Team Xbox: The Last Remnant Review

Team Xbox: "You will do a lot of spectating in The Last Remnant, but it's just not the same as watching the cuts of a late-model Final Fantasy adventure. This makes the decision to run The Last Remnant off of Unreal 3, as opposed to Crystal (a tool designed to run an RPG in CGI quality, across the board), even more peculiar. You would think some lessons would have been learned from Mistwalker and the UE3-powered Lost Odyssey-maybe there's some other forces involved here that we don't know about. But the bottom line is that The Last Remnant won't quite deliver the graphical punch that JRPG fans are used to, despite some stellar art direction and character generation."

the game is actually good, 4 hours in and would still be playing it if not for work. as an JRPG ho myself this game is a solid 8.

the only thing i don't like about the game is the voice acting the usual crap.

sushipoop6016d ago

Next up: Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Tri-Ace just finished one of the biggest flops of the year (Infinite Undiscovery and they're already almost done with Star Ocean 4 lol. What does that tell you? They've been developing two flops at the same.

DevilVergilX6016d ago

Damn I wish theres some way for all jrpg or japaneses game that comes to america to have the option of having japanese dubbing with english sub... I mean it sometime kills the whole gaming experience...

kindi_boy6016d ago

I prefer reading lol
my imagination puts better voice over than what those companies do.
i think the issue is those companies don't get that people playing now are grown ups/grew up and Barny-like voice acting wont cut it anymore.

and yea no body can beat Japanese when it comes to voice acting.

sushipoop6016d ago

Funny how Valkyria Chronicles outscored every other JRPG released this generation.

bushfan6016d ago

too many flops..so what is going on?...they run out of ideas¿? maybe or maybe not, now the last hope is FF XIII, if they make a new flop then is over.. i mean too many NDS games, so they can't have enough time to make something shine and really badass

so few and better games over a lot and so-so games

InMyOpinion6016d ago (Edited 6016d ago )

JRPGs perhaps, but Western RPGs are dominating this gen.

From Gamerankings.com

Valkyria Chronicles PS3 85.7%

Mass Effect Xbox 360 91.1%

Fable II Xbox 360 88.9%

Fallout 3 Xbox 360 93.1%

Fallout 3 PS3 91.3%

Unreal Engine 3 wasn't such a wise decision for Square it seems...

Panthers6016d ago

Star Ocean looks a lot better, but still. I hope it does good and eventually comes to the PS3

Sony Rep6016d ago

Lol. Level-5 >> SE in terms of quality games.

No wonder SE told them to make DQIX for them.

While I agree that the combat in Star Ocean 5's combat is pretty fun, saying that its story is more enjoyable than its predecessors is highly debatable. Also, it's not just the technical issues the game suffers from.

Gaming4Life19811932d ago

Star Ocean 5 was garbage and I was a huge star ocean fan.

Docmortem1932d ago

Completely disagree the games I played from the list all deserve their scores (Star Ocean, Nier, Tales of Zesteria, Type-0). While there are certainly people that love these games, they have flaws in many categories, that justify those scores.
Star Ocean especially bored the hell out of me. Lame story and face roll battle system (I finished the game anyway). These games are really niche and when rated by a broader public, fall short. In my opinion even in their own genre.

solideagle1932d ago

I personally have not played any game below 80 and thought wow this should have been 80-90 game. The only game I thought should have been 90 was Shadow Hearts II: Covenant. I am pretty sure there will be some games but average score usually is pretty good indication.

do you recommend any JRPG which you think were good/amazing but it didn't score well? I just purchased Tokyo xanadu but it seems way too slow like trails game but trail at least has good story. I will give it a shot

rainslacker1932d ago

I think there were quite a few JRPG games that got hit with lower meta scores last gen when all these reviewers were on their anti-anime tropes kick. Not that they should get up there into the high 80s or 90s, but they weren't 60-70 games either.

That's mostly died off this gen, thankfully

WickedLester1932d ago

Ni No Kuni 2 is way better than it's metascore.

solideagle1932d ago

I think Ni No Kuni 2 combat is pretty generic but if you add all DLCs then its combat is pretty awesome. I purchased the complete edition so I can say DLC changes the combat completely

FinalAeonX1932d ago

Ni no Kuni 1 is way better than its metascore

Father__Merrin1932d ago

meta scores are rubbish best ignore them. many gems out there

solideagle1932d ago (Edited 1932d ago )

can you please name few?

Kocurstvo1931d ago (Edited 1931d ago )

Useless to argument troll, but e.g. Eat Lead is hilarious and extremely funny, yet mediocre on metastupids.... Lords of the Fallen, Strange brigade... I could name hundreds

It's a good game, but the story is only okay. The gameplay is where the game really shines, but the game itself does an atrocious job of explaining it's own systems. Basically, you need to read a "what I wish I knew before I started" somewhere online, and then the game becomes great.
