This is really a game for fanboys. If you're a FF7 fanboy, you'll like it no matter what.
If you're not into padded gameplay, you'll be bored to tears in between actual great moments.

Really? I'm 20 hours in, I've never played FF7 and I know next to nothing about the story except the certain death of someone. I LOVE it. The great moments are happening all the time and the characters and narrative is very well done. I've never felt that any of it was padding, and the combat gameplay is the best it's been in any FF game I've played.
The side quests are not all that but those are only a tiny part of the game.

Not salt. Let's be honest here: if a game is being hyped to hell, especially if it has major nostalgia value, the first round reviews are almost entirely absolutely worthless.

Just look at Breath of the Wild. It went from being apparently one of the greatest games to grace humanity at launch to only being pretty good a few months down the road. When a game has obvious glaring flaws that are initially being ignored, they will eventually come to light in a big way. Very few games get stellar reviews on launch and hold onto that level of positive reception for more than a short while before the realistic takes start hitting.

That doesn’t make any sense. It is surprising because GS has been harsher in review scores in the past. That doesn’t mean it is unheard of. How in the world it is suddenly untrustworthy.....no idea.

A 10 is surprising but I got this game early and I can guarantee that this is a game definitely in the 9 region. Definitely the best main Final Fantasy game since the PS2 days.

You can really tell that Square have learnt a lot from the struggles of FF13, FFvs13 and FF15. I can see this battle system becoming the new standard for future FF titles.

Of course this game has its share of issues but thankfully they're not to do with core gameplay and combat. Its side quests so far (just about to face the Air Buster boss) have been fetch-quests or monster fighting but they do add to the narrative of the region they take place in.

IGN has complained about padding and I have experienced some which I thought unnecessary. Definitely the build up to the Air Buster boss felt needlessly long. I didn't mind the Lamps section as, again, they also serve to explain how life on the ground functions with a lot of darkness from the massive plate above. But the section after where you grind through narrow paths and then choose ways to preemptively de-buff the Air Buster boss just felt long and unnecessary. It also felt a bit too self-aware in a weird uncanny way.

But either way, I'm really enjoying it so far. It's clear that the developers put in their heart and soul, knowing that the last 2 generations of Final Fantasy titles were a complete mess. It feels like they Square is finally emerging out of their self-inflicted quagmire after so many years.

Yes they are. But they go out of their way to boost the scores. This game is not a 10. You cant expect me to believe this game is better than god of war which they gave a 9. No remake or remaster should be given a score 2 points higher than the original work. The original was given an 8. Very telling.

8 score- Good
7 score-Decent
6 and lower score- Terrible

To score a 9-10, the game needs to deliver a stellar experience. It is rare to be in that range so careful consideration needs to be put place to make sure the game deserves it. This is why some games don't breach that 9 and end up on an 8.
FF7 has a lot of 9 and 8, which makes the game decisive amongst reviewers.

As others have said. Gamespot is a tough site to hand out a 10. This is very impressive. IGN is only tough cause they really don't like Playstation exclusives. For me this game is the must buy of the year.

I am glad they give put a demo and I was instantly convinced to pick it up day one. I am a fan of FF7. I wouldn't miss an historic moment like this.
