@ Artemidorus: Yeah, I've played for over 6 hours and I'm only in Chapter 3. Taking my time. There's side quests, music to collect, some mini games, and upgrading gear / levelling. But I never played the original so it's hard for me to judge how it compares to that game.

The game was released early in Australia and Europe. It's getting released in the US on it's release date but Square said if stores got shipments early then they can sell them right away.

I was expecting 90% but it seems reviewers have problem with boring side/filler quests to make game feel longer.
Can someone please share their experience?

They're just your typical side quests. Not really a problem for me. They're side quests for a reason. More about leveling than story. Though I've only done 6 of them so far.

There aren't that many side quests. But in terms of padding in the main story, I can kinda see what IGN is saying. But I think most of it so far is fine.

It is a Japanese RPG franchise. That automatically condemns it to some lower review scores.

Unfortunately reviewers don't have to like the genre to review it. Now-a-days FPS, Zombie survival games, and JRPGs cannot seem to get 90-100 Metacritic averages. Personally I add 10 points to every review in these genres.

Still though there are some low reviews on this game for some reason. Guess I will have to read for the reasons.

I played the demo and didn't think much of it, while the original is still my favorite one. I found the demo bland to be honest.

I definitely understand the middling scores.

After playing all three of them, I think one can objectively say that FF7R is the superior of the bunch.

But I think it's also related to the fact that IGN has once again stopped rate games in decimals.

Legit question... I have never played the original (but I have it for PS1) and wondered if I should invest the time to play that before getting this or am I better off playing the remake instead?

Either way. I'd say just do the remake first, because then you wont feel disappointment with wherever they split the story. The original starts getting really good after the midgar section. Hoping this one can provide a good start to the series they're doing with the remake.

Not to mention lets be honest, a huge franchise like FF kind of brings in reviews blinded by hype, I bet if those reviewers could go back and change their scores they would.

With FFVII not learning from FF15 in the side quest department, become very apparent that they are basically stretching out the game as much as they can without adding anything then I think this is a fair score.

Shame about the side quests being boring filler crap. Reminds of of the start of FFXV where you’re asked to find a cat that is lost.

Square really need more imagination in this department or just not bother with it all and deliver a more cohesive product. Less is more as they say.

Nah, it had to be a multi release. Think of all the mini games it had. They can't just have simple PS1 era mechanics for those. It would make the overall product kinda phoned in. Not to mention all the locations which were pre-rendered back in the day. Making them all 3D is a lot more work.

Sounds like that insane guy directing Kingdom Hearts had some influence on the game ;(
Hopefully someone else at Square kept that guy's influence in check to prevent this from becoming another insultingly stupid nonsense with wasted money on cutscenes and random people teleporting around with no explanation.

When you're right you're right. I don't doubt one second that many of these sites and influencers and such jizz hard over the idea of big big profile games like this being Xbox exclusive. we've already seen this during the360 and PS3 era only it wasn't so big because just about all games had a PS3 port whether it was timed or slightly inferior.

Oh God, a lot of talk about an divisive ending. Thats not good. As for the boring quests, I can see that, given XV had the worst side quests I've experienced in recent memory. SE really needs to step it um in this department. Get some notes from witcher 3.

Hell, there are games built around ‘boring side quests’ I’m looking at almost every single jrpg out there. Isn’t animal crossing nothing but boring side quests?

I don't understand why the game has the awful side quests. They were absolutely dreadful in FFXV (other than the hunt quests) and it seems they didn't learn from that here. I really don't like it when games are stretched out just to make it longer. I wish they would just make it a tense memorable time regardless of how many hours with great pacing rather than something being overly long just to give people their money's worth.

A bit off topic, but alot of people were complaining that RE3 was too short (I beat it in 7 hours) and that there's no content (The higher difficulties definitely increase replay value and changes alot of things up from normal mode) yet it seems to be the opposite effect here where they made it longer than it should be.

I know this is only one person though and every review will be different. My biggest problem with this review is that the game seems to be stretched out longer than it should be with filler pointless stuff that kills the pacing. I hate that in games because they want players to feel like they should get value out of their $60 rather than just focus on a great game regardless of how long it takes to beat.

The original had side quests. It just wasnt all tracked for you in a log, and wasnt relative fetch or go kill something quests like we are accustomed to today. For most, you may have had some obscure NPC from 20 hours before mention something about this thing they heard that was described in a vague hearsay sort of way, and you'd either happen across it later forgetting about the NPC, forget about it completely, or use a game guide/walkthrough to find and complete it.

Not even close to half of the main game lol. Covers up to the end of Midgar section. In the first disc of FF7 alone, after that, you still have to progress through Kalm, the Chocobo Farm, the Mythril Mine, Junon, the Cargo Ship, Costa Del Sol, Mount Corel, the Gold Saucer, Corel Prison, Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon, Nibelheim, Rocket Town, Gold Saucer again, Temple of the Ancients, Bone Village and the Forgotten Capital. That's the end of the first disc (of 3) from the original. This is going to be a very long remake series lol.

To be fair, the last disc was mostly just the part after jehovah. A little bit of main quest, and the point where you could just go around to finish up side stuff. There was a lot of duplicate data on disc 2 and 3, and the cut scenes took up most of the space.

But yeah, there is tons of game play after Midgar. Midgar is actually a fairly small part of the original game, but it does make a logical cut to the story...although the Aerith thing is probably a better split point.

Some reviewers will praise one game for something and then rip another for the same exact thing . So yeah , it’s nice to have scores for the really bad games but for the good to great games your taste comes in .

I'm about 12 hours in and on chapter 8 (I think). The main story is fantastic, the gameplay is fantastic, the soundtrack is fantastic and the visuals are fantastic. What isn't so fantastic is the side quests, they're pretty bland and boring.

I never take reviews from critics seriously unless I know that the one who did a review have similar tastes with me, so you get by that that for me the opinion of players is what matters most, especially when we are talking for a remake of an old classic game like FFVII that have millions of fans all over the world, that's from where I wanna read reviews, from all those fans who like me waited for this remake to come for over 10 years, so I w8 to see what old school FFVII fans have to say, are they satisfied with the work SE did or disappointed? if there is someone who played the game back in the PS1 era I would like to hear his opinion.
