not just be in graphics. GT7 will definitely be 4K60fps, that much is certain and that alone already an improvement over GTS. RT will be added and 3D Audio through the tempest engine and there will be more cars and more circuit and of course the SP campaign that people like so much. It's just that I don't think they would want to release it too early and subsequently kill GTS when the later is still pretty much alive and kicking in the online department and not to forget that gamers can carry over their saves to the PS5 because it will be BC. so there will be a great racing game to play on the PS5 at launch in the form of GTS BC. who knows, they might release a PS5 patch for GTS to make it runs better on the PS5, right? that would be AWESOME!

Rynxie1813d ago

Probably because polyphony is using the same engine as gt sport. They are known for using the engine (resources) of previous hardware. Not until gt8 will we see a next generation Gran Turismo.

IRetrouk1813d ago (Edited 1813d ago )

Gt1, gt 3, gt 5 and gt sport have all had new engines built for each of their respective platforms(gt 5 featured older series models for some cars, that's models though not engine) this is the first next gen gt that has been built with the last gen engine, which was built with the future in mind(plenty of interviews you can find to confirm), that's ofcourse assuming they are using the sport engine(nothings been confirmed yet). Forza is the game that actually resuses its engines and models, it's only getting a new build now after using an updated 360 engine all gen. Gt 7 will be as next gen as any other racer that comes out.

Elit3Nick1813d ago

Your own idea of a generational leap won't happen anymore. It was different going from PS1 to PS2, and then PS2 to PS3, since new graphical techniques led to a significant jump in visual fidelity. Now with GT:S, there's already near-photorealistic graphics, so even ray-tracing won't lead to a significant visual improvement.

What we will likely see is an improvement in gameplay, namely more cars, more complex physics simulation, and other mechanics that will deepen the experience.

Don’t understand all the dislikes here friend, really nice to see someone actually being honest because what you’ve stated here is tue. They seemed to have slacked of a lot when it comes to visuals ever since the ps3 , this new game is finally a full game from the start but it’s clearly using the exact same engine. You can still see higher quality Lods popping into place as the car moves Through the level.Thats something I really thought the new ssd design should have almost completely eliminated could change though over time fingers crossed. It is Fairly obv in the sake of time they used the same engine just tweaked for ps5 here’s hoping they improve it further Not to say it loookd bad because it looks great

As it stand no it doesn't look all that different but it in early build form give it 2 or 4 years you gonna see the difference.

1814d ago Replies(2)
rainslacker1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

There are quite a few lighting effects, and overall, the car models do seem to be more detailed. But, GPU's have been able to render car shapes pretty well for a while now, including this gen, so I don't know how much further they can go, and the textures already are pretty good on driving games. That just leaves reflections, which is something that cars have when they're all polished up, and that was certainly an improvement shown in the GT7 trailer.

I'd be happy with a full PSVR mode though.:)

DrDeath1813d ago

Full psvr would be stellar

KilluaX31814d ago

At least GT7 is running at playable frame rates if the 60fps/120fps thing is true.

Ricegum1814d ago

I wonder how many times you've said "frame rate" or "fps" in the last week.

It must be a staggering amount.

rainslacker1814d ago

If I had a nickel for every time he said it, he'd be getting pelted with a lot of nickels because I'd throw them at him.

Rimeskeem1814d ago

You must hate watching movies or tv shows lol

KilluaX31811d ago

Those aren't interactive mediums. What a stupid comment.

Dragonscale1814d ago

120 fps is actually pointless fgs lol.

KilluaX31811d ago

No it's not. It's considerably smoother compared to 60fps.

I_am_Batman1814d ago

It looks good, but it's also obvious that they've used the PS4 build of GT Sport as a foundation for GT7. Draw distances and shadow LOD are potentially hard coded into the engine and those residuals are obviously very visable here. The raytraced reflections are a nice upgrade, but games striving for photorealism will have a hard time overcoming diminishing returns, especially when the last gen games already looked really good. It's possible that different times of day or different weather will show a greater visual gap between GT Sport and GT7.

I would imagine there is going to be more to GT7 than simply better looking graphics though. The 3D audio of the PS5 and haptic feedback on the controller might make these games a lot more immersive for people that aren't playing with a wheel and surround sound already.

crazyCoconuts1814d ago

Agreed. Non-open-world Driving games already look so beautiful as is, the differences might be subtle.
I feel like there's lots more room to grow when you take VR into account. Even on PC the VR versions don't look great. If Sony can find a way to get GT7 to look great on PSVR2 and work with my existing wheel, I'm all in.

Knushwood Butt1814d ago

Yep, G29 support and full game in PSVR please!

yeahokwhatever1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

I love it when people who lack any graphics programming xp say things they dont understand. Adorable.

I_am_Batman1814d ago

What do you think I don't understand about the things I've mentioned? These are very basic concepts, otherwise I wouldn't even mention them here. I'm not a professional 3D artist. I'm a software engineer who is very interested in game design. I try to educate myself on every aspect of game development and have at least dabbled in most fields associated with it.

I'm not too arrogant to admit when I made a mistake, quite the contrary. I welcome any corrections, because that gives me another opportunity to learn something new. So why don't you make your criticism a bit more concrete so we can actually have a constructive discussion about it instead of throwing around baseless accusations and assumptions?

Rimeskeem1814d ago

Your name is a good answer to all your comments.

rainslacker1814d ago (Edited 1814d ago )

Not sure why you would assume that draw distances and LOD's are hard coded into an engine. That defies all logic. LOD's in particular are programmed on the application level to be able to plug in a specific LOD based on the distance it is from the camera. Draw distance is just a clipping of where to stop the draw, and it can be set by a variable.

It's possible they used the GT:S engine....in fact its very likely. The engine itself is fine for what it does, and there is no reason to reinvent the wheel to make a new GT game. Just improve on what was there before....which hopefully is the AI, driving physics, and graphics. At least with the SSD, we hopefully won't have to wait while the track loads....a GT staple.:)

I_am_Batman1813d ago (Edited 1813d ago )

It just seems like the most likely explanation for what we're seeing in regards to the Shadow LOD pop in and draw distance for the tunnel lights to me. I've only looked at GT7 briefly so I might've missed some more tells that could answer those questions more definitively. I might take another look at it over the weekend, if I find a high bitrate video.

Yes, you could and should do these things using variables, but bad coding practices happen all the time especially when there was no intention to ever change the value due to it being a console exclusive game. We've seen similar things with Bloodborne for example, where the expected framerate was so deeply integrated into the source code, that any alteration to it would screw with the logic of the game.

It's of course possible that it was an oversight, and it is indeed a simple fix, but no matter what causes these issues, I expect them to be fixed before the game launches.

rainslacker1812d ago

It's more likely the rendering routine needs modified to adapt to the higher speeds of the PS I/O. Rendering routines will do things in a certain order, and different hardware, even if similar, may not operate as efficiently.

I can't see them hard coding the things into the engine though, and even if they were, they'd have variables set to them. LOD's in particular are going to vary between objects, so hard coding them into an engine makes no sense.

Melankolis1814d ago

"games striving for photorealism will have a hard time overcoming diminishing returns"
I agree. Games such as Uncharted 4 and TLOU Part 2 have already looked very good.

EazyC1813d ago

Yes -- people forget HOW good GT Sport looks, to be console-only and a class leader in the sim racing genre is quite incredible.

The final version will be a big jump. Thats not the problem. The big question is how much time to launch the game? Graphics arent the question... Its time. He LIKES perfection, small details!

yeah. after gtsport released, i learned not to question PD's graphical prowess lol. There wasnt a release window at the end and that kinda scare me

Apparently that Ferrari Super Fast lives up to its name.

cloganart19d ago

With Forza on PS soon, I hope Polyphony Digital finally wakes up and moves on from this GaaS stuff now that they have competition.

fsfsxii19d ago

This isnt even a GAAS title, are you serious? They’ve been dropping updates and adding content since GT5, does that make GT5 a gaas title?

OtterX18d ago

I don't think you understand what GAAS actually means.

cloganart18d ago

Their approach to GT7 has felt very much like Live Service than any previous GT.

Babadook717d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I've always considered GT7 GAAS. It's all free though if you earn your credits, and I'd say it's the very best racing game, so I have zero gripes about the content releases and community features.
