Final Fantasy 7 Remake Review - IGN

Final Fantasy 7 Remake breathes exciting and fun new life into a classic, even if some dull and convoluted filler comes with it.

kenpachi1845d ago

Got my copy this morning
90.66 install
Takes about 40 minutes to install

Nyxus1845d ago

Been playing since Saturday, and having a lot of fun with it. Game looks gorgeous and is quite addictive.

kenpachi1845d ago

Pity the trophies won't sync doubt the dlc codes will work until Friday

stupidusername1845d ago

The combat, dialogue and narration is top level! I didn’t expect this game to be this good at all. (15 hours in)

Nyxus1845d ago

@ kenpachi: The DLC codes for the summons do work already. The dynamic theme not yet.

Artemidorus1845d ago

Would you say there is alot to do?

Nyxus1845d ago

@ Artemidorus: Yeah, I've played for over 6 hours and I'm only in Chapter 3. Taking my time. There's side quests, music to collect, some mini games, and upgrading gear / levelling. But I never played the original so it's hard for me to judge how it compares to that game.

UltraNova1845d ago

Glad you guys are enjoying it. As someone who played FF7 like 5 times already I'll wait for the complete Edition, whenever that one comes out.

throne1845d ago

do enemies respawn for the sake of grinding?

Nyxus1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

@ throne: yes, enemies do respawn.

terrorofdeath1845d ago

@UltraNova

You're probably going to have to wait a year or two (or more) to get the other parts of FFVII Remake, you sure you want to do that?

UnSelf1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

I didn’t play the original and have been waiting on this remake since Advent children. I. Can. Not. Wait

dumahim1845d ago

@Nyxus

I tried an accessory DLC code from the Butterfingers thing, that didn't work either.

kreate1845d ago

No disrespect to Cloud. But square today sucks. That being said, is this remake really good? Or it's just a heavily bias opinion?

The days of good final fantasy days are over.

Nyxus1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

@ kreate: I don't know if it's biased, it's just my opinion. But I never played the original.

UltraNova1845d ago

terrorofdeath,

Like I said, I'm fine waiting for the complete Edition (it's going to take more than a year considering part one covers 20% of the full game). I'll "survive" playing new games...

dumahim1845d ago

Won't get my copy until Thursday. At least Friday is a holiday.

1845d ago
kryteris1845d ago

how are you playing it early?
Hard copy?

kenpachi1845d ago

Yep Gamestop in Ireland are still shipping online my was sent Friday arrived this morning

Magic_Spatula1844d ago

The game was released early in Australia and Europe. It's getting released in the US on it's release date but Square said if stores got shipments early then they can sell them right away.

blitz06231845d ago

IGN really gave XIII and XV higher scores lol

RaidenBlack1845d ago

Shouldn't the score be unanimous?

KilluaX31845d ago

@RaidenBlack Well it's not, and never has been.

solideagle1845d ago

some sites gave it 6 and 7s wow :O
https://www.metacritic.com/...

I was expecting 90% but it seems reviewers have problem with boring side/filler quests to make game feel longer.
Can someone please share their experience?

Nyxus1845d ago

They're just your typical side quests. Not really a problem for me. They're side quests for a reason. More about leveling than story. Though I've only done 6 of them so far.

Eamon1845d ago

There aren't that many side quests. But in terms of padding in the main story, I can kinda see what IGN is saying. But I think most of it so far is fine.

NeoGamer2321845d ago

It is a Japanese RPG franchise. That automatically condemns it to some lower review scores.

Unfortunately reviewers don't have to like the genre to review it. Now-a-days FPS, Zombie survival games, and JRPGs cannot seem to get 90-100 Metacritic averages. Personally I add 10 points to every review in these genres.

Still though there are some low reviews on this game for some reason. Guess I will have to read for the reasons.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod1845d ago

@Nyxus..total nonsense..many games have great side content these days....filler is filler and should be called out as such.

Movefasta19931845d ago

@Nyxus I do plan on buying the game, but saying they are side quests for a reason is nonsense, we live in a different time where many games since last gen had great side content , now I haven't experienced all these side quests, but saying they are just side quests is nonsense.

Babadook71845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

We all knew there would be low ball scores for this game. It also received 11 perfect 10s.

SyntheticForm1845d ago

I played the demo and didn't think much of it, while the original is still my favorite one. I found the demo bland to be honest.

I definitely understand the middling scores.

Youngindy211845d ago

Those were solid games that didn't rely solely on nostalgia.

Nyxus1845d ago

I never played the original and am really liking this remake so far. So no, it's doesn't rely solely on nostalgia.

rolando1231845d ago

IGN is not one person. How many times are people going to keep saying this 🤦🏽‍♂️

Eamon1845d ago

True, but it does kinda reflect badly on them.
After playing all three of them, I think one can objectively say that FF7R is the superior of the bunch.

But I think it's also related to the fact that IGN has once again stopped rate games in decimals.

343_Guilty_Spark1845d ago

It's not even as good as the original beyond visuals

JesusBuiltmyHotrod1845d ago

Different reviewers, different times, different standards, it's not a hard concept.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod1845d ago

@neogamer..what a load of BS, Souls games, Monster hunter, RE, Dq11 all reviewed very well, all japanese games, nearly every game gets some low scores, even Zelda did. Stop the victim complex.

1845d ago
averagejoe261845d ago

Yes, and an 87 vs 93 really isn't THAT big of a difference

darthv721845d ago

Legit question... I have never played the original (but I have it for PS1) and wondered if I should invest the time to play that before getting this or am I better off playing the remake instead?

rainslacker1845d ago

Either way. I'd say just do the remake first, because then you wont feel disappointment with wherever they split the story. The original starts getting really good after the midgar section. Hoping this one can provide a good start to the series they're doing with the remake.

Sirk7x1845d ago

That's the problem with IGN, they have like 50 different reviewers at any given time.

343_Guilty_Spark1845d ago

Maybe for the time they released they were considered groundbreaking...where FF7 Remake isn't?

You can barely interact with the environment for example.

-Foxtrot1845d ago

Didn't they change up their review format anyway

Not to mention lets be honest, a huge franchise like FF kind of brings in reviews blinded by hype, I bet if those reviewers could go back and change their scores they would.

With FFVII not learning from FF15 in the side quest department, become very apparent that they are basically stretching out the game as much as they can without adding anything then I think this is a fair score.

Rebel_Scum1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

Shame about the side quests being boring filler crap. Reminds of of the start of FFXV where you’re asked to find a cat that is lost.

Square really need more imagination in this department or just not bother with it all and deliver a more cohesive product. Less is more as they say.

neutralgamer19921845d ago

They could have just made one FF7 remake but realize how much money they can make so they split that original content into who knows how many releases

Rebel_Scum1845d ago

Nah, it had to be a multi release. Think of all the mini games it had. They can't just have simple PS1 era mechanics for those. It would make the overall product kinda phoned in. Not to mention all the locations which were pre-rendered back in the day. Making them all 3D is a lot more work.

FlyGuyHung1845d ago

According to the EasyAllies review one of the side missions in this game IS helping a little girl find her cat. Lmfao

Mr_Skyfish1844d ago

Why would someone down your comment? That makes no sense at all! I mean this comment brought a smile to my face!

NecrumOddBoy1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

IGN Spain gave it a 9.6
IGN Japan gave it a 8.0 as well

jznrpg1845d ago (Edited 1845d ago )

IGN Japan gave it low marks for being too hard on casual players , having long battles consecutively . That’s not concerning to me .

LMosche1845d ago

Sounds like that insane guy directing Kingdom Hearts had some influence on the game ;(
Hopefully someone else at Square kept that guy's influence in check to prevent this from becoming another insultingly stupid nonsense with wasted money on cutscenes and random people teleporting around with no explanation.

KilluaX31845d ago

What are you talking about?

1845d ago
1845d ago Replies(3)
Sirk7x1845d ago

Of course he had influence on the game, he designed all the characters in FF7 and has been working with Square since like, 1990.

LMosche1844d ago

Yeah he wasn't the only person working on the game and wasn't fully in charge.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit12312350d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

RavenWolfx49d ago

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Zeldafan6449d ago

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.

This Guy Rebuilt The Original Final Fantasy 7 In LittleBigPlanet 2, And It's Awesome

The effort here is impressive. Hope it doesn’t get taken down.

fr0sty260d ago

He should have done it in Dreams though, the limitations of having done it in LBP are obvious.

solideagle260d ago

ah Dreams had so much potential, I think they should have released it on PC. one can only dream about dreams sale and popularity on PC. PC has modding/creative crowd and I think it would have been a hit

gleepot260d ago

I love seeing projects like this. So much passion and time.
